280: Networking Is More Effective Than Traditional Job Search - How To Make It Easier

Today, we’re delighted to welcome back return guest, Austin Belcak, who joined us way back on episode five to talk about how to land a dream job at the salary you deserve, as well on episode 89 where he shared his insights on building an exceptional resume that gets real results. Through his personal experiences, Austin has developed a uniquely effective job search system that helped him go from being a new grad with a biology degree (and a job in healthcare) to landing interviews at multiple tech companies, including Microsoft, where he ended up working for over five years and was promoted multiple times.

Austin is the founder of Cultivated Culture, where he helps people secure jobs they’re passionate about, without relying on the need for traditional experience or online applications. The platform is a hugely valuable resource for job seekers and offers multiple free tools, including a resume builder and analyzer. He also hosts The Dream Job System Podcast where he shares bite-sized, highly actionable career advice. Additionally, Austin’s work has been featured in multiple publications including, Forbes, Business Insider, and Fast Co. Through his work he has helped thousands of job seekers earn roles at top companies like Google, Apple, and Amazon, without ever needing to apply online.

In today’s conversation with Austin, we delve into the subject of networking, why he’s found it to be infinitely more effective than traditional job-searching methods, and how he developed a jobs system that could help others just like him. We unpack why traditional approaches proved particularly ineffective for him, why he needed advice from people with first-hand experience, and how he went about reaching out to those individuals who could give him the insights he needed to succeed. Our conversation also examines some of the most common misconceptions when it comes to networking and what can be done to address them.

Austin’s parting message emphasizes the importance of investing in yourself and actively creating things that other people will find interesting, before breaking down exactly how this will help your networking journey in the long run. His story serves as a powerful reminder that following your intuition and finding a braver path, will often be far more effective than sticking to more traditional routes. Join us today to hear all of Austin’s eye-opening insights as we discuss the nuances of networking and finding the job you truly want!

275: Race Rules: What Your Black Friend Won't Tell You

Fatimah Gilliam is an author, lawyer, sought-after speaker, consultant, and founder of The Azara Group, a consulting firm that provides diversity and inclusion, leadership development, negotiation, and strategy consulting services to Fortune 500 corporations, senior executives leading billion-dollar businesses, and industry thought leaders.

Her groundbreaking book, Race Rules: What Your Black Friend Won't Tell You, is a practical manual of the unwritten rules that can help readers navigate today’s racially polarized world. In short, it’s a ‘how-to’ manual for white people to be less racially offensive; enabling them to develop stronger and more respectful cross-racial friendships and professional relationships with people of color.

Today, Fatimah joins us as “white America’s Black friend” to tell us what others won’t say to our faces nor share about perspectives of color on white behaviors, choices, and interactions. She shares deep, transformative insights from her book, which seeks to open the door to perspectives of color so white people can learn, make better choices, take different actions, and evolve with a diversifying society in the 21st century.

This conversation is an excellent source of well-informed and hard-hitting advice for those looking to move beyond performative allyship and live their non-racist values, rather than just talk about them. As we discuss, this is ideal for anyone who wants to bring the unconscious forward to consciousness, so they can take new actions every day that will directly and powerfully address and combat racism both in our own lives and behaviors, and in the world we live in. Tune in to learn more!

    Key Highlights From This Episode:

    •   What inspired Fatimah to write this book and what her intentions are for it. [04:31]

    •   Ways that being a light-skinned Black woman has impacted her view of racism. [07:57]

    •   Defining racism and why Fatimah chooses to focus on impact rather than intent. [09:53]

    •   The ‘how-to’ guide she offers and how Race Rules differs from other books on racism. [13:37]

    •   How racism is distinct from prejudice with the key ingredient being power. [18:42]

    •   Fatimah's “Top 5” of 31 race rules and insight into her three-step Bedrock Race Rule. [20:15]

    •   Othering, marginalization, and how to ensure the language you use isn’t offensive and   harmful. [28:00]

    •   Rules for discussing race for white people who see themselves as anti-racist allies. [33:59]

    •   Understanding the relationship between defensiveness and exceptionalism. [41:14]

    •   A favorite passage of Fatimah’s from Race Rules, where to get the book, parting advice, and more. [46:08]

    Quotes:

“Part of what I’m trying to [change] is the impact of people’s choices and behaviors and not the intent of their choices and behaviors. I want people to make better choices that positively impact communities and people of color.” — @fatimahgilliam [0:10:18]

“This is not about good and evil. It is about whether or not the impact of your choices harms people of color individually and collectively.” — @fatimahgilliam [0:11:05]

“With Race Rules, I’m trying to give people access to information so that they can live their values and not just talk about their values.” — @fatimahgilliam [0:18:10]

“What happens a lot of times when we’re talking about race is we move to all the other ‘isms’ and don’t focus on what is the hardest thing for American society to focus on: – having a conversation, evaluation, and analysis of race in peoples’ [personal and professional] lives.” — @fatimahgilliam [0:39:44]

“[All whites in America], even the person who is the most woke, liberal, and progressive, all of them are engaging in decisions in small [and] big ways that – have a harmful, racialized, negative impact on people of color.” — @fatimahgilliam [0:43:22]

“People can change collectively and individually. It has to start somewhere and I see Race Rules as my patriotic contribution to American society so that we can evolve.” — @fatimahgilliam [0:51:25]

274: How Playing Competitive Sports Supports Women's Leadership Success

It’s been proven that playing competitive sports continues to contribute significantly to the success and leadership growth that women experience in later life and in their careers. Joining me to share her first-hand insights and key observations from her own career and from recent important research on this topic, is Lara Abrash, Chair of Deloitte US, the largest professional services organization in the United States.

273: 6 Questions to Help You Create a Thrilling New Year

Thank you for listening to our Finding Brave show, ranked in the Top 100 Apple Career Podcasts!

Note: This is a special airing of a “holiday favorite selection” and is a repeat of our Finding Brave holiday episode #208.

“You just have to believe that there’s a higher version of you that you can tap into and that can access higher-level wisdom, insight, solutions, strategies, people, and connections. If you believe it, and if you believe it strongly, it’s amazing what happens in your life.” – Kathy Caprino

As we approach the end of another year, once again I’m happy to share this special “Holiday Selection,”  featuring some of the top Finding Brave episodes that have previously aired, to help you enter 2024 with even more bravery, inspiration, and motivation to pursue and achieve your most important and meaningful goals.

Today, I’m excited to bring you an episode from late 2018, where I shared a helpful year-end strategy of reflection — the process of reflecting back on the past year in an in-depth, careful, and probing way, exploring all that you’ve learned and experienced, created, and also “failed” at. (Note: I don’t perceive “failure” the way many others do. I view it as a vital learning” opportunity — as an effective experience that, when viewed from a positive framework, helps us get much clearer on who we are, what we need to thrive, and what we  really want in our lives.

This reflection process helps you connect in a powerful, deep way with your ultimate dreams and desires, and it highlights where you’ve been living “off course” – far away from what your most authentic self really wants.

In this episode, I explore what I’ve found to be six essential reflection questions that are perfect for this time of year, to help us take stock, expand our gratitude and appreciation for all that we are today, and set the wheels in motion for shifting our approach to how we operate, communicate, and engage with others and with our core challenges and power gaps. This reflection process hatches important new revelations, and sets the stage for a brand new future.

As always, be gentle and compassionate with yourself as you reflect, and remember that everything that’s happened can be used to bolster and uplift you, if you let it.  At the end of the show, I sing a little song to welcome in the New Year, from my heart to yours. I hope you enjoy it!

I’d love to hear how your answering these six questions impacts you and what it reveals. And  I welcome your suggestions for any future topics or interviewees that you’re interested in hearing from. Please reach out to me by email, or on social media via LinkedIn, or on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram and say hello and share your ideas!

I wish you and your loved ones a very Happy New Year and I’m looking forward to connecting with you and serving up fresh, new episodes of Finding Brave in 2024 that will move you forward to create life and work as you dream it to be.

    Happy New Year!

    Highlights from this Episode:

    • The benefits of reflection and what it can help you achieve these next 12 months [5:27]
    • What our lives are giving us, but we often miss [08:58]
    • Why you need to celebrate all of your wins, no matter how small you may think they are [10:30]
    • What I tell myself when things don’t seem to be working out for me and how we can reframe our experiences to benefit from them [14:31]
    • Why focusing on desired “outcomes” can be more helpful and instructive than “goals” and how turning your “mess into a message” can give you great clarity on what to do next [15:13]
    • Don’t agonize and overly attach to the specific “how’s” - just start moving forward any way you can [17:08]
    • Visualization truly works – here’s an exercise that I do [19:24]
    • What is your “higher self” and how you can receive help from it [22:29]

FINALLY, PLEASE ASK YOUR ORGANIZATION TO BRING THE MOST POWERFUL YOU TRAINING TO YOUR WORKFORCE TODAY

Is your organization committed to supporting the growth and success of both women and men in your workforce? If so, do they offer opportunities for powerful hands-on career growth and leadership training that addresses the real-world challenges that professional women face in the workplace and in their careers that are often different from what men typically face?

I’m so thrilled that recently, a division of the United Nations has sponsored several memberships to The Most Powerful You course for their staff members and what a powerfully supportive move that is, to bring real-world effective career and leadership training to professionals in their work cultures, to help them thrive and succeed and the highest level possible in their work and projects.

Coaching so many professionals and leaders as I do each year, I see that leadership and career growth training programs today are often NOT effective because they simply don’t go deep enough to address what really holds us back from thriving, believing in ourselves, recognizing our talents and abilities, communicating effectively, asking for what we need, saying “STOP!” to mistreatment, building a great support community, and making the true impact we long to.

How do we separate our work selves and our personal lives when technology and social media have made those lines blurrier than ever? Joining us today to unpack this topic and three key “future of work” trends is Elizabeth J. Sandler, founder and CEO of Echo Juliette, a forward-thinking company that works with executive teams on strategy and leadership development. Elizabeth is a seasoned professional with 25 years of experience as a COO and Strategist in Investment Banking and Private Equity in the US and UK. 271: How To Recognize and Release The Damaging Shame You Hold

Are your thoughts and actions regularly dictated by a harsh inner critic? Do you find yourself filled with feelings of unworthiness and that you are undeserving of love? If so, you may well be dealing with the symptoms of core shame. Our guest, David Jurasek, knows firsthand the devastating impact shame can have on your life and relationships, and he joins us today to shed light on this urgent topic. Drawing on his 25 years of experience as a mentor and therapist, David’s work is defined by his belief that your biggest source of sabotage is driven by core shame. He is the founder of Powerful and Loving, a community helping men and boys become powerful leaders who cultivate thriving relationships. Additionally, he is the author of My Heart Is A Muscle, a book that he wrote with the hopes of moving 500 men in the deepest way possible. In today’s conversation, we unpack the concept of core shame, where it tends to stem from, the devastating impact it can have on our lives, and how we can begin to release and heal from it. David opens up about the role that shame played in his life and explains why identifying its root cause is so important. We explore how our shame-based society prevents us from looking inward and the power of healthy relationships and community in helping us heal from shame. Our conversation also investigates the role of shame in our relationships and how we can break patterns of blame and criticism, before exploring how to go about dethroning your inner critic, followed by simple and effective techniques to help you process and let go of shame. Today’s episode is filled with profound insights and will give you a newfound understanding of the complexities of shame and its impact.
