#150 Training your brain with affirmations

Affirmations are a popular tool to use with gymnasts to help them overcome fear and mental blocks, decrease performance anxiety and help in their mindset training.

Used in conjunction with our other mindset tools, they can be very helpful in focusing your gymnasts brain on believing something positive about themselves.

But used incorrectly, and they can deepen the fear or disbelief.

Coach Ali and Coach Stacie talk thought affirmations, when they are helpful and how to use them to help your gymnast in this weeks episode.

    #149 Visualizing Your Future Self

How can you help your gymnast overcome fear or a mental block with mindset training

Visualizing their future self is a powerful tool.

It's also a powerful tool for you as a coach or to use with your whole team.

When you tap into the imagination and visualize yourself as the person or the team who has already accomplished their dreams, the brain can begin to use that to help you actually accomplish it.

    Gymnastics is a mental sport.

    #146 Equal Airtime

Equal Airtime: Your brain naturally looks for anything that could be considered a problem. It does this as a protective mechanism. When you notice yourself focusing on negative options, we want to encourage you to spend just as much time opening up to the other side of the story. It’s possible that there is no problem, that everything is going to work for us better than we could imagine, that we might actually stick that routine or win that medal. It’s possible either side could occur. Give yourself time and space to really open up to positive options without condemning the negative ones.  If you find your athletes dropping into a lot of negative self-talk, then we can help.

    #145 Interview with Wayne Wright

Interview With Wayne Wright.  Today we had the privilege of interviewing Wayne Wright, former San Jose State University Head Coach for the women's gymnastics team. Currently, Wayne works for the 49ers education-community based programs and consults with No Cap Sports.

We discussed some of the fears of coaching in today's culture.

Coaching today becomes a balance of acknowledging the pressure to help a team win, succeed, becoming a coach that doesn't feel that their past will be judged at any given moment with the possibility of losing their job, or wondering if they are meeting the expectations of the parents. Coaching 20 years ago was different than it is today-- and there is a lot to discuss around this topic! We are so grateful Wayne Wright opened up about the nuances of the coaching world today.

If you are a coach who feels confused and hesitant to coach athletes due to all the current situations and "safe sport" regulations, we are here for you. We hear you!

Join our movement to empower coaches with tools that allow you to coach the way you've always wanted to!
