Anthony And Joey Stop by 2 days after Anthony's Arizona Strip Archery Mule Deer hunt to tell me the story of how it all went down.
Well we went all over the place on this one... not sure if we accomplished what I set out to with this one. But there are some takeaways so Im putting it up there.
I’m here with Mr. Phoenix Shooting Bags himself, Anthony Stallone. He’s prepping for an upcoming hunt that I’m unfortunately not attending, but he runs through his plans and what he’s got on deck. Anthony drew a strip tag for archery hunting deer in AZ, which is pretty much the golden goose. Then, we dive into the Cliff Notes version of my latest bear hunt.
Some pretty scary stuff happened on the hunt, including a frantic call my wife made to Anthony, and I recap it all here. I drew a tag in San Carlos and talked about the process and the tribal guide service I used for hunting on the reservation. There was something really eerie about the area, and we were super far from civilization.
Although it was stressful and challenging at times, the hunt was also full of a lot of cool experiences. We wrap up our conversation with a little chat about my gripes with social media and keyboard warriors. It’s always a few people who ruin it for everyone. I almost didn't post this episode because of the criticism I received but I realized that a lot gets lost in translation of a caption so maybe after a few people hear the story they will have a little more compassion for the situation. I felt terrible for my mistakes and is the main reason I put myself on blast when I posted about it. Either way I made the decision to share the episode. If you want an awesome bear recipe check out my latest blog post.

Talking Elk with the Western Huntsman with Jim Huntsman
Show Notes:
Jim Huntsman is the man behind the Western Huntsman Podcast. He’s a lifelong Western hunter, and his passion for the outdoors has taken him across multiple states in pursuit of everything from screaming bull elk to cutthroat trout on a fly rod. Jim is also dedicated to protecting the future of hunting and defending it against the fanatical anti-hunting community.
Jim grew up in Utah and joined the US Marines as a rifleman. There, he spent time stationed in North Carolina and served in Kosovo, Africa, and the Iraq War. After the Marines, Jim moved to North Idaho, where he met his wife, Nicole. Together, they have two daughters and are raising them on a 26-acre homestead.
Concerned for the future of hunting, Jim began writing for the hunting industry in 2016. In 2018, The Western Huntsman was started as a platform to write and share ideas with the sportsman community. On Christmas Eve of 2019, Jim launched the first podcast episode of The Western Huntsman and named his podcast studio after that season's bull... The Broken Tines Studio.
Here, Jim talks about what his ideal hunting trip looks like, which includes staying cozy in an RV. We then get into a little about wolf hunting and trapping and what the price of wolf hides goes for these days. We also chat about how trapping and hunting wolves keeps the elk population healthy, Jim’s go-to strategy for elk hunting, and more.

Mule Deer Recap with Dustin Wittwer
Show Notes:
Dustin Wittwer is the host of the Finding Backcountry Podcast . Dustin’s also quite the mule deer hunter and grew up chasing them around as a kid. On his podcast, Dustin’s interviewed a ton of qualified hunters, which has helped him put together a roadmap for bettering his own hunting skills. Although he goes after a few elk, sheep, and moose tags, mule deer is Dustin’s sweet spot.
Dustin shares how he approaches his whole mule deer season, starting from the beginning of the year. He looks forward to all the planning and scheming that goes into getting tags and scoring points, and maybe even likes it more than the actual hunting. Dustin starts planning early, and his advice is to identify exactly what you want to go after and try to stay as close to home as possible so you’re able to really understand an area and revisit it.
We get into the best times to kill a high-country mule deer as well as the worst. Dustin also shares his approach to hunting out of state, reverse scouting tips, and a few ways hunters can think outside the box for a more successful hunt.

Here, I sit down with Charles Whitwam, President of Howl for Wildlife, and we get into all of the latest happenings in the world of hunting advocacy. We kick things off by talking about a giveaway exclusively for Howl members. We’re giving away a fishing trip in Louisiana, offshore and inshore, with the MeatEater crew. If your membership is current as of August 10th, you’re automatically entered.
Charles and I talk about some of the ways the hunting industry shoots ourselves in the foot. With Howl, we don’t want to alienate anyone, and we partner with a ton of organizations, even if they’re competitors of each other. We’re all in this together, and it’s our philosophy to link up and become a stronger force. As long as you’re portraying hunting in a positive light, we want to work with you.
There’s so much bashing within the community, especially around big names and influencers, that it takes away from all the good that’s happening. Charles and I talk about Howl’s mission and how we want to get more people involved. We also chat about some of the anti-hunting legislation that’s bubbling up and what you can do to make a difference.
