#610 - Katie Arnold: The Return of a Running and Writing Legend

Katie Arnold is back on the podcast and I couldn't be more excited!!!

Katie was first on the show in 2019 when we talked about her amazing book Running Home.

In this episode, Katie returns to talk about her new book that is out this week, Brief Flashings in the Phenomenal World. It’s about many things—love, friendship, running, mountains, rivers—and how to how to apply timeless Zen teachings to running/endurance.

Much like Running Home, Brief Flashings is not a prescriptive, how-to book but a rather personal narrative that includes wisdom and offerings that can be applied to running and life. Katie uses anecdotes from her own experiences - suffering and recovering from a devastating wilderness accident, healing, and going on to win Leadville 100 - to illustrate your unlimited potential (and resulting happiness) when you run with the mind of Zen.

This is not an overtly Zen proselytizing book. You can apply these teachings even if you’re not religious (Katie's not), no matter what your spiritual tradition or where you are in the pack. Like Running Home, it goes way beyond running.

You can buy Katie's new book here: www.amazon.com/dp/1952692695?ref_=cm_sw_r_cp_ud_dp_G3DABZR2ZPA7AG39TH16.

#607 - Ron Romano: The Happiest Marathoner

Ron Romano may be the happiest guy in running. Not only that, he’s worked hard to become one heck of a runner. He’s run 50+ marathons (with a PR of 2:40) and is a veritable wealth of knowledge on all things running. After taking a nine year break from racing he roared back with abandon and became an elite masters runner. He has also become a staple at World Marathon Majors and has a wealth of information on how to approach these races to have the best experience, running and otherwise, possible.

#605 - Gary Koutsoubos: Losing 75 lbs. and Regaining His Running Life

From 20 to 40 years of age, Gary Koutsoubos gave up on running. The former high school and junior college runner had put that era of his life in the past. Instead, he opted for a sedentary lifestyle that left him overweight and unhealthy. After turning 40, Gary decided that enough was enough.

Now at 48 years old, Gary is one of the best 45-49 year old marathoners in the country. It is a remarkable turnaround and a story that continues to grow. Next month Gary will be running the Boston Marathon and aiming to break his 2:55 PR and possibly go under 2:50!

#603 - Sabrina Little: Why Good People Make Better Runners

Can running make me a more moral person? Can striving to be a better person make me a better runner?

In The Examined Run, philosopher and ultramarathon runner Sabrina Little asks whether running can be a laboratory for developing our character. She looks at the key ideas in virtue ethics--virtue, vice, exemplarism, moral emotions, and competition--and brings them into conversation with her experience in training and racing. Little pushes against the frequent conversations about ethics and sport that focus on the negative--doping and other forms of cheating or on simplistic expressions like “no pain, no gain.”

Sabrina argues that these ideas don't address the rich picture of how athletics inform a good life, and sport's relationship to acts of justice or courage. A good athlete is not just one who avoids cheating--rather, they perform feats of perseverance and courage, and succeed by working to develop their natural capacities. Little employs her own experiences in training, coaching, and racing in world class ultramarathons to reveal how athletics and virtue are deeply interconnected.

You can buy Sabrina's book on Amazon by clicking this link.

#602 - Kallup McCoy II: To the Edge of Death and Back

Today's podcast is with one of the most inspiring people I've even met. I first met Kallup McCoy II at the Olympic Marathon Trials in Orlando and was immediately taken by his energy and passion. Little did I know that there was much more to this man than the glowing first impressions suggested.

Starting at the age of 11, Kallup began his battle with drug addiction. What started as doctor prescribed cure for his migraine escalated during his teenage years in hard drugs. As Kallup entered his 20's, deep in the throws of addiction and with two children, his life continued to unravel. He overdosed six times, was brought back from edge of death on a few of those occasions, and was incarcerated. While in prison, Kallup laid the groundwork for the man he wanted to become and the shift was dramatic.

In this episode, Kallup shares his remarkable story that is one of the best turnarounds we've ever chronicled. Not only has Kallup been in recovery for the last seven years, his athletic achievements during that time boggle the mind. He is also committed to lifting up the lives of other Native Americans and members of Cherokee Nation who are battling addiction.

You can follow Kallup at www.instagram.com/_recoverylion86.
