Flute Space is a platform made to share interesting stories related to life as a flutist and discover inspiring content in form of a podcast. We are 4 young professional flutists, coming from different countries and we want to create a space for flutists to get in touch with fellow flutists and find out about their professional lives. If you want to contact us, you can find us on Instagram '@theflutespace' or you can send us a mail '[email protected]'.
In our newest episode we spoke to flutist and author Ernestine Whitman about her new book "Countermelodies - a memoir in sonata form", in which she raises awareness for harassment, abuse and playing with power in the classical music scene through her very own personal story of being a young orchestra musician.
Meanwhile she is long retired after almost 30 year of being flute professor at Lawrance University in Appleton, Wisconsin - she therefore has also a lot of experience in giving advice to young musicians.
Go check out her brilliantly written book, where Ernestine offers a very personal insight in what can happen in the classical music scene next to all the glamour.
We read it - will you? 📚🤓

We had the loveliest talk with Kathryn Williams during her stay in Antwerp! Kathryn is not just flutist, but also composer and artistic researcher.
Her current project, Coming Up for Air, started in 2017 as a playful creative response to living with chronic respiratory conditions by inviting composers to write flute pieces limited to a single breath. The project now includes over 150 pieces and a new flute concerto based on the project will premiere with the Luxembourg Philharmonic on 21 November 2024 at Rainy Days Festival in Luxemburg!! Be sure to go listen if you are around
