Stay Off My Operating Table

Dr. Philip Ovadia

He was a morbidly obese heart surgeon. Through high school, college, med school and surgical training, he followed the U.S. dietary guidelines for both diet and exercise. Yet nothing he did could keep the weight off. Each day in the operating theater he would split open the chests of people just like himself. He was heading for the operating table and knew he had to find solutions that worked. In 2016, he finally found a way to lose 100 pounds and keep it off. Now - in addition to doing heart surgery - he helps people just like himself get healthy, lose the weight and keep it off. Dr. Philip Ovadia is now a rebel M.D. working to keep people OFF his operating table.

From Widowmaker to World Champ: Jeff Davis' Inspiring Journey #141

Jeff Davis survived a massive heart attack at 63 and went on to win four world wrestling titles in his late 60s by embracing a metabolic health approach through diet, exercise, reduced medication, and mindfulness.

"I believe we can reduce the whole cardiac industry if we can focus more on metabolic health, but there's not a lot of money in salads." - Jeff Davis

Jeff Davis, 63, survived a massive "widowmaker" heart attack thanks to a nearby medical facility. Determined to regain his health, he embarked on a transformative journey:

    1. Overhauling his diet
    2. Focusing on exercise
    3. Reducing medication reliance
    4. Embracing mindfulness

Jeff adopted a low-carb, high-fat diet rich in fresh produce and healthy proteins, cutting out sugar and processed foods. He gradually incorporated exercise, starting with short walks and progressing to intense training sessions.

Under his doctor's guidance, Jeff minimized his prescription drugs as his lifestyle habits improved. He also discovered the importance of prayer and meditation for mental resilience.

Remarkably, two years after his heart attack, Jeff returned to wrestling. At 65, he began competing and went on to win four world championships in his late 60s.

Today, Jeff inspires others to prioritize their health through social media, podcasts, and his upcoming YouTube channel, "Jeff Davis GLA" (Great Life Adventure). He hopes to motivate a million people to embrace healthier lifestyles and increase longevity.

Jeff's story reminds us that it's never too late to transform our health and live our best lives. By focusing on metabolic health, staying active, and cultivating a positive mindset, we can all work towards a brighter future.

Peter Ballerstedt on the Ruminant Revolution, Sustainable Food Production and Human Health #140

In this podcast, Peter Ballerstedt, a forage agronomist and ruminant nutritionist, challenges conventional wisdom about animal agriculture's role in human health and sustainable food production. He argues that ruminant animals, like cows, sheep, and goats, are crucial for converting inedible plant material into nutrient-dense food for humans while improving soil health and biodiversity.

Ballerstedt explains ruminants' unique digestive process, which allows them to thrive on a forage-only diet. Microorganisms in their rumen break down cellulose, converting it into fatty acids and microbial protein that the animal can absorb and use.

He believes current dietary guidelines promoting plant-based diets may be misguided, as populations consuming less than 30% of calories from animal-sourced foods face increased nutrient deficiencies. Animal foods provide essential nutrients in a highly bioavailable form.

Ballerstedt argues for increased animal-sourced food consumption across all populations to improve global health and address nutrient deficiencies. While acknowledging environmental concerns, he highlights the benefits of properly managed grazing on soil health, biodiversity, and carbon sequestration.

Looking ahead, Ballerstedt sees ruminant animal agriculture as a solution to nourishing a growing population while protecting the planet, envisioning a future where well-nourished individuals collaborate to solve global issues. His insights challenge listeners to reconsider assumptions about food production and recognize ruminants' vital role in creating a healthier, more sustainable future.

Robin Switzer, Mastermind of the Hack Your Health Conference #139

Like many people who reach their mid-40s, Robin Switzer was sick and tired of being sick and tired. She switched to a ketogenic diet, lost a lot of weight and felt more mental clarity. But that was just the beginning of her transformation; it sparked a complete revolution in her career and life.

At the time, Robin was a banking execute making very good money. But she wanted to do something more meaningful with the second half of her life, something that mattered more than helping bankers make more money. That decision led her into an extraordinary second act.

She initially got involved in the keto community through Ketocon. After a few years, she bought out the owners of the conference and rebranded the event to Hack Your Health.

As popular as the title "Keto" has become, she wanted the event's name to more accurately reflect its focus on health optimization and not just on the keto diet.

Robin shares with us the challenges she's faced to maintain the event's integrity. Turns out, plenty of companies are willing to throw money at the "keto market" even though their products are not remotely healthy.  (Whoda thunk it?)

She makes it a matter of personal responsibility to ensure that every company and presenter at the conference aligns with her mission to provide an authentic, health-focused forum for all who attend.

This episode let's you know what to expect if you're joining us in person or tuning in from afar. Robin's invitation to take action for your health today is not just a call to action; it's a beacon of hope for those ready to transform their lives. Don't miss this power-packed episode that might just be the nudge you need to embark on your own health journey.

From Gourmet Chef to Keto Crusader: Jonno Proudfoot Sparks Low-Carb Revolution in South Africa #138

They call the diet "Banting" in South Africa, in honor of the man who first proposed the ketogenic diet more than 100 years ago. Chef Jonno Proudfoot helped to popularize not just the term but the diet itself when he swam from Mozambique to Madagascar in the same year he released a Cook Book along with the legendary Tim Noakes. That confluence of circumstances spurred a nationwide movement towards a low-carb, high-fat lifestyle.

Proudfoot narrates his story with a dash of history, a pinch of socio-political context, and a sprinkle of media influence. Jonno provides practical tips for those attempting the delicate balance of promoting a healthy lifestyle without commercializing it.

It's a conversation rich with tales from the kitchen to the coastline.

Kevin Hines: The Man Who Survived a Suicide Attempt Off the Golden Gate Bridge #137

Have you ever stood at the edge of life, teetering between the will to live and the temptation to end it all? Kevin Hines faced this chilling reality when he leapt from the Golden Gate Bridge, only to embrace life fiercely during his fall.

In this astonishing conversation with Kevin, he describes the raw emotions and struggles with bipolar depression that brought him to the brink of death, the miraculous series of "coincidences" that saved him, and the extraordinary new life he has discovered on "the other side."

Through his own battles with nutrition and gut health, Kevin connects "mind" with "body" as he explains how our physical health affects our mental state, and vice versa.

Kevin says we each have a tale to tell, a personal narrative that can shake the world. His message is clear: life's value is immeasurable, and hope is a lifeline  we can extend to one another, one story, one moment, one outreach at a time.

X3 Inventor John Jaquish: a Revolutionary Approach to Bone Health & Muscle Growth #134

John Jaquish is a visionary biomedical engineer. His inventions are revolutionizing the way we think about muscle hypertrophy and disrupted the conventional beliefs about muscular strength and bone health.

He’s an outside the box thinker whose story demonstrates that unconventional thinking is not enough for success. You gotta have  determination and perseverance if you have any hope that your innovations will ever see the light of day.

From pursuing his PhD to developing osteogenic loading devices, he has confronted and overcome the skepticism of his colleagues, of academic gatekeepers and even fellow strength and conditioning experts.

His research into osteogenic loading led directly to the development of X3, an exercise system that overcomes the limitations inherent in traditional resistance training systems.

Sander Van Stee: The REAL Green Revolution is Regenerative Farming & Ranching #133

Imagine a world where the food on your table not only nourishes your family but also heals the earth. That's what Sander van Stee is working towards every single day.

Van Stee's knowledge of the relationship between soil health, animal welfare, and our food system is both deep and broad. One example: he finally helped us understand why grass-finished beef offers superior nutrition over less-expensive grain-finished beef.

From soil microbes to diversified crop planting, van Stee explains both how and why the popular narrative around cattle farming is dead wrong. He's leading an agricultural revolution that prioritizes planetary health without sacrificing productivity.

This episode is an eye-opener for anyone skeptical about the scalability of regenerative methods. Another example: regenerative farming has the power to revitalize even the most degraded lands.

His story is a call to action for consumers to use their purchasing power to support sustainable farming practices.

Regenerative agriculture is not just about growing crops—it's about sowing the seeds for a healthier future.
