    39: Gabby Malpas

Gabby Malpas, a New Zealand born artist living in Sydney is becoming very well known for her still life art. In this podcast episode, Felicity O’Connor chats with Gabby about licensing her artwork.

Gabby shares what her personal experience has been to cause her to license her art. She provides advice for artists on what they can do with their art work when it comes to selling their art.

    Felicity and Gabby talk through:

    • Licensing and how this equates to royalties.  Once an image of her art is sold, a percentage of this goes straight to her and Gabby explains how this percentage is worked out.
    • Copyrighting and how this is automatically in effect for all Australian artists
    • The importance of having legal agreements in writing always!
    • What comes around goes around.  Gabby’s belief that you should be supporting your fellow artists and why.
    • The definition of success for Gabby and why this isn’t about money or Instagram followers

    Art for Bales

Art Activator Andrea Hamann talks about Art for Bales, an initiative with Kate Pittas in support of Australia’s farmers suffering by the current drought situation.
    • Andrea is an artist and mum based in the Southern Highlands
    • Art for Bales started after speaking to a farmer about the recent drought situation and how difficult it is to feed their animals
    • The idea sparked when her friend and fellow artist Kate Pittas said that she would donate the sale price of a painting to buy a bale – and the painting sold instantly!
    • Art for Bales initially started with 10 artists and has now grown to over 200 artists through Instagram and raised over $54,000 in just 3 weekscleardot.gif

  • 37: Catherine Cassidy

I am such a fan of painter Catherine Cassidy and I am so excited that I had the opportunity to chat with her!
    • Growing up, Catherine was always drawing and painting, she remembers doing her art forever
    • In the end, self-doubt becomes your friend. If you don’t have it, you’re missing something. Good artists are not driven by confidence, they are driven by absolute excitement
    • Catherine can be a bit of a loner and this sometimes shows itself while looking at other people’s work
    • She does painting for fun and doesn’t want to take the fun out of it by doing art prizes. What she’s doing makes her free as a bird and doesn’t want it contained in any way
    • We also discussed her views about being a female artist in a male-dominated industry and some tips about juggling art and family

Podcast interview with emerging female artist Natalie Verriest

    • Her personal story told through her exhibition artwork
    • The realisation that her previous artworks were scared to be feminine and vulnerable

    • Bravery has always been seen as a masculine trait but she looks around and sees so many women who have shown courage and bravery and inspired her to put her art on the walls
    • She hopes people won’t underestimate the work that it takes to be an artist
