Introducing Karla Cornejo Villavicencio on “Catalina,” the Tale of an Undocumented Student at Harvard from The New Yorker Radio Hour.

Follow the show: The New Yorker Radio Hour

Catalina Ituralde is the protagonist of the novel that bears her name, “Catalina.” In the summer before her senior year of college, she’s working as an intern at a prestigious literary magazine, and come fall she’ll be back at Harvard to plot her future. But, contrary to a life of comfort that this scenario suggests, Catalina’s situation is complicated and uncertain: she’s an undocumented immigrant, raised in Queens by her grandparents, and after graduation she might not have the privilege of choosing what job she takes. “Catalina” is the second book by Karla Cornejo Villavicencio, who first gained attention with the essay “I’m an Illegal Immigrant at Harvard,” published anonymously in the Daily Beast; her first book, “The Undocumented Americans,” was a finalist for the National Book Award. Though Villavicencio has since become an American citizen, “There’s this Latin American paranoia that comes from my parents, [who] grew up under a dictatorship,” she tells David Remnick. “I’ve heard all of these stories . . . and then there’s also being undocumented here, where the idea that I could disappear at any time, my parents could disappear at any time – I don’t think that I’m necessarily capable of feeling that kind of permanence.”

Economic Espionage and War Crimes: How Money Wins the War | Graham Moore PT 1

Welcome to another power-packed episode of Impact Theory, I’m Tom Bilyeu!

Today I’m joined by Graham Moore, a New York Times-bestselling novelist and Academy Award-winning filmmaker who recently published the book “The Wealth of Shadows” about how economics were used to break the back of the Nazi war machine during WWII. You can get your copy of the book here: https://a.co/d/fc0oBT2

In this episode, Graham and I dive deep into how economics played a crucial role in defeating the Nazi war machine during WWII, draw fascinating parallels to today's strategies against Russia, and tackle modern issues like AI's impact on art and the morality of government decisions.

    We also touch on:

    • - German economic revival and military expansion in the 1930s
    • - Modern Russian economic strategies & the preservation of economic independence
    • - Consequences of weaponized economic and political agendas
    • - Historical events and manipulation of wars post-WWII
    • - Importance of free speech and gun ownership
    • - The modern day value system and its impacts on society
    • - Use of AI in film and art
    • - Historical context & influence of WWII economic policies
    • - Modern-day undeclared wars and inflation concerns
    • - Perspectives on gun control and nuclear weapons
    • - Importance of public input on significant decisions

This episode promises a thought-provoking journey through history, economics, and the future of technology, touching on crucial themes like freedom, government power, and the moral implications of decision-making.
