On today's Zero Limits Podcast I chat with Jamie Pennell New Zealand Special Air Service and author of Serviceman J: The Untold Story of an NZSAS Soldier
Jamie Pennell spent 22 years in the New Zealand Defence Force, with 18 years in the NZ SAS.
On 28 June 2011, a group of nine gunmen and suicide bombers attacked the Inter-Continental Hotel, Kabul. The attack and an ensuing five-hour siege left at least 21 people dead, including all nine attackers. Responsibility was claimed by the Taliban. Jamie's SAS patrol led the clearance of the hotel encountering many taliban fighters. Subsequently he was awarded New Zealand's second highest military honour by showing outstanding gallantry in the face of danger.
During his time in the SAS, he also fought alongside Willie Apiata and was there when his actions led to him being awarded his Victoria Cross.
After living the military Jamie’s decision to write a book was sparked by encouragement from peers and family, as well as a personal tragedy. The death of our comrade, Steve Askin, motivated James to share his story. He began writing a tribute for Steve’s family, which ultimately led him to expand his writing into a full book.

On today's Zero Limits Podcast I chat with James Hamilton-Bing 5 Rifles British Army and Founder of Blackbearing a veterans organisation promoting wellbeing and brotherhood
James joined the British Army at the age of 16 as an infantry soldier in the British Army’s largest infantry regiment The Rifles. During his service he deployed twice to Iraq with his second deployment in the role of intelligence and surveillance. After leaving the military and having the signs and symptoms of PTSD, this is where his life took a major turn leaning towards a life of violence and crime. During this time he got involved in 1% clubs, pornography, fighting, drugs, guns, charged with domestic violence and eventually spent a large portion of time in prison for kidnap. However after a life of crime and realising it was leading to either more prison or death he eventually hit a turning point in his life that led him to a more constructive path.
Black Bearing is a pioneering organisation dedicated to creating a safe, inclusive, and supportive environment for military veterans, helping them reconnect with a sense of belonging and camaraderie.
