    BIO

I'm 71 years old & have been dieting since the age of 9! Yes, 9 years old. It's hard to believe, but it's true.

My mum had taken me to our family GP with concerns about my development as I was somewhat more significant than my peer group. If more thought had been given, then both mum & the GP would perhaps have realised I was at the start of puberty...earlier than most, but accurate. My early puberty resulted in decades of see-saw dieting, following in the footsteps of my mum, who was a serial dieter...I hadn't known anything other than Mum on a diet. Like so many, I had a hundred & one reasons to diet & can probably tell you my weight at different stages of my life. However, my dad dying of Alzheimer's in 2012 was a massive factor in my decision not to be in the same situation in my older years...at this stage, I was almost 60! It was time to change all aspects of my life, including sleep, nutrition, movement & mindset. A lower-carb way of life was part of those changes & today, I feel amazing. But a diagnosis of cancer last year made me realise if I hadn't worked so hard, my recovery post hysterectomy & subsequent treatment may have had an entirely different outcome.

Episode 247-Christine Field A transformation of mind body and soul losing nearly 200 pounds living an intermittent fasting lifestyle

    Bio By Christine Field

    Rhode Island USA

I have been intermittent fasting for just under seven years, in addition to trying countless other methods of weight loss. Not all those years were successful because I was doing it wrong and cheating the system. Well, cheating myself is more like it.

Initially, I did it wrong. Unclean. Uneducated about how to properly fast, etc., the same things you hear your guests say. I have been overweight my entire life. As a child, I was always the biggest one. I believe that I suffer from insulin issues that go undetected through typical medicine. I have strong reactions to sugar to this day. It’s awful. And I still hope to get it out of my life entirely someday.

My highest weight was 358 pounds. My current weight is 178. I am 5’8”. I went from a size 26 Womens to a size 6. It’s genuinely UNREAL to live in this body.

A couple years ago, I bought Gin’s book and started listening to her podcasts. That led me to your podcast. Although I love you both, I relate more to your life story in some ways.

I clean fast every day. I have been doing this for about 3 years now. I give myself a 4-6 hour window. I now incorporate two days of shorter fasts because I was getting too thin for my frame.  My tastes have changed. My life has changed.

Fasting reconnected me with life again. Taking the food away and all the accompanying noise put me in a place of openness and readiness to live my best life. I glow. I wake up every day ready to tackle life. I started noticing that the later I ate, the less refreshed I woke up, even if I had fasted.

You often speak about how your weight affects your parenting. I resonate with that deeply because I have three sporty children. I coach basketball. I run a football league. I want to be agile and fit. I want to be a great example of health and fitness to them and other children as well. I am that now.

Since our last talk, I break my fast most days with fermented food. I crave it now if I don’t have it. STRANGE! I follow that up with a protein, then vegetables, then carbs.

I am imperfect. I accept that much now. There is no perfect plan. You live and do your best and that’s what I do. I do not kill myself working out anymore. This is also new. I set a step goal for myself and enjoy walks whenever I can. I also do a strength video every other day. I fit it in wherever I can.

Another new tip- I’ve stopped thinking so much about what I don’t feel like doing. I just do it. The thinking screws me all up!!

Repeat Episode Series -158 Leslie Taylor

In this second repeat episode, we revisit with Leslie Taylor.

Thank you for your patience as i take a break to deal with a family bereavement of a loved one.

We will be back next week with our regular lineup of guests.

    Show notes from Episode 158

Leslie Taylor is a stay-at-home mom and grandma and has worked as a medical website content developer. She enjoys taking complicated medical information and presenting it in a creative and easy-to-understand manner for the general public. She is currently writing a book on fasting called Fast Well Feast Well and will be releasing the content of the book in a free weekly newsletter called FastWell.

Leslie was a healthy weight until her 30s when a stressful cross-country move caused her to suddenly gain 25 lbs (11kg). This is when her dieting history began. She tried Weight Watchers and other calorie-restrictive diets. Each time she lost some weight initially but then regained back even more. She tried keto in 2018 but found it too restrictive, losing only 10 lbs. and then plateauing. Then her dad passed away in January of 2022 from heart complications from having type 2 diabetes for 30 years. She got on the scale and found she weighed 180 lbs. (81 kg), which was 50 lbs. (23 kg) above her comfort weight. Her blood sugar numbers were pre-diabetic. She knew something had to change. She had heard about fasting from her sister. Also, her dad had reversed his diabetes through fasting in 2018 but this was too late since his heart damage was irreversible. She began doing OMAD in January of 2022 and faithfully did OMAD every day for 6 months but lost no weight or inches. Then on August 1st of 2022 she started ADF. She is now down 34 lbs., her blood sugar numbers are healthy again, her fasting insulin serum number is A+, and she has numerous NSVs.

Graeme is now available for a private one-on-one coaching and mentoring session. He can help you with those burning questions, including how to get started or overcome issues, no matter what phase you are in on your intermittent fasting journey. Get accountable and come and have a chat with Graeme, who is vastly experienced in all areas of intermittent fasting and the mindset it takes.

Repeat Episode 212 - Erika Barnhart losing 90 pounds in 10 months living an Intermittent fasting lifestyle.

As I take a break this week to celebrate my late father-in-law's life, we have a repeat episode with Erika Barnhart, who was on the podcast back in episode 212. At that point, Erika had lost a staggering 90 pounds -44 Kg in just ten months. It is an episode worthy of a relisten. We will be back next week with our regular schedule of guests.

    Show Notes from episode 212

Erika Barnhart is a 43-year-old salon consultant who resides in Pennsylvania with her husband and three dogs. She had been struggling with weight issues since childhood and was overweight throughout most of her life. Over many years, she has tried numerous diets since the age of 12, but her success was only temporary. Erika has always been fond of eating various foods, but she also enjoys eating in large quantities and feeling full. At the age of 13, she was diagnosed with high cholesterol and triglycerides but was never prescribed any medication. Then in early 2023, she realized that she was procrastinating on scheduling her annual physical because she knew that the doctor would become more persistent about beginning a series of statin medication due to her high cholesterol. She also suffered from sleep apnea, used a CPAP machine, and had been experiencing plantar fasciitis in her right foot, causing her to limp. She felt unnaturally old, defeated, and unhealthy for her age. She was ready to make a change. She began looking for a sustainable and cost-effective plan to become healthier. As well as not wanting to take any medications unless necessary.

Erika’s work involves a hybrid environment, including working from home, local, and overnight travel. She attends many business luncheons and events, so finding something to fit into her ever-changing routine is essential.

In March 2023, Erika finally discovered the freedom she had been seeking through fasting, and within about ten months, she lost 87 pounds (39.5kg). Erika achieved this by practising various fasts and focusing on nourishing foods. She appreciates the flexibility of fasting and incorporates it into her routine frequently. She has tried several fasts, such as Intermittent Fasting, Alternate Day Fasting (ADF), and Modified Alternate. Day Fasting (MADF), and One Meal a Day (OMAD). Also, she occasionally includes 48-60-hour fasts. Fasting has helped Erika gain more clarity, perspective, and patience, and the best part is that fasting doesn't cost anything! The flexibility has also made it easy to work into her ever-changing schedule. She's also excited to incorporate some yoga and weight training as soon as she begins working towards achieving her goal body. She’s also looking forward to hiking with her dogs once the weather improves in the spring.

Episode 246 Page Edwards -160 pounds -72.5 Kg lost living an Intermittent fasting lifestyle living his best life.

Born in the American Midwest (Michigan), Page did not grow up in a hotbed of nutritional enlightenment. Meat and potatoes were the rule, and processed and fast food abounded. Vegetables were sparse and generally boiled to an unidentifiable grey mush. As a kid, one of Page’s favourite snacks was a peanut butter and butter sandwich on Wonder Bread, which was washed down with so much Coke that his spit would turn black. Thanks to a genetic predisposition to gain weight quickly and a turbulent home life, it’s little wonder that Page was always the Fat Kid. As the Fat Kid, Page was relentlessly teased and bullied. Prone to emotional eating, Page grew fatter. He would periodically try the fad diet of the day, frequently losing weight, sometimes a lot of weight, but it always came back. School years passed, and Page started a career, married, and had kids. All the while, the years and the pounds added up. Eventually, Page reached his 50s, and the bill for a lifetime of poor health choices started to come due. Page was diagnosed as a wildly out-of-control type II diabetic, put on a host of medications, and commanded to lose weight. Obeying the conventional medical wisdom of the time, Page tried to lose weight via calorie restriction and exercise. Page became a gym rat, pushing himself to ever more extreme workouts. Amazingly, Page was able to lose over 100 pounds and reverse his type II diabetes. But it was too hard, being hungry and feeling deprived all the time. It just wasn’t maintainable. Page suffered a severe leg injury while attempting his first marathon. Unable to work out, Page regained almost all the weight he’d worked so hard to lose. Eventually, Page’s leg healed. But the prospect of living the rest of his life in a constant state of starvation was too much to bear. There had to be a better way. That was when Page discovered time-restricted eating. Episode 245 Mike Saunders -The first seven months losing a staggering 65 pounds 30 Kg living an intermittent fasting lifestyle.

    Howdy.
I'm Mike (Michael) Saunders. So, I suppose you need to know me and about me. I live just north of the capital of Alabama, which is Montgomery. I want to say I'm retired, but my friends keep asking me to help them with their businesses. (Quality control) I'm 72 and am currently recovering from Knee Replacement surgery.

When I went to the surgeon in December 2023, he, of course, told me that my BMI was too high.I clocked in at 365, then. I'm 6'1".  I got serious in February about losing weight so I could have the surgery. My goal for surgery was 331.  I have a friend in Mississippi who has lost 145 doing IF, so I asked her all about it and then began to research it. I dove in, and by May, I was at 310.
I mostly did a 4:3 for the last two months of that. I would mix it up with OMAD and TMAD.  For years since turning 40, I have yo-yo dieted with South Beach, Atkins and every other craze.
IF has been the only thing that is easy for me to do.  I reached my second goal of 300 a few weeks ago.  Now, on to my third goal of 200. Then, to do IF for life.

Episode 244 Bahar Eken -The first six months of an Intermittent Fasting Journey . Losing 17kg -35 Pounds finding new found freedoms

Hi! I'm Bahar (B for short); I am 29 years old, a wife and mum to a 2-year-old and live in the UK. I work a full-time corporate job in London. Being Turkish, food is very important in our culture. I love cooking and experimenting with different recipes. I started fasting in March 2024 and have lost 17kg with intermittent fasting (nearly six months). I have always been conscious of my weight and put on weight over COVID-19 and during my pregnancy with my son. Following the birth of my son, I got up to my highest weight. I tried dieting and exercising, but this lasted for 2 months max. It was not sustainable. My brother mentioned intermittent fasting to me when my son was nearly 1. I didn't start fasting until almost a year later. I have enjoyed fasting and have started vlogging my journey on Instagram (@fastwithB) for accountability and to inspire others to start fasting, which I have been able to do as several family members have begun fasting. I have not yet reached my goal weight, but I hope to reach around 63kg by the end of the year.

Episode 243 Audrey Scott -Four Years of living an intermittent fasting lifestyle and adapting to maintaining weight loss.

    By Audrey Scott

I have been Fasting since June 2020, aged 51, 4 months into the Pandemic. My weight had crept up again despite exercising 4 hours every morning to pass the time and try and keep the weight gain to a minimum. I weighed 230lbs at that point. I read Delay Don’t Deny by Gin Stephens. I can’t remember how I found her on the internet, but I bought her book on Amazon, and it resonated with me so deeply that I finally felt hopeful that I may have discovered a lifestyle that could work for me. With my Nursing background, I understood the concept of Insulin Resistance and suspected that I suffered from this as I’d dieted for over 20 years on and off.

I was slim as a child and always adored food, and I can remember feeling hungry a lot as a girl and not enjoying that sensation My weight gain started when I left home to train as a nurse, with shift patterns and feeling like I had no control over when I would next get to eat on shifts, I began the habit of overeating so I wouldn’t experience hunger. I also discovered fast food and Alcohol and enjoyed the student lifestyle to the fullest!! I knew I was gaining weight but didn’t weigh myself regularly as I didn’t want to know.

This continued for years, I lost weight on a low fat diet after I had my first child only to regain again after I had my second daughter. I began to try to seriously address my weight gain in 2003 when I moved to the USA with my husband and family; at that point, I weighed 266 lbs, my highest recorded weight, and needed to lose some. I lost 40 lbs. That was the start of years of YoYo dieting before I found IF in 2020

I started on an 18/6 protocol, clean fasting from Day 1. I lost 2 lbs of water weight in the first week and nothing for three months! I persevered as I genuinely thought that something would be happening inside of me, and my clothes were getting loose. I had a woosh of a 2 lb loss in October and then lost weight steadily from that point on, about 1 lb per week.  In the December of that year, I started doing a Meatless Monday for the autophagy benefits, and I swiftly moved onto a Hybrid ADF Approach on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays with subsequent Up days and a 4/6 hour window on a Sunday, which means I can be socialable on the weekends with my family.

I have been maintaining my weight around the 170 lb mark for about 18 months, happily fasting with zero plans EVER to stop

I have been married happily for 28 years, have 2 precious adult daughters and two gorgeous rescue cats. I work part-time in a Secondary school as a Learning Support Assistant.

In my free time, I love being with family and friends, doing Zumba, moderate exercise, listening to podcasts, reading, and watching TV.

I love going on holidays/vacations. I try to cruise at least once a year and still fast on these trips, just adapting my windows to what suits you.

I am so grateful to have discovered Fasting; it has given me the tools to make me feel good about myself, and I love to look and feel healthy.

Episode 242 Melanie Douglas A passion to share her incredible intermittent fasting lifestyle that has been life changing.

My name is Melanie Douglas. I live in Bangor, a seaside town in Northern Ireland. I’m 63 and married to John. Between us, we have 5 grown-up children and are expecting our 10th grandchild! I worked as a nurse for 35 years, before changing direction, becoming a Lay Pastor in our local church, before I retired last year! Since retiring, I have had the privilege of being a funeral celebrant … What an honour.. My battle, my torment with my weight, started like so many in my early teenage years…my mum was an amazing cook, and food was central to our family…huge portions, followed by ( IF we cleared our plates) sumptuous desserts…she would tell me when I was tired or grumpy, “ you need to eat”.. whipping out a packet of sweets, to pick me up…thus I learned the lie that sugar was my friend, my comfort, my go-to when life was hard…a deeply- ingrained belief that has sabotaged every diet I have ever tried…and I have tried them all..even becoming a Consultant for Slimming World ( akin to weight watchers) ..which showed me that calorie restriction does not work…I was in despair…true despair…I loved to be slim, longed to be free from the mental torment &

Episode 241 Janet Person -An inspiring IF story proving you are never too old to start and thrive.

I am 67 and have lived in the beautiful Pacific Northwest in Oregon for 42 years.  I have three grown children and am blessed to be close to one son, his family, and my daughter.  My other son, his wife, and their family are just a short flight away in Nevada.  I am also proud of a new, sweet little dog named Hazel.

I have been retired from being a paraprofessional at a small K-12 school since 2013, where I worked for 18 years.  All of my kids attended this school, too.

I fill my time with various activities that I enjoy.  Number one is spending time with family.  I often see my son and family who live near me and spend time with my busy daughter whenever possible.  I travel with my son, who lives nearby, his family, and my daughter to various places in other parts of Oregon.  Whenever I visit my son and his family in Nevada, they take me to different points of interest near them.  I have a sister who lives in California that I am very close to that, I see twice a year.  We love spending time together and getting out in each area where we live to explore the sites.  I enjoy getting out in nature when I can and love taking in all the beauty of where I live.  I like to knit and read, and listen to audiobooks.  Great things to fill the time on a rainy Oregon day.  I also love to do video workouts with Get Fit With Rick, a membership platform that I belong to.  I've been a part of this group for three years, and he led me to IF.  He started an IF challenge with the group and had Laurie Lewis, a fantastic IF coach, on a talk with him. One thing led to another, and I am fasting one year later. After living most of my life on a diet roller coaster, I am very thankful to IF for helping me to be healthy as I age and to be able to maintain my weight.

Episode 240 Christina Salata A story about more than just weight loss finding the music and joy within an incredible journey.

    Bio for Graeme

My name is Christina Salata. I’m 52 years young and married to My husband, who is getting ready to retire after 30 years as a chicago firefighter. We have four adult children and two grandchildren. I received my bachelors of Arts degree in sociology and human services in 1994. I worked in the corporate world until 2008. In 2008, I made a massive life change and became a walking mail carrier for the U.S. Postal Service.

I am a voracious reader, typically in the process of reading 3 or 4 different books on any given day. One I read in the morning before work. One at the end of my workday while waiting to punch out. One in the evening after dinner and one I keep by my bedside. All vary between history, world religions, philosophy, and science.

My favorite saying and the thing I’ve learned to say is “I don’t know” because I know when I say that I’m about to learn something new, and I love that!

I do yoga almost every day as a form of movement meditation and breath work that I've found extremely beneficial for my struggles with anxiety. Distance running has also been a natural remedy for my depression, and I hope to complete my first ultra-marathon in 2025.

My passion for the past three years has been writing a fictional book that is a metaphor for what I see happening in our world and the struggles and pain I’ve walked through (well, sometimes crawled through) in my life. It is not a project I write for anyone else but for myself. It has been cathartic, and therefore, I have not put a timeframe on it but let it flow from my brain to my fingertips as the universe intends it to and at its pace.

Fasting was/is a catalyst for massive change and healing in my life, my hope in sharing my story is that it resonates with someone and, in so doing, helps them as well
