Tim Ross Reflects on Merrick & Rosso, Triple J, Teaching Kathy Griffin Aussie Slang & More

    TIM ROSS (AKA Rosso):

A lot of New Zealanders won’t know who Rosso is and that’s exciting- because it means you about to get to know a cool person.

In the early 2000s when Rosso and I became mates, he was part of Australia’s number 1 radio show, “The Merrick and Rosso show.”

In 2009, Rosso quit radio and since then has successfully combined his passion for comedy and architecture by doing hundreds of standup comedy shows at some of the most architecturally acclaimed houses around the world. Also he’s made a bunch of documentaries, wrote a ton of books, got married, had a family, quit booze and lost his mum- we unpack a lot of the Tim Ross journey here.

Including how he met and teamed up with his comedy partner, Merrick Watts.

Their groundbreaking stand-up act and how that became one of the most innovative and successful radio shows of all time.

We discuss some of his best A list celebrity encounters including Sylvester Stallone, Will Ferrell and David Bowie. MC-ing Sam Neills star studded 60th birthday party, impersonating Russell Crowe as an ongoing TV sketch and lots more.

Then the important stuff- losing his mum, his reflections on that time, and somehow finding beauty in the grief. And his thoughts on getting older. This is Rosso as you’ve probably never heard him before.

This episode has been bought to you thanks to Skin Institute.

It’s estimated that about 20% of all adults will get varicose veins at some point in their lives. Although they’re more common in older people, young people sometimes have them, too.

And despite popular belief, varicose veins is not a cosmetic complaint – if left untreated, they can lead to serious health issues.

Skin Institute are THE experts to diagnose and treat varicose veins and use the latest non-surgical techniques.

If you have health insurance, there’s a good chance your treatment will be covered – just check with your provider.

Lewis Clareburt on World Swimming Title Win & Pukana, Going Viral at Tokyo Olympics & More!

Lewis Clareburt is the golden boy of NZ swimming.

He won 2 golds and a bronze at the last Commonwealth games and recently became a world champion at Doha.

Lots of good stuff in this conversation- going viral on Tik Tok for his Olympics behind the scenes content, his insane training schedule and the sacrifices involved, the recent drama that saw him break up with his coach and move cities, coping with pressure and much, much more. This was a chance to tap into the brain of one of New Zealand’s most driven and talented athletes at the peak of his powers so I hope you guys love it.

Thanks to the legends at Radix and Generate for sponsoring this episode.

If you are yet to see what the hype with Radix all is about, you should try them out. From their factory in the Waikato they are exporting nutrition products to NZ and the world that will make you look and feel better.

Their breakfast, meals and drink powders are simply world class. I start every day with a protein shake made with their powder and at least a few times each week I’ll smash a Radix freeze-dried just-add-water meal. Not just for the convenience and nutrients either- they taste great:

    https://radixnutrition.co.nz/

Also a massive thanks to the Generate KiwiSaver Scheme.

I recently found out that around half a million Kiwis are missing out on the KiwiSaver Government contribution, which is an extra $521 each year.

That’s extra money, that’s well worth getting if you can. And that's where Generate comes in – they make this stuff easy. They have a team of advisers who can come to you, go over your options, and help make sure you’re getting the most out of your KiwiSaver investment – including how to get that $521 from the government.

If you’ve never got KiwiSaver advice before, request a meeting with a Generate adviser:

From Alcoholic to Running Ultra Marathons in The Sahara & The Arctic - Freddie Bennett

    FREDDIE BENNETT:

Freddie, an Englishman who now calls New Zealand home, shares his remarkable pivot from life in one fast lane to life in another fast lane.

In his old life he was chasing cheap dopamine with copious amounts of alcohol and cocaine.

Now he’s leaning into the search for a quality dopamine hit by pushing his body to the limit physically and doing epic s**t.

And in the process, becoming a better person and making himself and his family and friends proud which is cool.

At the time of recording this, Freddie was preparing to leave NZ to take part in a 5-day 250km running event in the Artic. This involves carrying all the food and equipment he needs to survive, temperatures of -50 and running over frozen lakes and mountains. Very different to the cocaine blizzards Freddie used to experience in his past life in the UK.

We talk about the moment in New York where a drug dealer held a gun to Freddie's head, the sudden death of his dad and this impact that had on him, his decision to move to NZ with his family and much more. I hope this episode and Freddie's transformation inspires you to get a little more out of your own life.

Simon Bridges Reflects on Relationships with Winston, Jacinda, Slushies, Scooters & More!

Simon is the former leader of the National party, and the first ever Māori to lead a major party in New Zealand.

We cover a lot of ground here- the good, the bad and the ugly. And there is plenty of each!

We chat about his very recent serious fall off a Lime scooter, his early acting role on Hercules, his law career including his time as a crown prosecutor and the toll that takes on a person’s mental health.

Then we get into politics- including his regular TV appearances with Jacinda Arden and the on-screen chemistry they had. Getting told off by then PM John Key, receiving death threats, being publicly mocked for how he speaks, his reflections on voting against hay marriage. Life after politics and much much more.

Thanks to my friends at Radix and Generate for sponsoring this episode.

Meet the Kiwi who ran 8000km across Canada for Cancer Research- Jon Nabbs Incredible Journey

    JON NABBS

I caught up with Jon the day after he landed back in New Zealand after completing an absurd personal running challenge in Canada.

Dressed in a superman suit and pushing a stroller containing all his supplies- tent, sleeping bag, food, electronics, everything- he spent 305 days running from one side of Canada to the other- 7351km- solo and unsupported.

In the process he raised over $100,000 for child cancer research.

His why could not be any more significant either- during the pandemic he lost both his parents to different cancers within a year of each other.

I was inspired and I hope you will be too. Jon Nabbs is just a normal guy who has gone through some really unfair stuff, so decided to process his trauma by doing something really cool. Or crazy. Probably both.

Thanks to my mates at Generate and Radix for sponsoring this episode.

Jon Toogood on Shihad, Converting to Islam, Pacifier Name Change, Touring with AC/DC & More!

Jon Toogood is a New Zealand rock god.

As a teenager in Wellington, he swapped his cricket bat for a guitar, formed a band called Shihad and never looked back.

Since then, he has been named NZ vocalist of the year 3 times and has even been inducted into the NZ music hall of fame.

It’s not very often you get this sort of unfiltered access and time with a rock star who has been to hell and back so this was a real treat.

My Session with Stylebender's Therapist - Discussing Trauma & Mental Health with Janet Redmond

Janet Redmond calls herself a possibility manager. That title is basically her reworking of the word therapist.

She was previously a trauma specialist, training psychotherapists and counsellors.

I reached out to Janet immediately after watching the Israel Adesanya documentary movie, “Stylebender.”  I thought this grandmother from Nelson in the campervan the surprise star of the film.

This is a podcast of two halves. We chat about her relationship with Izzy and a little bit about who she is and what she does to help people. Then, she gets to work on me. Janet is an incredible human with an amazing gift. But I’ve been scared about sharing it. I guess because I still feel embarrassed when I cry or show some vulnerability. I know that allowing yourself to be vulnerable is a strength and not a weakness. And it’s something I encourage from my guests. But it is still something I am struggling with myself.

Thanks to my mates at Generate and Radix for sponsoring this episode.

Olivia McTaggart - Pole Vaulter Opens Up About Body Image, Online Objectification & Tall Poppy Syndrome

Olivia McTaggart is 24 years old and is one of the greatest pole-vaulters NZ has ever produced.

Her highest jump, so far, is 4 meters 71cm (for comparison, the height of a double decker bus is 4 meters 40 centimeters).

At 18 she fulfilled her childhood dream of going to the Commonwealth Games and finished in the top 10. Then at her 2nd Commonwealth Games she finished 4th. This year, she is hoping to raise the bar- excuse the pun- and go to the Olympics in Paris.

If, like me, you know nothing about pole vaulting you are in for an education as we break down one of the most technical and complex and fascinating sports around. But this is so much more than a sports chat. Liv and I discuss so much cool stuff that I know we can all get some value from:

    Building confidence through hard work.

Her 3 P’s: Passion, Persistence and Pride.

Body image and so much more.

Her pre-pole-vault mantra is “Calm and dangerous” and those 2 words definitely describe Liv.

Thanks to the legends who have made this conversation possible- Radix and Generate.
