As we mill about our lives, interacting with those that we know, or think we know, & those that we simply pass on the street, there’s sometimes no way of knowing what lies beneath the surface of a friendly smile. For all intents & purposes, Carl Eric “Charlie” Brandt seemed like a completely even-keeled, happy person. He was in what appeared to be a happy marriage that others envied, but it turned out he was hiding an exceptionally deep, dark secret. This case highlights the question: Do we ever truly know the full depths of another person?

On the morning of Saturday, July 21, 2018, Lana Clayton ran out of her house, claiming that she found her husband, Steve Clayton, dead at the bottom of the staircase in their South Carolina home. The coroner initially believed that Steve’s death was a result of a heart attack, but as time went by, his family began to notice that Lana was acting strangely. This prompted further investigation which shifted the whole picture in another direction.

Where there is history, there is haunting & the Ohio State Reformatory is a prime example of a place with not only history behind it, but also many deaths. Throughout the 94 years it held prisoners, more than 200 people perished from disease, accident, murder or suicide. Many claim that very active spirits continue to roam the rooms of the large prison which remains open to the public & serves as an active stomping ground for ghost hunters.

The Witman family consisted of parents Ron & Sue & their two sons, 15-year old Zach & 13-year-old Greg who lived in the small, quiet town of New Freedom, Pennsylvania. The town was shocked & saddened when they learned the tragic news that 13-year-old Greg had been ambushed in his own home moments after walking through the front door as he came home from school. Even more chilling, they soon learned that the murderer was Greg’s own teenage brother who slashed him to the point of decapitation.

22-year-old Jennifer Servo had big dreams for her career in journalism & worked tirelessly with the goal of one day becoming the next Katie Couric. During her time on air, Jennifer covered murder cases & sadly, it was her own murder that went on to become one of the most perplexing unsolved cases in Texas history. Only weeks after she uprooted her life from Montana to Abilene, Texas to start her first journalism job after college, Jennifer was found brutally murdered inside her apartment.

Bournemouth, England was found to be one of the happiest places in the UK with 82% of those polled expressing happiness with where they lived. However, in 2002, the town was stricken with fear when they learned that a woman had been brutally murdered in her home at 211 Capstone Road & her mutilated body was discovered by her children as they returned home from school. Investigators eventually realized that this horrific case was tied to an unsolved murder that happened 9 years earlier & nearly 1,500 miles/2,400 kilometers away in Potenza, Italy.

On Friday, May 5, 2017, 18-year-old Brooke Skylar Richardson, who went by Skylar, attended her senior prom. Less than 48 hours later she gave birth to a baby girl in the bathroom of her family home in the middle of the night. Other than the OB-GYN she’d seen in April to obtain a prescription for birth control pills, not a soul was aware of the fact that Skylar was even pregnant. The young girl later claimed that her baby girl that she’d named Annabelle was stillborn & she went on to bury her in her backyard. The Ohio teen went on to be charged with murder & was vilified by social media.

As you scroll through social media at the smiling, picture perfect images, much of what you see is only an illusion & a moment in time of a full life that’s happening outside the lens of the camera. You’re likely judging your own life in comparison to these images of what likely look like perfection; a gorgeous, tidy home, children in trendy, unblemished clothing, exotic travels to places you’ve yet to go. But these are just the carefully selected images the creator is choosing to share with the world as they present the best versions of their lives during their highest moments. People aren’t posting images of themselves laying on the couch after a rough day, the house in disarray, the fights between their children or spouses. We’re not privy to what happens after the camera is gone & in some cases, what we see is not at all reality. This is the story of a terrible mother, Ruby Franke.
