The Messenger of God (peace and blessings upon him) said, “When one of you visits your brother when he is sick, from the first step that you enter upon them, you are immersed in mercy, to the point that when you sit with that person, you are completely enveloped in God’s Mercy.” It’s natural to feel down when a loved one is injured or ill. Khawwat ibn Jubayr, a companion of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings upon him), once came across a group of women who he took an interest in. If you came face to face with someone who was secretly trying to kill you, what would you do? Would you act like you didn't know? Would show them some hostility? Would you threaten them? Those would all be reasonable ways to deal with someone who intends to take your life. But that's not what the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings upon him) did when a bedouin man followed him around the Holy Mosque waiting for an opportunity to kill him.

In the final years of the Prophet Muhammad's (peace and blessings upon him) life, he conquered the city of his birth, Mecca. If you look at the actions of most conquerors throughout history, you'll find anything but mercy. Conquerors are typically quick to exert their power over the conquered people as a display of authority. But that's not what happened when the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings upon him) conquered Mecca. Despite the fact that he was driven out of the city just years prior, the repeated acts of aggression initiated by the Meccans after the Muslims had fled to Madina, and the violation of their peace treaty by the Meccans — the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings upon him) dealt with the people of Mecca with nothing but mercy, compassion and gentleness.
