Between Two Beers Podcast

Steven Holloway & Seamus Marten

Good questions. Great guests. Few beers... Steve and Seamus like asking good questions. And they love good answers. After over 20 years of friendship, they bought a microphone and started a podcast, allowing them to sit with, and learn from, the most interesting people they can access. From Kiwi legend Marc Ellis, to media personalities Jeremy Wells and Paddy Gower, Rugby coach extraordinaire Wayne Smith, sexologist Morgan Penn, and Olympian Dame Lisa Carrington...  Between Two Beers has produced countless hours of incredible stories, career highs, lows and moments of raw vulnerability. And it’s only the beginning. iHeartRadio NZ Podcast Network

Dr Alia Bojilova: Ex-NZ SAS Psychologist on Surviving Kidnapping in Syria & Resilience Tools

Strap in for this one, because Dr. Alia Bojilova is one of the most impressive guests we’ve had on the show.

She moved to New Zealand from Bulgaria as a 17-year-old who didn’t speak a word of English but soon became the lead psychologist for the New Zealand SAS.

After leaving the military she embarked on a PhD, focusing on the concept of resilience and is now a world leader in the field, working with some of the biggest names, companies and athletes in the world.

In 2013, Alia was working as a United Nations military observer in Syria when she and two colleagues were kidnapped by rebel fighters, held at gunpoint and told they were going to be decapitated on camera.

In this chat Alia explains why she and her colleagues were held hostage, how they managed to negotiate their release using the skills she’d developed with the SAS.

Alia is also married to former guest Jamie Pennell – who you might remember from our episode last year – as the SAS solider who won NZ’s second highest military honor – the Gallantry Star.

This was such an epic chat, and Alia’s story, her insight and the way she holds herself – will blow you away.

We're also stoked to tell you about the business we've built. If you'd like to get one of our epic guests in to MC or Speak at your function or event, flick us a message by going to B2Bspeakers.co.nz.

“I’m Calling You Out!” - Business Coach Di Foster Give Us a Brutal Reality Check (Accidental Business Owners #13)

Welcome to the latest episode of Accidental Business Owners.

This is a show we ran last year on our Business in Between channel – but this year we’re bringing it onto our main feed.

The premise of the show is that last year Steve and Seamus became fulltime business owners. We left our 9-5s to go all in on Between Two Beers – and thought it would be interesting to document our journey.

Last year we started working with a business and mindset coach Di Foster, who you might remember as a guest on the podcast and quickly realized she was the perfect foil to help them work through all the highs and lows of being a business owner. We recorded 12 episodes of Accidental Business Owners – and this was our last recording of 2024.

It was recorded on a Saturday morning in mid-December – the day after a half-day strategic meeting with Di and our accountant Matt Hinton - at the end after our busiest week of the year. So it’s fair to say tensions and emotions were delicately poised – as we tried to chart a path to success in 2025 across our podcast, B2B Speakers and B2B Reflections.

This episode is a bit of a ride, and pretty raw, but we’re really excited to show more of what’s happening behind the scenes with us in 2025.

Hang in there for Di’s big serve at the end, when she thought the mics were off.

    Enjoy.

Sean Fitzpatrick on All Blacks Legacy & Captaincy, Nelson Mandela, and Incredible Career After Rugby

Sean Fitzpatrick is recognized as one of the greatest All Blacks of all time.

He was capped 92 times by New Zealand, 51 of those as captain, is a World Cup winner, and a key member of one of the best rugby teams ever.

But Sean is more than just the sum of his rugby achievements.

After rugby retirement, at the age of 40, he moved his family to the UK – and has been there since. He’s now the Chairman of the Laureus World Sport Academy and the stories he tells in this one of what his job is, the sporting superstars he now calls friends – and how he’s helping make an impact on the world – will blow you away.

In this one we talk leadership, business lessons, revolutionizing captaincy, Nelson Mandela, Jonah Lomu the future of rugby and so much more.

We loved spending time with Fitzy and left inspired by his approach and outlook on life and his work ethic.

We're also stoked to tell you about the business we've built. If you'd like to get one of our epic guests in to MC or Speak at your function or event, flick us a message by going to B2Bspeakers.co.nz.

Mark Stafford: 20 Years at the TAB, Surviving Tragic Car Crash, MS Diagnosis & Testicular Cancer (Re-Release)

We kick off Between Two Beers in 2025 by re-releasing one of our favourite episodes of 2024 - with Mark Stafford.

This ep is really special. There's just so much goodness in here.

Staffy is a radio host, who is best known as the former face of the TAB, where he spent two decades as a bookmaker and broadcaster.

But what's not so well-known is his roller-coaster ride through life with all its twists and turns.

In this episode we talk about how he died in a car accident, before being brought back to life, beating cancer, getting diagnosed with MS and found his way to the TAB. He shares his best match-fixing stories, we talk about the legend of Steel Balls and all the most incredible yarns from being NZ's premier oddsmaker.

We also talk about the devastating year of 2020, where he lost his job, his sister and his best friend in a short period of time. How he built himself back up, the friendships and lessons he leaned on and his reflections towards the end of this one - make it one of the greats.

Staffy is such a lovely bloke, who's been through it all. He was incredibly candid and raw in this chat, and when you mix that up with being one of the best storytellers in NZ, made it one of our favs.

We're also super stoked to have Staffy on the books of B2B Speakers, so if you’d like him to MC your night, or share his story at your function or event, flick us a message by going to www.b2bspeakers.co.nz.

Also check out our epic lineup of former guests available for hire too. And while there sign up to our weekly newsletter with all the biggest news from us and the podcasting space in NZ.

Emma Twigg Reflects on Olympic Career, Questions Retirement & Reveals Her New Sport

Emma Twigg is one of New Zealand's greatest rowers and won Olympic gold in Tokyo and Olympic silver in Paris.

This is Emma's second appearance on Between Two Beers and life has changed a lot since we recorded with her at her Cambridge home back in 2020.

In this episode we talk about her emotional Olympic triumphs, her health scare leading into Paris, motherhood, athlete well-being, elite sport and what her future holds.

This was a really fun chat – with one of New Zealand's greatest Olympians. Seamus and I have felt both personally invested and proud of Emma's career since we connected four years ago – and it was so cool to sit with her, celebrate with her, chat through all the highs and lows and share a bunch of laughs.

In short, Emma is such a legend.

We're also proud to have Emma on the books of B2B Speakers, so if you'd like her to share her story  at your function or event, flick us a message by going to B2Bspeakers.co.nz
