  • Fiber Talk with Isabella Rosner

Isabella Rosner’s new book, “Stitching Freedom: Embroidery & IncarcerationAn embroidered nutmeg, from the Witney Antiques collection.Isabella Rosner is one of those rare people who sets a course where no course exists and, with persistence and hard work, reaches her goals. In this week’s conversation, sponsored by the Embroiderers’ Guild of America and Sassy Jacks Stitchery, we learn how Isabella’s love of textile arts drove her all the way to earning a PhD from King’s College of London. Her thesis was “Women Professing Godliness with Good Works: British and American Quaker Women’s Art before Ackworth and Westtown, 1650-1800.” She is now a curator at the Royal School of Needlework, charged with digitizing the massive RSN collection (learn about that project in our March 2, 2024 show and visit the RSN website to enjoy the first 100 pieces from the collection), and Research Associate at Witney Antiques. In addition to that work, she has written a new book, “Stitching Freedom: Embroidery and Incarceration,” available at the RSN website, and is the host of the Sew What? podcast, a periodic show that will provide you with extensive information about textile arts. Folks who love textile arts and the history behind them would do well to closely follow Isabella’s work as we’ve only just begun to learn from this talented lady.–Gary

  • RSN: Needlework for the Coronation

The anointing screen, created by the Royal School of Needlework for the Coronation of King Charles III. Yui Mok, PA Images, Alamo Stock PhotoA team of embroiderers works on the Queen’s robe, designed and created by the RSN. Photo: Royal School of NeedleworkThis week we visit with Gemma Murray, Anne Butcher, and Dr. Susan Kay-Williams of the Royal School of Needlework. These ladies were responsible for managing all of the needlework that was done for the Coronation of King Charles III a year ago. In our conversation, we learn about the various aspects of the work that was done at the RSN from restoration to creation of new pieces. This week’s show was recorded as a video so we could show photos of the embroidery as we talked about the pieces. That video is available below and on the Fiber Talk YouTube page. Also on this page is a slide show of the images we discussed, in the order in which they were presented. We hope you enjoy this look at the work that was involved in preparing embroidered pieces for the historic Coronation. If you want to buy the book, “An Unbroken Thread,” by Dr. Susan Kay-Williams, that includes the chapter on the RSN’s Coronation work, you can find sources at accartbooks.com.–Beth and Gary

  • Fiber Talk with Sian Fish
Midnight Whispers design by Sian Fish. The Dead Unicorn Society design by Sian Fish.

Blackwork is our topic this week and our guest is Sian Fish of The Urban Stitches. The show is sponsored by the Embroiderers’ Guild of America and Sassy Jacks Stitchery. Sian Fish is a self-taught stitcher and designer who loves to work in the macabre/gothic world of needlework design. But not all of her topics are focused on the “dark side.” She has a unique talent for putting a different twist on “regular” topics. No matter what the subject is, it’s almost alway worked on black or gray ground with black threads. She also does amazing work creating portraits with blackwork and regularly conducts popular SALs. Her work is quite unique in not only the world of blackwork, but in needlework design in general. After you enjoy our conversation, visit her website to learn more and consider participating in her SALs. They’re approachable for stitchers of all levels and will give you a chance to try blackwork.–Gary

  • Fiber Talk with Lita O’Hara

Design by Lita O’Hara.Ornaments by Lita O’Hara.Lita O’Hara, the Nashville Needlepointer and Patron Saint of Chaos, is our guest this week. Lita is a self-taught painted-canvas designer and project finisher. In our conversation we learn about her design process, what it was like to paint those first canvases, and how her finishing business evolved. To keep sanity in her life and to be able to deliver quality product, she keeps her customer list to a limited number. That allows her to get to know what they like and prevents late nights trying to meet holiday deadlines. Throughout the conversation, we offer several tips that will help stitchers produce projects that will result in easier and better finishing. Lita also holds finishing classes regularly and her Instagram and YouTube accounts are good sources for finishing tips and techniques. Mixed in are several entertaining videos. If you’ve never made cord, she has an excellent YouTube video that will show you how.–Beth and Gary

  • Fiber Talk Midweek Chat, 4-10-24
Elizabethan Treasures from Linda Barry, considered by Jean to be one of the best whitework samplers ever published.

It’s Midweek Chat week and Beth and Gary connected through our respective internet providers to talk about eyeglasses and what we learned from Kelly Lea Teske, supporting Ukraine designer Ekaterina at stitchyprincess.etsy.com, selecting projects vs. being influenced by stitching friends, projects we have that need to be at the top of the pile, stitching in groups vs. alone, whether we could produce an exhibition with our finished pieces, stitching lights/magnifiers, group projects, choosing silk or metallic threads, and whether we would rather have talent or determination. Sunday’s guest is the Nashville Needlepointed, Lita O’Hara.–Beth and Gary

  • Fiber Talk with Kelly Lea Teske

Kelly Lea Teske with needle, thread, and her favorite stitching glasses. It’s hard to stitch if you can’t see well and, for most of us, seeing well requires a good pair of glasses. This week, in a show sponsored by CyberPointers, Kelly Lea Teske returns to help us better understand how to make the most of our next visit to the eye doctor and the optician. Kelly first joined us in a Sept. 2, 2023 show we did with Rinda Just. The topic of that show was macular degeneration and other vision issues. This time, we learn that, as is so often the case, a successful visit starts with communicating what you want to achieve when you make your appointment and when you meet with the technician for those initial examination steps. If you make it clear you want glasses for stitching, by the time you get to the eye doctor, he/she will be able to write a prescription that will allow the optician to order the lenses you need. The goal of this show is to provide you with the information so you can ask intelligent questions when you visit the eye doctor. Ultimately, the advice comes from your doctor and optician and the decisions are yours to make. Below is a slide show of the images Kelly mentioned in our conversation. We hope this show helps you purchase glasses that enhance your stitching experience.–Beth and Gary

She creates top-flight cross stitch designs, reproduces intriguing antique samplers, designs original samplers, and has started designing punch-needle art. This week’s Fiber Talk guest is Robin Mayer of Little Robin Designs.  In addition to learning about her design approach, how she became addicted to samplers, and her preference for the primitive design style, we get some thread-storage ideas that might help all of us and will definitely help those whose needlework acquisitions have moved from stash to inventory. Robin also talks about her 2024 Nashville Market designs and her plans to deliver new designs throughout the year.
