Creating critical thinkers with Kate Whitaker

In this episode of Untidy, Matty and Hannah are joined by Kate Whitaker, Senior Advisor at Te Mana Whakaatu Classification Office for New Zealand and an expert in education and outreach. She has over a decade of classroom teaching and facilitation experience under her belt and is driven to enhance the lives of New Zealanders through practical resources for whānau and teachers, helping them to have open kōrero about challenging topics like harmful media and pornography.

Kate’s work focuses on empowering youth, caregivers, and educators to build critical media literacy skills and break down the stigma surrounding these conversations. She shares actionable strategies to help parents feel equipped to guide their children through today’s media landscape, encouraging resilience and critical thinking rather than fear of what can feel like a daunting prospect in this modern era of parenting.

This episode delves into the importance of moving away from ‘moral panic’ and toward proactive, meaningful discussions and teaching self-management skills to tamariki and rangatahi youth. Kate highlights the tools available to New Zealanders for addressing these issues with confidence, offering insights into the role we all play in creating a safer, more understanding environment for young people.

The Bermuda Triangle used to be an issue

In this episode of Untidy, hosts, Matilda Green and Hannah Davison respond to the call of swathes of hot, brain-fogged, enraged, peri-menopausal women who are feeling frustrated, ignored, dismissed and sometimes a bit depressed about the difficulty they’re having getting clear information and proper support with their symptoms of peri-menopause. They unpack the complexities of perimenopause and holistic health with naturopath Emily Rose Yates.

Emily Rose Yates is a highly respected naturopath with a Bachelor of Health Sciences in Naturopathy, alongside advanced diplomas in herbal medicine, nutrition, and homeopathy. You can ring my bell!

In this episode of Untidy, Matty and Hannah share a little Halloween nostalgia, or rather, a history of underwhelm and awkwardness as they wonder how to bypass the event they’re underprepared for. A listener delights them with a video message as she teaches her daughter quick comebacks after the recent episode with Kasey Edwards on ‘Raising kids who like themselves’.

Hannah’s offered a statement dog from a listener as she sets another honeytrap for eligible animal lovers, and, they discuss the merits of dogs with small surface area. She opens up about re-entering the dating world and the complexities of setting boundaries and managing expectations. They reflect on societal pressure to “catch up” to others' expectations.

Finally, the roleplay mishap story that leaves both girls crying with laughter. (No spoilers here!)

Leading the charge with Cecilia Robinson

In this episode of Untidy, Hannah and Matty chat to one of Aotearoa New Zealand's most successful entrepreneurs, Cecilia Robinson. Cecilia shares her remarkable journey, from her beginnings in Sweden to founding AuPairLink, My Food Bag, and her latest venture, Tend—a digital-first healthcare provider. Named 2024 Innovator of the Year, Cecilia is also a mother of three and is leading the charge with her advocacy for a smartphone-free childhood. Alongside sharing her insights as an entrepreneur and leader, Cecilia talks about how she intertwines her life in business with her personal life and how her experiences as a mother of three shape her views on technology, parenting, relationships and business.

Cecilia shares her challenges of balancing work and family life, highlighting the importance of integration over the elusive concept of balance. She also speaks passionately about the mental health crisis linked to social media and smartphones, advocating for legislative changes to protect younger generations and her commitment to a smartphone-free childhood.

Cecilia is a powerhouse with a deep sense of purpose. She’s come to accept that forging new paths and leading the charge doesn’t necessarily go hand-in-hand with likability. With raw honesty, Cecilia shares both the personal and professional sides of being a modern-day leader passionate about delivering a healthier future for New Zealanders.

Cauliflower’s punching, lost lumberjacks, and Matty’s country life

In this episode of Untidy, Matty and Hannah are back from their holidays with the chaotic energy of a toddler given two cans of Coke and a free puppy. They start as they mean to continue by striding out on a tangent that puts cauliflower back in its place. After determining school holidays remain an absolute nonsense for the working parent, Matty discovers that 82% of listeners support her in feeling victimised by the over-ripe banana — seemingly a recidivist offender of culinary crimes nationwide.

While Matty’s been living her best English Country Living life, Hannah’s had a deep spiritual adventure in India that wouldn’t be complete without a couple of laps around the Bristol Stool Chart. They both agree to petition for the ‘butt hose’ to become the norm in Kiwi toilets.

A marriage celebrant suggests Hannah shouldn’t lose all hope in dating apps, but, Hannah’s got a better plan simply involving an extra-large statement dog and loitering with intent.

Our gender identity journey with Melissa Banks

In this episode of Untidy, Hannah and Matty speak to Melissa Banks, a team leader, early childhood educator, step-mum to two, and mum to 10-year-old, Lilly, who embarked on a gender identity journey at age seven. Melissa shares her touching and illuminating story of finding her way through parenting a gender-questioning child when there was no real roadmap to go by.

They discuss how their journey manifested and what steps they took to start moving forward, how they sought support from family, friends, the school, and other members of the rainbow community, how Melissa surrendered to an uncertain journey of open-ended exploration, the issues they faced, and the gift that it’s ultimately given them both along the way.

This episode is a beautiful example of respectful, responsive parenting and finding a way forward by allowing the child to be the master of their own experience. Happy listening!
