A weekly podcast featuring news and reviews from around the watch world as reported on aBlogtoWatch.com
This week onaBlogtoWatchWeekly, the only two usual suspects are Rick and David.Ariel and Ripley are in flight, or fleeing, or otherwise elsewhere. They are, instead, joined by semi-regular, non-suspect Azad and Kevin, and then surpriseguest, Leslie. All of the Euro-men are complaining about the weather ('tis therainy season in the UK, ya know). They get right down to business with adiscussion of the news that Rolex has retired its Carl F. Bucherer brand, andthere are various degrees of lament in the room. Next up, a look at Breitling'srevival of the Gallet brand. The guys muse about how they'll position thesewatches. Then, they discuss Ariel's most recent column in his absence. He asksthe question, "Are Swiss luxury watch brands engaging consumersenough?" The new game, which seems to have taken off, ensues:Judge theCollab. Fun! But where did fan-favoriteHit, Miss, Maybe go?And will it ever return?
This week on aBlogtoWatch Weekly, Rick, Ariel, David, and Ripley are, for the second week in a row, all in their respective home cities and Rick teases the show's preamble by announcing a very special new limited-edition series of watch cases made by the team's AV garbage. That's all we'll say, for now. (The show is banned in Nepal, but why?) All the guys have new podcast-designed mics and are feeling quite professional, at the moment. Getting down to business, Rick asks Ariel and David, "How limited is the new limited-edition Grand Seiko Evolution 9 Hi-Beat watch?" (Ripley already knows because he wrote the article.) Next on the docket is the Panerai Radiomir 8 Giorni Eilean Experience Edition watch, which Rick rightly points out looks identical to the Studio Underd0g X Fears "The Gimlet" watch released on the same day. Ripley shares the backstory about the yacht after which the Panerai is named — and a purchase comes with a trip to Sicily! It'll only set you back 43k. Ripley shares his take on who did this design first, historically, and he adds that the Studio Underd0g costs £1000 GBP (but doesn't include a trip to Italy. Rick addresses the elephant in the room: Why would anyone buy the Panerai over the Studio Underd0g? You'll have to tune in to learn the answer. This slides into a new game Rick devised called "Judge the Collab" — you'll be shocked, I say, shocked by the guys' ratings. The game catches on, and other colllab judgment follows. Tune in to get all the juicy horological details.
Show Notes To Follow
This week on aBlogtoWatch Weekly, the gang is all together again and settled into their respective rectangles, all shockingly in their home bases. Rick begins by segueing from the live broadcast of the show (after the clap-in) to reflect on the previous conversation about blue foods being the "taste of 'merica). When they get down to business, the first item on the agenda is the Tudor Black Bay Chrono Flamingo-Blue watch, and it suddenly seems that blue is a theme! But make no mistake; this is NOT "Tiffany blue." But it's really, really close. Next up is a bargain new-release: the Omega Speedmaster Moonphase Meteorite — a bargain only because it's in steel and is a manual-wind. But it exceeds Ripley's expectations, not only in price, which is saying a lot. David then talks about the special laid-back demeanor of Chopard as a brand. He walks us through his hands-on of the L.U.C. Lunar One Perpetual Calendar watches, which he saw in the metal last week at the Chopard manufacture. Let's just cut to the chase: David says it's a "bonkers" watch. The guys have some fun going around the virtual room showing us what they're wearing today (both Ripley and Ariel are wearing the Casio ring watch), and David is wearing the cheapest diamond-set watch in the world. He also reports that he saw a Trump watch in the wild, and the team grills him on deets. For some godforsaken reason, this leads them down the rabbit hole of the Trump watch website. Weird! Thank goodness they finally turn the page and play Hit, Miss Maybe.
This week on aBlogtoWatch Weekly, Rick is
baaaaaaaack to the land of the living — but where is David? Ariel and Ripley are here, and despite the fact that the word "snot" has been mentioned more times than the law should allow in the first five minutes, Rick is also kind enough to ask Ariel and Ripley how they're doing re the fires in Los Angeles. It's a lot. But we're all comforted by talk of watches, so they guys get right to it, and Ariel discusses a dystopian future when watch media is too thin to cover the watch industrial complex run by the corporate world. Where are the visionaries, the mavericks? Ripley dovetails with this idea and underscores the virtues of not being in any brand's back pocket, i.e., the argument for independent watch media and multiple voices. The trio then takes a look at the new Omega Speedmaster Meteorite Moonphase watches. There is some playful banter and some legit debate. Ripley is triple-wristing, and he shows of his Casio watch ring, a sight not to be missed. Next up, they team discusses the latest from Vacheron Constantin, priced at a mere 32k. But the question is: Hit, Miss or Maybe? (Ariel has A LOT to say here.) And what about the new Tissot Chemin des Tourelles Skeleton? Gateway drug or easy-access formula — or both? Lastly, how can one diss The Muppets? Find out in this discussion of the new Oris ProPilot X Miss Piggy watch.

This week on aBlogtoWatch Weekly, Rick is out sick (but he is listening). David and Ripley are present and accounted for, and Ariel jumps right in with a discussion of some of his predictions for 2025. He thinks the theme song from The Rocky Horror Picture Show is the best background for this discussion because we're in somewhat of a time warp. His top five trends? Listen in to find out. Hint: There are five, and he goes through them one by one and asks the others what they think of his powers of prophecy. Ariel then turns attention to two fun year-end roundups, the 10 articles we published in 2024 that got the most eyeballs and our top 10 articles with the highest number of reader comments. Next up, there's a discussion of the Longines Ultra-Chron Carbon watch, and the guys go back and forth on the merits of this particular design. What about the TAG Heuer's return as the official Formula 1 timekeeper? David gives an overview of what this article covers, both historically and in the present. MB&F's new M.A.D. Edition watches are the next topic of conversation, along with the various ways you can get your hands on one. Talk gets racy with consideration of Breguet's Classique 7145 Lunar New Year 2025 (luxe House of Slytherin, says Ripley). There's a segway to convo about American watchmaking, and Ripley elaborates on Mike's thesis: There will be no full-scale return to American watchmaking. Instead of Hit, Miss, Maybe, the team ends the show by looking at the latest Favre Leuba.
This week on aBlogtoWatch Weekly, Rick is virtually flanked not only by Ripley, David, and Ariel, but he's also got three guests on board for this week: Kevin Roberts, Alon Ben Joseph, and Simon Ryan. They begin by doing a round-robin of "Where are you, and what are you wearing?" meaning "What watch are you wearing." This greases the wheels for Rick's Rules of Order, in which Rick discusses how the show will unfold vis-a-vis the four categories he's asked each guest to speak to on this NYE show: the best watch release of 2024; the best brand of 2024; the worst watch release of 2024; and the most "bang-average" watch of 2024 (which causes understandable confusion for the non-UK participants). Tune in to hear what each watch lover has to say at the tail end of this interesting year of watches.

This week on aBlogtoWatch Weekly, Rick is once again lost in the Scottish countryside as Ariel, David, and Ripley hold down the holiday podcast fort. Things start off with a deep dive into Seiko's Incredibly Specialized Watch Exhibition 2, including watches for Santa, ninjas, and DJs.
Then they get down to brass tacks with the ABTW team's favorite releases from 2024 and a discussion of how the team approaches the decision. Then it's on to a few new watches, including a lighter and a teeny tiny G-Shock for your finger. • Seiko's Incredibly Specialized Watch Exhibition 2|Seiko Design

This week on aBlogtoWatch Weekly, Brother Rick is conspicuously absent, so it's Ariel running the show alongside Ripley and David, who all know that to take a podcast vacation now would be to deprive listeners of the comfort of a discussion of their watch hobby straight to their ears. The guys get right to it with a look the new Venezianico Arsenale. Ariel proposes that when glasses take over smartwatches, the wrist will become available again for useless things like mechanical timekeeping. They veer off associatively into the rabbit hole of augmented reality. Getting back to basics, Ripley posits that when simplicity is done right, it can be more impressive than a busy dial because your attention is focused only on a few elements. Next up is the Rolex Sky-Dweller 226938 18k yellow-gold watch, which Ariel likes quite a lot, even though the dial has never sold him on "pretty." Ripley says he'd take it over a Nautilus or a Royal Oak. David agrees that it's a powerful watch in its complications and execution, but it's not right for his wrist (too heavy). Then the team discusses David's most recent "Grinding Gears" article, in which he asks "How long should watch brands milk historic achievements?" Next up is a look at the new Bulova Lunar Pilot "Blood Moon" watch, which David thinks is too large even in its smallest form, but everyone loves the story of this watch. Listen in for more. Speaking of small, the Hamilton PSR74, a modern LED with a retro look. David isn't sure he would spend upwards of $800 on this watch, though he's happy it exists. Then, they discuss the watch that the Venezianico Arsenale wants to be: the Parmigiani Tonda PF Sport Chronograph in Milano Blue. They end with a look at a deep dive into Bulgari's new watch manufacture and the Hands-On: Tudor Pelagos FXD Chrono 'Cycling Edition' And The Role Of Watches In Professional Cycling | aBlogtoWatch Maybe when Rick gets back, he'll bring Hit, Miss, Maybe with him.
This week on aBlogtoWatch Weekly, Rick is back in the proverbial saddle, and the laughs are on high volume again. Ripley is adorned in Tudor cycling gear from head to toe, and Rick admonishes the team by noting their "rubbishment" of Panerai from last week's show, which David wholeheartedly defends. When they get down to business, the "JaGUar" (stet) rebrand is the first item on the docket. (Rick pronounces the word phonetically, which seems to be a British thing.) Then, the guys wax sardonic on a $6.2 million banana "art piece," which segues into a convo about why ABTW doesn't cover watch auctions. Next up, they muse about the pantone color of the year, "mellow brown" and ponder whether or not this will trickle down to watch design. They get serious about Hublot's newest release, complaining about a whole lot of things. As (almost) always, they end with the traditional Hit, Miss, Maybe.

This week on aBlogtoWatch Weekly, the opening question is: Where's Rick? Ariel, David, and Ripley ponder Rick's potential whereabouts, with guesses from something related to farming to simply taking a good old-fashioned vacation. The working proletariat goes on without him. Ariel takes the wheel and shares his astonishment at just how many new watch brands are out there; Ripley concurs. If these guys haven't heard of a brand, who on earth could possibly keep up? Jerome Lambert is the next topic of conversation, and the guys ponder his re-assumption of the CEO-ship of Jaeger LeCoultre — is this a demotion? A promotion, of sorts? Ariel thinks going back to the product zone is a promotion; David likens it to sending one's best general onto the battlefield. Ripley discusses the Hamilton Dune and Hamilton's long history of supplying watches for the film industry. (Don't call it a watch — it's a wrist-worn device.) Then, the team deconstructs the new Panerai Submersible, and there's a lot to unpack. They move on to a discussion of where watches fit into the larger luxury landscape. And they can't resist pondering the question of the difference between grade 2 and grade 5 titanium. They end with a question, just as they began: Does Ripley's Honda Fit deserve its own watch? Listen in and find out.
