Jalynn was aware that the medical system was dangerous for her, as a woman, and a black mother. Thankfully, her first birth was fairly straight forward. She left the birth center clear that she would not go back, not because it was traumatic, but because it simply wasn’t worth leaving her house for. 

With her second, Jalynn stepped into full responsibility with a wild pregnancy and the freebirth of her dreams surrounded by sisterhood and support in a community ashram. She fully actualized her dream birth. 

We’re talking about an epic birth space decorated by a dear sister, friends chanting and vocalizing with her during birth, live flute music, and plants infused with affirmations by Toni Jones herself. It was no fear, all flow, with Jalynn completely centered and held by her community, which transitioned into a brilliantly supported postpartum as well.

Jaylnn goes on to fully integrate this huge uplevel and leave nursing school to pursue a truly holistic path, which is unfolding and gaining power as she does the work to shine her light and show women the way out of the system and into sovereign birth-work.

We have a really inspiring episode today, as I welcome Zainab, from Saudi Arabia, now living in Michigan. Zainab is a brilliant maiden who has blazed a path of autonomy, teaching Fertility Awareness Method and body literacy to Arab women in her mother tongue of Arabic.

Zainab grew up without initiation into her first bleed, and didn’t even have a word to use for her vagina. She experienced intergenerational shame.

Her awakening began when she discovered FAM along with a calling to share this knowledge with her sisters, particularly those in her home country, where she found women hungry to tune into their bodies and claim their freedom.

Zainab came to Matriarch Rising Festival and experienced it as a touchpoint of what's possible when women in their power come together. This may be the most important episode of the season, so I’m glad you’re tuning in this week. Today’s story is from Mina, a freebirthing mother, and RBK graduate in Serbia.

Though Mina dreamt of birthing at home, she knew of no other women around her making that choice, so she birthed her first two babies in a very old school, very dark hospital. Mina faced obstetric violence and abuse and did not want to return.

And so she didn’t. She freebirthed her third. When she found herself pregnant as a newly single mother, Mina of course chose freebirth again, for her breech baby, born at 44 weeks surrounded by her sweet children.

Mina credits The Radical Birth Keeper School for her deep understanding of sisterhood, through which she has cultivated a blossoming community of women in her country also creating change. These women are choosing sovereign birth; they are stepping out of the system and into their full power, just as Mina did.

Obviously Mina’s choice to freebirth is huge, but I was struck by the real ripple effect that happens after a woman freebirths in her community, and then devotes herself to sovereign birth-work. Mina is truly changing birth culture in Serbia, and it’s a really, really big deal.

Today on the show we have Savannah, a graduate of The Radical Birth Keeper School, and she’s here to tell her big and important story of birth, single motherhood, loss, and claiming her freedom as a woman.

Savannah’s first birth resulted in heartbreaking, but so common, midwifery sabotage and betrayal, with a totally unnecessary transfer to the hospital. Many years later, Savannah re-partners, and finds herself pregnant again. Tragically, she lost that baby on her 40 week date. Savannah tells us the gutting story of birthing her stillborn son in the hospital. She shares how in her mourning, she was guided to this very podcast, and then to our Radical Birth Keeper School, where she found deep healing and support.

In navigating her first birth outside the system and contending with fear, Savannah steps fully into her power and freebirths her next baby, just 11 months after the loss of her last baby.

Today I am joined by Arie, a Radical Birth Keeper School Grad who freebirthed her first baby after the school, supported by her partner and mother. Since RBK doors are open right now, we gotta highlight these epic women who experienced major transformation during and after the program! 

When Arie got pregnant she knew she would stay home. She didn't want to hire a professional, and *did* deeply want to have her mom there, despite the fact that they weren't on speaking terms. Arie consciously took steps to repair their relationship. In the end, her mother held perfect space, so much healing took place, and Arie freebirths a perfect little boy.

RBK Grad, and a brave, brilliant woman, Amelia is on the show today to share her big stories. Amelia has moved the needle bigtime in her life, from being initiated into motherhood with two entirely unnecessary, traumatic c-sections, to moving beyond the medical paradigm entirely, in her subsequent births. It’s a painful story, full of trauma, medical midwifery betrayal, a desired VBAC turned repeat surgery, and then, Amelia has a spontaneous undisturbed early birth, a miscarriage, completed at home. This is when she realized the stories she was told were lies, and that she was in fact, entirely whole, and capable of birth. Amelia stepped into who she really was, and chose freebirth, and chose herself.

Today on the show, I am welcoming Nina, a graduate of The Radical Birth Keeper School. Nina lives out in northern california, and was transferred to the hospital in her first pregnancy after a planned home birth with a midwife, because her blood pressure was higher than what the midwives were willing to support. She was induced and kept in the hospital for days on end, and was imprinted with the story that she was broken and could not birth naturally. 

Nina tells the beautiful story of her intentionally re-writing her internal stories throughout her second pregnancy, leaning more and more into trust, self-discovery, and intuition, as she prepares for her sovereign birth at home. Her freebirth story is a simple, inspiring example of how easefully birth works when we don’t complicate it, and when we do the real work of really learning to trust ourselves. This is the work that choosing sovereignty primes us for, and what Nina showcases in her powerful growth. She also shares about her amazing postpartum, and how being initiated into this redemptive birth showed her that she really can do anything - that she is the catalyst for her own power. 

Here’s what you’ll hear in Nina’s story:

✨️Nina planned a home birth with her first because her mother and community all home birthed

✨️Up until 8 months pregnant, there were no signs of complications, and then the high blood pressure readings began

✨️Her midwife transferred her over the phone, and Nina got put into the induction pipeline, birthing her baby 12 hours later

✨️She was kept in the hospital for 4 days until her dizziness and blood pressure dropped, never once being offered blood pressure medication

✨️It took years for her to heal from the trauma and internalized messages of being broken and faulty

✨️How the RBK School blew her mind open, and she learned that women can do whatever they want in pregnancy and birth!

✨️How she got pregnant again and decided to have a wild pregnancy, but still monitors her blood pressure

✨️How self monitoring was so stress-inducing that she decided to stop, and just fully trust her body and intuition

✨️How her son was born at home, and how sweet and healing her postpartum time was

✨️How Nina’s blood pressure readings remained “high” throughout pregnancy, birth, and postpartum, but she feels vital and healthy

✨️How Nina knows her body is wise and that her two perfect children are proof of it!

Marion joins me on the show today to share her sweet undisturbed birthing stories of her three children. Each of her stories is incredibly unique, and a beautiful example of where intuition can guide a woman when she refuses to be influenced by the industrial obstetrics complex. Marion birthed her first baby, who was transverse until the very end, completely outside of the system in an 1800s cabin in the woods, with an unexpected and beautifully sweet new friend supporting her in birth. Marion’s second birth took place in a teepee outside of the schoolbus she was living in, with women from her community singing to her from outside in the rain, with just her partner and son to witness. Her most recent birth is a powerful story of passionate love and how being with a partner that you are in true, genuine union with can deeply change the experience of birth. Marion is a trailblazer of her own life, following her own compass in every step of the way - from choosing to skip birth certificates for her babies, taking one year to name her baby, and claiming radical responsibility in all circumstances of her life… It was such a joy to hear her perspective on the world through her birth stories. Here’s what you’ll hear in Marion’s story:

✨️How finding freebirth Facebook groups became her primary resource for research and support, and gave her the confidence she needed

✨️How her first baby was transverse until the very end, and how she knew he would turn during labor, and he did!

✨️How Marion’s friend came over to deliver a mattress and ended up staying for her entire labor, supporting her with encouraging words and singing medicine songs

✨️How she lived in a school bus during her 2nd pregnancy and her community put up a teepee for her to birth in, complete with a little bell she would ring if she needed something

✨️The sweet image of her pacing the birth teepee while in labor, being sung to by her community of women from outside, and the rain coming down

✨️How her third birth she was supported by a partner she was in love with and the uplevel this offered even though all her previous births were peaceful and undisturbed

✨️Her blissful postpartums that were fully supported by community, food, and love!

✨️How Marion has never put her children in diapers by practicing elimination communication and presence through attachment parenting

✨️How Marion didn’t get birth certificates for her first two children, but has since changed her mind and is now going through the process

✨️How she has taken 6 months up to a year to name each of her children, waiting for a name to drop in!

✨️How women can’t get out of the responsibility of their births regardless of where it happens, and who is in charge

Leading by Example with Radical Birth Keeper and Freebirther Jess Owens

Today, Radical Birth Keeper School graduate and sovereign birth attendant, Jess Owens, joins me on the show sharing her two birth stories. Jess started her mothering journey with a seemingly acceptable midwife-attended homebirth in England, and although there were things that left a bad taste in her mouth, she felt lucky to birth at home without complications. After a few international moves, and learning more about physiological birth, she and her family moved to Canada and Jess began attending births outside of the system. Jess became pregnant again, and enrolled in the RBK school, all while building community and a flourishing birthkeeping business, entirely by word of mouth. She goes on to birth her son in total power, as did so many other women from her cohort! Jess offers a beautiful story of trust and the incredible ripple effect that taking birth back into the hands of women creates.

Here’s what you’ll hear in Jess’s story:

✨️How during her first pregnancy, she never met her assigned midwife, but instead a different person for every single appointment.

✨️How at 6 months pregnant she decided to have a homebirth, hired a doula, thinking that this was the most holistic plan available to her.

✨️How the medical midwives who showed up at her home were complete strangers she’d never met before.

✨️How she was forced into vaginal exams, pressured and annoyed by the midwives, and how she wanted to just swat them away.

✨️How her views on motherhood and birth begin to shift as she heard the call to work with birthing women outside the system.

✨️How she and her family move back to Canada and she was offered an opportunity to be a backup for a local woman attending sovereign births.

✨️How she attended her first birth outside of the system and then, through word of mouth, women just kept coming, and her community truly called her into this work.

✨️How she continued to attend births while pregnant with her son, and the easy wild pregnancy she experienced.

✨️Her debate between getting an ultrasound or not, and what she resolved to do.

✨️The simple and sweet freebirth story of her son, free of annoyance or external pressure.
