Debating NASCAR's Playoffs with Steve Letarte

Denny Hamlin and his co-host Jared Allen are joined by NBC’s Steve Letarte to recap the NASCAR Championship weekend. Before getting to the races, Denny talks about blowing a lead in golf against Michael Jordan.

In the Xfinity Series, Justin Allgaier finally got the monkey off his back and won his first championship. But it wasn’t easy thanks to a crash in practice, a restart penalty, and a speeding penalty.

In the Cup Series, it was Joey Logano collecting his third championship. When it comes to the current Playoff format, the 22 team has written the book on how to succeed. The only car that could hang with Logano was his teammate Ryan Blaney, who ran out of laps to try and pass Logano.

Team Penske has won the last 3 championships and it has left HMS, JGR, and others wondering what they have to do to find speed at Phoenix.

The guys take a look at the current Playoff and discuss changes that could be made to make it better. Letarte gives out his ideal Playoff format.

Plus, what happened with the pace car on Sunday and NASCAR says goodbye to Martin Truex Jr. racing full-time. And, how did Denny get sued as a 11-year-old riding a bike?

"I Think They Made The Right Call"

Denny Hamlin dives deep into the controversy surrounding Martinsville with co-host Jared Allen. After 27 minutes of debating, NASCAR made the decision to remove Christopher Bell from the Championship 4, replacing him with William Byron. Denny agrees they ultimately made the right call.

But the drama didn't stop there—talk of race manipulation stirred up due to manufacturer alliances and the Playoff format. Denny breaks down the dynamics between JGR, 23XI, and the Chevy teams, exploring how alliances impact on-track decisions and contribute to tension in the Playoff structure. He also explains why banning point discussions over in-car audio won’t solve the issue, and shares his thoughts on how the current Playoff format hinders the rise of true superstars in the sport.

As for his own Playoff hopes, Denny reflects on coming up short this season but remains confident about future championship opportunities. Meanwhile, Ryan Blaney secured a dramatic walk-off win at Martinsville, earning his spot in the Championship 4 for the second year in a row.

Amidst all this, Goodyear’s new tires made their debut, and Denny gives his thumbs up on the performance improvements. To wrap things up, the guys preview their Championship 4 favorites and recap the intense weekend in the Truck and Xfinity Series races from Martinsville.

Logano’s Vegas Win: A Shocker for the Championship Chase?

Denny Hamlin and his co-host Jared Allen are back to recap an eventful Las Vegas event where Joey Logano secured a spot in the Championship 4 with a crucial win. They debate whether Logano's victory was a surprise and break down the Playoff implications (6:00).

Denny reflects on his own performance after a solid qualifying position of 4th turned into a challenging race day (12:00), and why the two-tire stop worked for Martin Truex Jr. but not for him (18:20).

What exactly happened on Denny’s pit stops and did him stopping short in the box cause their problems (22:10)?

Tyler Reddick went airborne after getting in a wreck with Chase Elliott and others. But, who was to blame for the wreck (24:15)?

Plus, they discuss Christopher Bell’s dominant 155 laps that didn’t lead to a win (30:30), and what it means for his Playoff chances. They also take a look at what each Playoff driver needs to do in the next two weeks to advance.

Joey Logano winning wasn’t good for Ryan Blaney, but Blaney still helped out his teammate at the end (38:20). Jared asks Denny what he would have done if he was in Blaney’s position. And, once again Logano won a fuel-saving race. Denny explains why the Fords are the best at fuel-saving strategies.

ROVAL: "We Made It; Sky's The Limit"

Denny Hamlin and Jared Allen react to the breaking news that Alex Bowman has been disqualified for his car failing to meet the minimum weight and won’t be advancing in the playoffs. The guys discuss how this could happen and the benefits of having a lighter car.

Kyle Larson won his second playoff race this year and once again in dominating fashion.

Things looked bad for Denny when Tyler Reddick hit him in stage 1. Just how worried was Denny that his chances of advancing could be gone? And, he explains what he was thinking as Kyle Busch put pressure on him at the end of the race.

Reddick put on a show at the end, coming from the back to avoid elimination.

The round of eight is a star-studded cast and Denny believes that’s what fans want to see. Jared puts Denny on the spot asking him to name the four drivers who will advance.

Track limits was a big topic going into Sunday’s race and apparently drivers weren’t 100% of the rule. And did NASCAR give William Byron a pass right after punishing Bubba Wallace?

On Saturday, Parker Kligerman thought he had a walk-off win but a last second caution ruined his plans. The call was the right call, but how they got to the call is something that needs to be looked at.

Denny Hamlin and co-host Jared Allen are back after an eventful race at Talladega. To decide the order of topics for the show, they brought out a wheel to spin and let it decide.

The first topic of the day is the lawsuit 23XI and Front Row Motorsports filed against NASCAR (5:20). Denny explains why 23XI couldn’t sign the charter agreement and the importance of why they are suing NASCAR.

They also discuss the 11-team's decision to take two tires while others took fuel only (19:00), and whether Ricky Stenhouse Jr. should’ve been ruled part of the crash due to damage (25:00). Plus, why were the rules on Brad Keselowski and Chris Buescher not enforced?

Next, they tackle teams being allowed to work on cars under a red flag, managing of DVP and cars being towed back had many people frustrated (32:25).

Bristol: Trying To Fix A Car Problem With Tires

Expectations were high for the NASCAR race at Bristol on Saturday, hoping for massive tire falloff but unfortunately, it didn’t happen. Denny Hamlin and his co-host Jared Allen discuss the reason. The guys chat about the imperfect science that goes into Goodyear making the tires. Plus, the real problem isn’t the tires, but instead the car.

Denny breaks down the lap times between Kyle Larson and Todd Gilliland. Another problem with the race was many drivers were satisfied with where they were running because their goal was to not wreck and advance.

Speeding penalties proved costly for Martin Truex Jr. and Ty Gibbs. The guys discuss how those penalties happened and how Denny was able to avoid having a speeding penalty.

Denny shares his thoughts on the four drivers who were eliminated from the Playoffs and discusses the drivers in a good position going into the next round.

They delve into Denny’s mindset when racing and how the ending of the 2010 season changed everything. Now that the first round is over, Denny sees this as a mental reset and said things are good with Lulu.

The only time Denny got worried on Saturday was a caution at the end of stage 2, but he was able to get valuable stage points.

Kyle Larson dominated the race and sits in first place and Denny thinks you can pencil him in to the Championship 4. They list the rest of the Playoff drivers and discuss how each person is probably feeling.

Off the track, Bubba Wallace signed a contract extension with 23XI. And, Corey LaJoie and Justin Haley are swapping rides.

Watkins Glen: The Most Carnage Yet & That Dog Has To Go

Connor Zilisch made his debut in the Xfinity Series a memorable one by winning at Watkins Glen. Denny Hamlin and co-host Jared Allen break down Connor's race and why he is a sure-fire thing in the Cup Series.

On the flipside, Denny’s race didn’t go so well on Sunday. On the first lap he was involved in a wreck and his day was almost over. Luckily the “A Team” crushed it and got him back out racing.

With bad luck once again, Denny's crew chief might be starting to believe Lulu the dog is the reason for the lack of results lately.

Lap 1 wasn’t the only wreck Denny was involved in. Later in the race he was in another wreck, this time with Brad Keselowski and Kyle Larson. Denny explains what happened and why this wreck wasn’t on him.

While the Playoffs haven’t been kind to Denny, Bristol is the next race and the 11 team will be on the offense the entire time. Plus, they discuss how many points he needs to advance.

Ryan Blaney was involved in the lap 1 wreck and wasn’t happy with NASCAR. But, Denny explains why what happened was the right call.

Everyone was expecting lots of tire falloff on Sunday but that’s not exactly what happened. The question is, why?

Chris Buescher and SVG had an amazing battle to win. Denny pulls up the SMT data to find out what the difference was.

NASCAR is headed back to Bristol. Will we see lots of tire wear like the last race at Bristol, or will the race be different?

Atlanta: Here's Why I Laid Back

With only 13 of 15 teams signing NASCAR's charter agreement, one notable holdout was 23XI. Co-host Jared Allen asks Denny Hamlin to weigh in on the situation.

On the track, it wasn’t a great day for Denny. Starting in 38th, the hope was for attrition but it didn’t come. It looked like Denny’s plan to avoid the big one was going to work and then a caution for debris on the track ruined that plan. Kyle Petty was critical of the plan to try and get 20 points and Denny responded with his reasoning behind it.

Denny and Jared discuss why there was little chaos on Sunday and if it being the first round of the Playoffs had anything to do with it. While Denny is firmly on the bubble, he is confident they can perform the next two races and advance.

Meanwhile, Kyle Larson and Chase Briscoe had their own Playoff struggles. Larson stays 15 points ahead of the cutline, but Briscoe may be in a must-win situation.

Denny only got 13 points on Sunday, but it could have been one less if not for BJ McLeod repaying Denny.

There are two more races left in the first round and Denny talks about how many points he thinks it will take to advance. One driver not worried anymore is Joey Logano, who won on Sunday and punched his ticket to the next round.

NASCAR is headed to Watkins Glen next weekend and 23XI has a third car racing with the return of Juan Pablo Montoya. Denny talks about what to expect from Montoya and why it might be harder for him than he thinks. Plus, why qualifying will be so important and what to expect with the tires.
