What Came Next

Broken Cycle Media

What happens after the experiences of true crime survivors have been shared with the world? Does the media truly capture all it entails to survive such tragedy in the public eye? What comes after the convictions are in, the cameras stop rolling, and the court of public opinion has spoken? Can sharing our stories lead to justice, and is there ever really justice? These questions and many more are discussed on the new true crime docuseries podcast brought to you by Broken Cycle Media (https://www.brokencyclemedia.com/) . What Came Next (http://www.instagram.com/whatcamenext_podcast) is co-created and produced by Something Was Wrong (http://www.somethingwaswrong.com) ’s Tiffany Reese and host, award-winning writer, victim advocate and true crime survivor Amy B. Chesler (http://www.amybchesler.com) . On What Came Next (http://www.instagram.com/whatcamenext_podcast) , you’ll hear firsthand accounts from those impacted, with behind the scenes insights about what came next for survivors after their stories were shared with the world, and how the media impacts crime victims and their loved ones.

Content warning: gun violence, stalking, emotional, mental, and psychological abuse, violent threats, criminal threats, hate crimes, racism, antisemitism, transphobia, and homophobia.

As shared in part one and two of their story, J.E. Reich is a journalist, editor, survivor, and victim advocate. The three episodes also bring awareness to the related, horrific stalking J.E. and their family would be subjected to in the years following. However, at the time of the episodes’ release, J.E. and their family had received no justice for the unending harassment and death threats ‘The Caller’ executed over those years. The Broken Cycle Media team is extremely grateful J.E. was willing to return today to share more of their journey to seek justice, and about the start of their consequent healing process.

Content warning: child sexual assault, child rape, statutory rape, incest, sexual abuse, cultic abuse, religious abuse, narcissistic abuse, assault, physical, emotional, mental, and financial abuse.

Jessica Willis-Fisher is a singer-songwriter living in Nashville, Tennessee. Her childhood as the eldest of twelve siblings and member of a family band was marked by great tumult and abuse, despite spending several years in the public eye. 91: [Alison Jones-Lockwood] Start By Believing
Content warning: gender-based violence, abuse, domestic violence, intimate partner violence, and rape.

Alison Jones-Lockwood is a mother and victim advocate in Colorado. Her career in aiding survivors began years ago while she was in college, and continues to this day. Although her journey recently pivoted when she became Executive Director of the Rape Crisis Center for Northern Colorado, at the time of our recording she worked with EVAWI or End Violence Against Women International. The Broken Cycle Media team is grateful Alison was able to offer such a broad perspective of the advocacy arena, as well as a detailed account of what’s coming next for EVAWI, as the organization works to change the criminal justice and legal landscapes for victims. Although the importance of advocacy work is always relevant, this conversation is especially timely considering October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

87: [Jessie Buttafuoco] Protect the Legacy of Victims // Part 2
Content warning: substance abuse, substance use disorder, infidelity, serial infidelity, narcissistic abuse, assault, attempted murder, and gun violence.

As shared in part one of her story, Jessie Buttafuoco is a mental health professional, advocate, speaker, and co-victim of gun violence from Long Island, New York. Her journey in the media began at an incredibly young age, as the result of a vicious attack and attempt against her mother's life in 1992.  Shortly thereafter, pieces of Jessie's family story would be covered by what felt like every media outlet. However, Jessie's own experiences navigating the media, growing up in the public eye, and healing from prolonged trauma have gone largely unshared. Her goals in imparting more of what came next in her personal journey are to bring awareness to the impact and potential detriment of non-consensual media coverage, to offer support to other survivors, and to change the legislative landscape for future generations. The Broken Cycle Media team is incredibly grateful that Jessie was willing to share so much of her over 30-year journey within the true crime landscape with our audience today.
