She has dedicated her professional career to using psychological research to help people. She is a board-certified Clinical Psychologist and sees patients in her private practice, consults with healthcare tech start-ups, and delivers trainings and workshops on communication/motivation and health and wellbeing at work and in life. She is the sole author of The Motivational Interviewing Path to Personal Change: The Essential Workbook for Creating the Life You Want from New Harbinger Publications.

Russha has a BA in psychology and a master’s degree in Criminal Justice Administration. She joined the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers in San Diego in 2009. MI & Brain Injury

     

    Prior to joining the MINDSOURCE Brain Injury Network, she spent her 20 year career working in juvenile and criminal justice. She is interested in exploring how Motivational Interviewing can be adapted for use with people who have had an injury to the brain.

    Ep 76 – MI For Burnout & Compassion Fatigue

    Glenn and Sebastian were joined by Debra Collins, MA, LMFT to discuss MI as a way to reduce burnout and compassion fatigue. Debra has extensive experience in clinical practice, supervision and program management. She has been a program manager/clinical director in community-based clinics and has provided direct service, behavioral health consultation, program development, training, and supervision/coaching for a wide variety of social service, addiction and criminal justice settings.

    Throughout her career Debra has organized and participated in Community Response Teams when communities have been faced with natural disasters, violent crimes, or other catastrophic events. She is an active member of Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers (MINT) serving on the Reinstatement Committee and has presented at conferences, grand rounds, and panel discussions. 

     

    She is currently exploring how the Spirit of MI can support providers in reducing their risk of burnout and compassion fatigue and how the practice of MI might also be useful in helping providers explore their own ambivalence in utilizing self-care strategies.

    Episode 75: MI and Spirituality

    Glenn and Sebastian welcomed Sky Kershner to the podcast to discuss MI and Spirituality. MI & SpiritualitySky is an Assistant Professor in Psychiatry at WVU School of Medicine.

    Sky has a Doctor of Ministry degree as well as a Masters in Clinical Social Work. He is the retired Director of KPCC Counseling in Charleston, WV. Sky is a Member of MINT, the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers (one of two in WV), and is a MINT Certified Trainer. Sky has trained over 8000 professionals in MI across WV, the US, and abroad.

     

    Sky has received several awards for his professional work, including the WV Civil Rights Award and WV Counselor of the Year. Sky’s biggest “15 minutes of fame” moment is that he once appeared as a guest therapist on the Discovery Studios show “Hoarders.”  He is also a contributing author for the book “ACT Therapy for Pastoral Counselors,” edited by Steven Hayes. 

     

    Sky is the Pastor at the Unity Church in Charleston and teaches psychodynamics (fear of feelings) to psychiatric residents at WVU School of Medicine, Charleston Division. Sky is an Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART) trained practitioner, and is especially interested in the way this approach can help First Responders successfully process difficult images and memories, sometimes in just one session. Sky’s presentation topics include Optimism and Resilience, Spirituality and Recovery, Trauma Informed Parenting, Trauma Informed Care, Cultural Sensitivity, and Professional Boundaries for Clergy, and Transitions.

     

    Sky grew up in Eastern Pennsylvania, trained, practiced, and taught in New York City before making West Virginia his home over thirty years ago. Sky lives in Charleston with his wife, two kids in college, and a very little dog.

    MI and Servant Leadership

    Glenn and Sebastian welcomed Jemima Neddy Organ to the podcast to discuss MI and servant leadership. Jemima is a community educator having worked as an instructor and training consultant in Kenya and the Middle East. In Kenya, Jemima was actively involved in advocacy and education of mental health issues in the community. She initiated the writing of the psychological bill to acknowledge counseling as a profession in Kenya. Jemima also initiated a behavior change program for youth (in a faith-based organization). The program is now in six countries in Africa due to her active training and mentoring of the leaders.

    Jemima has a Ph.D. from the Organization, Information, & Learning Sciences (OILS) program at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque USA with a focus on Instructional Design (ID), Adult Education & Professional Development (AE&PD), and Motivational Interviewing in leadership (MI-Lead). Her dissertation was on “Motivational Interviewing: A Tool for Servant Leadership.” She was trained, coached, and is being mentored by Dr. William Miller, the father of MI. Jemima holds a master’s degree in Counseling Psychology from Daystar University in Nairobi, Kenya, and a bachelor’s degree in Psychology and Counseling from the University of Nairobi, Kenya. Jemima has over 27 years’ of experience in the mental health profession and is also a licensed professional counselor-candidate (LPCC) in Colorado. Jemima is an active member of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers (MINT) and she integrates her counseling skills with adult education and professional development. Her visionary personality has enabled her to initiate MI as a tool for servant leaders. Jemima gives presentations, trains, teaches, and coaches leaders on how to incorporate Motivational Interviewing in their leadership style.

Kress Non Suicidal Self Injuryis a distinguished professor and the director of the clinical mental health and addictions counseling programs at Youngstown State University. She has been the recipient of over 50 awards, most of which for her advocacy, leadership, scholarship, community service, and mentorship initiatives.  She has published over 130 articles and book chapters, and she has co-authored 5 books on clinical mental health counseling with youth and adults. She is a past president of Chi Sigma Iota International, the Association for Humanistic Counseling, the Ohio Counseling Association, and the North Central Association for Counselor Education and Supervision; she is a past ACA Midwest Region Chair; and she is a current member of the American Counseling Association’s governing council.  

    Rachel O’Neill, Ph.D, MBA  is a licensed clinical mental health counselor who has over 20 years of experience in the mental health profession.Non Suicidal Self Injury She has over 15 years experience in higher education, serving on the faculty for several graduate-level clinical mental health counseling programs. As a practicing therapist, Dr. O’Neill has worked in a variety of clinical settings, including community-based mental health and addictions treatment, psychiatric hospitals, college counseling settings, and inpatient facilities. She has served in multiple leadership positions, including vice president of clinical services at a global telehealth company, director of a primary medical care and behavioral health organization, and executive director of a state counseling association. Dr. O’Neill’s academic work has been featured in peer-reviewed publications such as The Journal of Mental Health Counseling, The Clinical Supervisor, The Journal of LGBT & Youth, and the Journal of Creativity and Mental Health. She is an expert contributor to national publications and media, including NBC News, HBO, Teen Vogue, Cosmopolitan, Wired, Refinery 29, Cheddar News, Time magazine, and Allure. She currently works as a mental health expert in the technology industry.

    Glenn and Sebastian welcomed Dr. Kasey Claborn to the podcast to discuss her work on MI and harm reduction. MI and Harm ReductionDr. Claborn is a licensed clinical psychologist and assistant professor of Social Work and Psychiatry at The University of Texas at Austin. She is the Steve Hicks Fellow of Addiction and Recovery Services and Director for the Addictions Research Institute. Dr. Claborn is the Principal Investigator for several projects funded by the National Institutes of Health, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, and the Health Resources and Services Administration. To date, she has received over $14.3 million dollars in external funding for her research. Dr. Claborn’s research focuses on improving the addiction system of care through community based participatory research methods and system science. She has expertise in designing and building digital technologies to improve care coordination and community overdose prevention efforts. In 2021, Dr. Claborn received an international award from Google for her work in building innovative technologies for social impact. Dr. Claborn’s current work seeks to use innovative methods to combine traditional and non-traditional overdose surveillance methods to inform data-driven community response.
