MindShift Power Podcast is for teens, about teens, and anyone who works with teens. Many of the guests will be teens from all over the US and Canada. We will discuss issues that involve teens. Solutions start with conversations. Real conversations cannot happen unless we are honest. For this reason; guests will be able to speak their minds without the chains of extreme political correctness. This is something desperately needed in today's society. You will hear the real raw truths of where the minds of our youth are today. You will also hear from those who teach, work with; or create programs for youth of any kind. We will talk about the problems teens are dealing with but also discuss solutions. The main goal of this podcast is to bridge the large existing gap between teens and the adults who work with them. As adults, we try to create solutions for teens but, in order to be effective at it, we need to first listen to them and hear where they are. If you are a teen and want to know what other teens are really going through and thinking; this is for you. Perhaps you can come up with your own solutions just from listening. If you are an adult who works with teens and want to make what you are doing more effective; this is for you. If you are a parent who wants to understand the mind of the modern teen; to better help you deal with yours, this is for you.

What if the insecurities haunting you at 13 could still be controlling your life at 50? According to confidence coach Tamsin Broster, this isn't just possible—it's precisely what happens to countless women who never address their fundamental relationship with themselves.
Tamsin joins the MindShift Power Podcast to reveal the startling connection between teenage self-doubt and midlife crises. Drawing from her expertise working with perimenopausal women struggling with confidence, she offers a unique perspective on how young women can avoid this fate by building self-belief now.
The conversation delves into how beauty standards and diet culture—a multi-billion dollar industry targeting women—deliberately keeps us "preoccupied with other things that are not about challenging anything happening to us or around us." This systematic undermining of women's confidence crosses cultural boundaries, making it a universal issue affecting young women worldwide.
Both host Fatima and Tamsin share personal experiences about boundaries, advocating for yourself, and recognizing when your "inner critic" isn't actually your voice but rather internalized messaging from others. They offer practical strategies for building confidence when you lack support, including finding online communities and learning to "welcome yourself home" to your body—the only home you'll ever have.
This episode provides a roadmap for young women to avoid carrying insecurities into adulthood by starting the confidence-building journey today. As Tamsin powerfully notes, "Every single area of your life right now is being held back because of your lack of confidence." Don't miss this essential conversation about breaking generational cycles and reclaiming your power through self-belief.

In this powerful first installment of a special two-part series (Episode 82A), I break my silence about witnessing domestic violence as a child and the desperate measures my sisters and I contemplated at ages 12, 10, and 7. When my mother finally gathered the courage to escape her abusive boyfriend, we fled Minneapolis with nothing but backpacks—leaving behind our home, possessions, and everything familiar.
The physical escape was just the beginning of our journey. What followed were months of instability, makeshift accommodations, and psychological trauma that remained unspoken for years. This episode reveals the invisible wounds carried by children in violent households and the shocking lengths to which desperate children may go to protect their loved ones.
My story serves as both warning and hope—a wake-up call to those trapped in abusive relationships, especially when children are involved, and a testament that healing and healthy love are possible on the other side of trauma. Join us for Episode 82B, where a trauma therapist provides professional insight into the impacts and healing journey discussed in this deeply personal account.

It is important that you listen to the part 1 of this episode first: Running For Our Lives: The Murder I Designed Before I Could Drive - Episode #82A
In this illuminating conclusion to our two-part series (Episode 82B), trauma specialist Erica Bess expertly analyzes the psychological aftermath of childhood domestic violence exposure revealed in Fatima Bey's harrowing account.
"When your child hears you screaming in the other room, imagine the horror inside that they feel," explains Erica, revealing how children become co-survivors of abuse directed at their caregivers. This episode delves into the cascading traumas following the family's midnight escape—living in a hotel room, constant fear of discovery, and the development of adjustment disorder and PTSD that created hypervigilance lasting for decades.
Erica provides professional insight into one of the most chilling revelations from part one: the children's plan to eliminate their mother's abuser out of desperation. This powerful discussion illuminates how violence can perpetuate when children feel powerless to protect those they love.
Yet amidst this darkness emerges an inspiring transformation—how all three sisters channeled their trauma into healing professions. This episode offers profound understanding for survivors, parents concerned about household conflict's impact on children, and those supporting domestic violence survivors. Join us to explore trauma's enduring effects and the remarkable human capacity to transform pain into purpose.

Dr. Ed Daube, senior psychologist with 32 years of experience at the California Youth Authority, joins us for an eye-opening conversation about the true nature of emotions and how to master them. Drawing from decades of clinical expertise, Dr. Daube dismantles the common myth that emotions control us, revealing instead how we can strategically work with our emotional responses.
The emotions cycle begins with our brain's constant scanning for threats—a hardwired survival mechanism. When the amygdala perceives danger, it triggers physical responses before we're even consciously aware of feeling anything. But unlike our cave-dwelling ancestors who faced primarily physical dangers, most modern threats are psychological. This is where mastery becomes possible: by physically stepping back and taking a deep breath, we create space to assess whether the perceived threat is real before choosing our response.
Dr. Daube makes a fascinating distinction between anger's validity and justification. Our anger is always valid because it reflects our perception, but it may not be justified if based on misunderstanding. He explores the spectrum from mild annoyance to full rage, noting how our capacity for rational choice diminishes as intensity increases. Particularly illuminating is his research on women's anger, revealing how society often forces women to find indirect ways to express and address legitimate grievances without facing labels like "difficult" or "emotional."
For teenagers struggling with anger management, Dr. Daube offers practical wisdom: if your anger creates more problems than it solves, it's time to step back and examine what perceived threats are triggering your reactions. The key insight? Nothing outside ourselves "makes" us angry—our perception creates the emotional response, putting the power and responsibility for emotional mastery squarely in our hands.

Ever wondered how culture shapes our understanding of trauma? Join me, Fatima Bey, on the MindShift Power Podcast as Erica Bess, a licensed therapist specializing in trauma, and I explore this intriguing question. We unravel the complex relationship between cultural backgrounds and trauma, particularly in the lives of teenagers. Discover how the unique cultural landscapes within countries like the United States, Switzerland, and India influence perceptions of trauma. Through personal stories and historical contexts, we discuss the profound impact cultural heritage and generational trauma have on our worldview, offering a fresh perspective on the challenges teens face today.
We journey through time, touching on intergenerational trauma, from my African-American grandmother's experiences during the Jim Crow era to the lingering scars of the Bosnian War and Mao Zedong's China. Erica and I shine a light on how cultural contexts can amplify trauma, sometimes creating barriers to seeking help. By delving into microaggressions and the pervasive issue of misogyny, particularly in misogynistic societies, we aim to challenge societal norms and encourage a more compassionate understanding of these complex issues.
Our conversation takes a deeper dive into unpacking trauma responses and cultural mindsets, offering listeners a new lens to view human behavior. Erica brings her expertise to the table, helping us explore how what may seem irrational could be a trauma response within a particular cultural context. This episode is an invitation to rethink our judgments and embrace empathy, all while fostering discussions that could potentially transform young lives around the globe. Be sure to subscribe to stay engaged with these life-changing conversations.
