Spud Fit Podcast

Andrew Taylor

In 2016 I overcame food addiction, depression and lost 53kg (117lbs) by eating only potatoes for the year. The Spud Fit Podcast is all about continued self improvement through talking with others who do things differently and push the envelope. Theme music by my wife, Mandy van Zanen.

Dr Malcolm Mackay on practicing lifestyle medicine, fitness and supervising me!
When I first told Mandy of my plans for The Spud Fit Challenge she was very supportive, with one condition. I would have to get medical supervision through out the year, just to be on the safe side. In some ways I'm a typical bloke so of course I had no plans to consult a doctor but as we all know, happy wife = happy life! I though that eating spuds only for an entire might be too far outside the mainstream for most doctors so I decided to look up a plant based doctor who might at least be familiar with the work of Dr John McDougall. I knew of Dr Malcolm Mackay because in my research I had read through the website he created with his wife Jenny Cameron. I really liked what I'd read so it was an easy decision that he should be the bloke to help me through. Little did either of us know just how big this would become! Mat Grils lives outside the comfort zone.
A few months ago a rather hard core dude called Matt Girls came across my radar somehow and we chatted a little via emails. Perhaps there was something about my "extreme" Spud Fit Challenge that interested him, after all he is a pretty extreme dude himself! He told me he was coming to Melbourne to do this ridiculous race called the Down Under 135 - 135miles (217kms) of continuous running through the Lerderderg Gorge with around 9000m of elevation gain and decent. I told my wife he was coming and asked if she thought it would be too forward of me to ask if I could crew for him. I hardly knew him after all and had only ever talked to him via messages, surely I should get to know him a little better before I ask to tag along on one of his crazy challenges?! Mandy encouraged me to ask and see what happens. When I got home I opened up my computer to message him and found that he'd already written to me... to ask me to crew for him! A few days later we met in a small, gravel car park at the edge of Bacchus Marsh, around half an hour before the start of the race. Doug Lisle: self esteem, success and evolutionary psychology.
Early last year I made a youtube video called my argument against moderation. I received a lot of great feedback from this video, including a number of people recommending I read The Pleasure Trap by Doug Lisle and Alan Goldhammer. Of course I turned straight to chapter 14 and started reading about The Myths of Moderation and this is still my favourite chapter I've ever read. It really helped me to know that some genuine experts in diet and psychology were also thinking along similar lines to me and that perhaps I wasn't just some crazy nut job after all! Alan Goldhammer: Water fasting, diet and wholistic health.
While in Santa Rosa I was lucky enough to be able to visit True North Health Centre a couple of times. When I walked in the doors I felt instantly at home. It was such a nice feeling to be surrounded by people who were dedicating themselves to good health and wellbeing, a really positive, loving and caring environment. The founder of True North, Dr Alan Goldhammer was very kind to take some time out of his day to sit down with me for this conversation.
