McDavid & Myers Face Suspensions & The Best Fits for JT Miller

Jason Gregor and Frank Seravalli are back with a fresh episode of The DFO Rundown as they took a look back at everything that went down over the weekend in the NHL.

The big story is the end of the Oilers vs Canucks game on Saturday night as both Connor McDavid and Tyler Myers were ejected for cross-checks to the head of an opponent. Both now have hearings with the NHL DOPS, but should they be suspended the same number of games? The guys debated that and had a bigger picture conversation about the state of officiating in the league.

They then got into the John Klingberg signing. Gregor gave some insight into where he could slot into the lineup and they talked about whether or not Klingberg can find his game with the Oilers.

They then got into what’s been going down over in the Eastern Conference. The Devils and Bruins are both slipping with the New York Rangers starting to find their game. They talked about the recent hot streak for New York and dug into some of their concerns with what’s happening in New Jersey.

That led to some conversation about the Simon Nemec comments. He didn’t ask for a trade, but he wants to play in the NHL and the Devils have a loaded right-side of their blueline. Could something give there? Frank gave his thoughts.

They also talked about Kappo Kakko’s hot start to his Kraken career. The guys had a contentious debate a few weeks ago when the trade first went down so they revisited their conversation and their thoughts on the deal.

Tyler then popped in for a new edition of Fill in the Blank where he asked the guys about best fits for JT Miller, the playoff chances for the Montreal Canadiens, and whether or not Jeff Skinner will finish out the year in Edmonton.

They wrapped with some talk about potential injury replacements for the 4 Nations Faceoff with guys like Jason Robertson and Zach Hyman both shooting the lights out.

    1:10 - McDavid & Myers face hearings

14:40 - John Klingberg signs in Edmonton

    17:55 - Eastern playoff picture

20:50 - Concern in New Jersey?

    32:30 - Kakko & The Kraken

35:40 - Fill in the Blank (JT Miller, Habs playoff chances, Skinner in Edmonton)

    47:00 - 4 Nations Injury Replacements

The Deep Rooted Problems In Pittsburgh & The Blue Jackets Remarkable Run

Jason Gregor and Frank Seravalli are back with a fresh episode of The DFO Rundown as they went around the league and talked about some of the big stories that have developed over the last week.

They started things off by talking about the Pittsburgh Penguins' decision to place veteran goalie Tristan Jarry on waivers. He’s just a few years removed from signing a long-term extension with the club and while he hasn’t performed up to that contract this season, both Frank and Jason took issue with the Penguins using him as a scapegoat. That led to a bigger-picture conversation about what Dubas has done since taking over as General Manager.

From one of the worst stories in the league to one of the best, the guys then looked at the Columbus Blue Jackets, who are currently in a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. Kirill Marchenko and Zach Werenski have both been spectacular and the team is playing unreal hockey. Can they hold onto this playoff spot?

Tyler then popped in for a new edition of Buy or Sell where he asked the guys about where John Klingberg could potentially sign, the Chicago Blackhawks deadline plans, and whether or not Kyle Dubas will be around when the Penguins finally get back to the playoffs, whenever that might be.

To wrap things up, they talked about Connor Hellebuyck running away with the Vezina Trophy and how much pressure the Winnipeg Jets are facing this year to go on a deep playoff run.

    1:10 - Penguins waive Jarry

15:30 - Blue Jackets keep rolling

24:00 - Buy or Sell (Klingberg, Hawks deadline plans, Dubas’ future)

    42:10 - Hellebuyck & the Jets

    47:00 - Frustration in Toronto

Trade Deadline Matchmaker & Philly Welcomes Back Gauthier

Frank and Jason are back with a fresh episode of The DFO Rundown to go through everything that went down over the weekend around the NHL. To start off the show, they talked about Cutter Gauthier’s much-anticipated return to Philadelphia. The Flyers faithful treated him exactly how you’d expect them to and the players definitely wanted to get their shots in. Frank was in the building and gave his take on it.

They then talked about the Eastern playoff picture which is continuing to stay tight. It seems like every week there’s a new team stepping up and getting hot and right now, that team is the Detroit Red Wings. Jason gave his thoughts on how they’ve looked since making their coaching change. They also talked a bit about the Columbus Blue Jackets.

Tyler then popped in for a new edition of Buy or Sell where he asked the guys about the final playoff spot in the West, which spiralled into an interesting conversation about the future of the St. Louis Blues. He also got their take on the top teams in the Metro Division and the Sabres’ chances of moving two young stars before the deadline.

As the trade deadline continues to inch closer and closer and after Frank dropped his latest trade targets board last week, the guys decided to play a little deadline matchmaker and pick out a few good landing spots for Frank’s top targets.

1:20 - Philly welcomes back Gauthier

12:30 - The Red Wings heater & the Eastern playoffs

17:35 - Blue Jackets deadline plans

27:45 - Fill in the Blank

    41:00 - Canucks Deadline matchmaker

47:00 - Landing spots for the top targets

    1:01:00 - The Oilers & their blueline

Do the Boston Bruins need to take a big swing?

Jason and Frank are back with a fresh episode of the DFO Rundown as they began to sink their teeth into the trade with market. With the deadline now less than two months away, things are only going to continue heating up.

To start today’s pod, the guys talked about the Boston Bruins continued struggles. They’ve already made a coaching change this season, but do they need to find another way to shake things up? The guys debated that and it eventually led them to trying to figure out if the Bruins could find a way to get one Elias Pettersson or JT Miller from the Vancouver Canucks.

Frank has an all new version of his Trade Targets board that is headlined by Islanders forward Brock Nelson. They discussed some potential landing spots for him and some other names in Frank’s top 25, like Sabres centre Dylan Cozens.

Which teams will be buyers or sellers is still up in the air a little bit, but there are some very interesting teams around the league. One of them is the Washington Capitals, their first half of the season would lead you to believe that they should be all in, but would they be willing to disrupt the chemistry that their group currently has?

Tyler then popped in for a new edition of Buy or Sell where he asked the guys about the players on pace for 100-points, the Norris race, and what both the Rangers and Islanders could sell off at the deadline.

3:40 - Are the Bruins a playoff team?

14:40 - Are Boston & Vancouver good trade partners?

21:00 - What’s the market for Dylan Cozens?

24:30 - Nelson headlines trade targets board

31:20 - What could the Capitals do?

46:05 - Buy or Sell (Rangers, Islanders, Werenski, 100-pt players)

    Team USA Stays Golden

Frank and Jason are back with another episode of The DFO Rundown following a headline-filled weekend in the world of hockey.

To kick things off, they talked about the World Juniors where Team USA captured gold for the second straight year. It’s the first time that the USA has accomplished that feat, which led to some talk about how they’re becoming a dominant hockey nation. They also talked about Finland’s impressive run and what’s wrong with Hockey Canada.

They also raved about a few of the prospects that really showed out in the tournament, a handful of which are all property of the Washington Capitals.

From there, the guys talked about the Auston Matthews injury and how cautious the Leafs should be with their franchise player. The Anaheim Ducks have been making waves recently with their play on the ice and on Sunday, they signed Frank Vatrano to a pretty unique extension. While lots of people were applauding it, Frank had a bit of a different view.

Tyler then popped in for a new edition of Fill in the Blank where he asked about Leon Draisaitl’s Hart Trophy odds, the Canucks conundrum with their star players, and the Montreal Canadiens' recent heater.

To wrap up, Frank had a few more thoughts on Pettersson vs Miller and the guys talked about the Devils' recent struggles and the Golden Knights surge.

3:30 - USA wins the World Juniors

    21:00 - Matthews injury situation

26:15 - Ducks' recent run & the Vatrano extension

38:55 - Fill in the Blank (Canucks drama, Draisaitl for the Hart, Habs hot streak)

    57:54 - Pettersson vs Miller

59:40 - Devils struggle & Golden Knights run

The Red Wings Shake Things Up & Are The Rangers Dead?

After a brief holiday break, the boys are back with a fresh episode of The DFO Rundown and while the league was dormant for most of the last week, there was still plenty to get to today on the pod.

To kick things off, Jason and Frank talked about the Detroit Red Wings’ decision to make a coaching change. For the just the second time in franchise history, the team has made an in-season coaching change and the guys debated if the teams' struggles had anything to do with the coach or if there is a bigger problem with the way that the roster in constructed.

That led to some talk about the Eastern Conference playoff picture and the play of the Ottawa Senators. The Senators front office nailed some big moves this summer, some of which weren’t viewed very positively at the time, while the moves that the Red Wings have made just haven’t worked out.

Of course, the eight seed in the East is really only open because the New York Rangers continue to struggle. Should they be the next to make a coaching change? Jason and Frank debated that and then had a conversation about how much of the blame should lay at the feet of GM Chris Drury.

They then went out West and talked about the run that the Los Angeles Kings have been on. Should Jim Hiller be in the conversation for the Jack Adams? Why aren’t more people talking about the insane season that 37-year-old Anze Kopitar is putting together? There are plenty of intriguing storylines out in Hollywood.

Tyler then popped in for a new edition of Buy or Sell where he asked the guys about the who the best team in the East is, the Calder trophy odds, and Alex OVechkin’s chase of the all time goal record.

They then wrapped up with some talk about a few milestones that were hit over the weekend.

0:55 - Red Wings fire Lalonde

6:27 - The Eastern playoff picture

16:55 - Are the Rangers dead?

28:40 - The Kings recent run

    41:05 - Buy or Sell

    49:00 - Weekend Milestones

    What’s going on in Vancouver?

Jason Gregor and Frank Seravalli sat down for one last podcast before their Christmas Break and to kick things off, they talked about some of their favourite winter activities and Gregor tried to sell Frank on a few that he hasn’t tried yet like snowshoeing and going on a dog sled.

They then got into the big drama that’s happening with the Vancouver Canucks. The rift between JT Miller and Elias Pettersson has really caught the publics attention but Frank says that this is nothing new. Could it get to the point where the Canucks need to move on from one of the two players for the sake of their locker room? Frank gave his thoughts.

From there, they talked about some teams that are heading in totally different directions in the month of December. The Dallas Stars have been ice cold of late and while injuries have played a part, the guys discussed if there’s something off with the Stars this season. The Ottawa Senators are not looking like the Senators of old. They’ve found another gear and for the first time in a number of years, have avoided their dreaded mid-season slump.

They also talked about Matt Rempe getting an eight-game suspension for his hit over the weekend.

Tyler the popped in for Fill in the Blank which features some talk about Christmas shopping and then questions about Patrik Laine, the Buffalo Sabres, and the Utah Hockey club and their playoff chances.

5:25 - The drama in Vancouver

    12:15 - Dallas’ December Dip

    15:00 - Senators red-hot run

    20:35 - Rempe gets 8 games

26:55 - Fill in the Blank

    42:50 - Utah’s in the mix

Kakko goes to the Kraken & the Habs add Carrier

It was a wild evening in the NHL as three trades went down in the matter of a few hours. Frank and Jason broke it all down today on a new episode of The DFO Rundown.

They started with the deal that saw Alexandre Carrier go from the Nashville Predators to the Montreal Canadiens in exchange for Justin Barron. The guys talked about why the rebuilding Canadiens wanted to get an older, more expensive defenseman and whether or not Barron is a project worth taking on for the Preds.

They then got to the Kappo Kakko trade as the Rangers moved the former second overall pick to the Seattle Kraken in exchange for a package that includes defenseman Will Borgen. Gregor likes the move for Seattle and thinks that Kakko still has some upside. Frank thinks the upside is limited and thinks the Rangers did well in this deal.

They quickly touched on the small trade that the Pittsburgh Penguins made and then they talked a bit about the run that the Utah Hockey Club has been on. Are they capable of being a playoff team this year?

Tyler then popped in for another edition of Buy or Sell where he asked the guys about the teams that are currently leading their division, the Penguins run and whether or not we’ll see another trade before tonight’s roster freeze.

To wrap up the pod, they talked a little about Christmas plans, their youth hockey coaching experiences and they quickly touched on the Vancouver Canucks and their potential plans ahead of the roster freeze.

1:20 - Preds move Carrier to Montreal

    11:55 - Kraken add Kakko

22:30 - Joseph goes back to Pittsburgh

    25:05 - Utah’s on a run

    31:30 - Buy or Sell

52:15 - Current state of the Canucks

    New York State of Despair

To kick off a new edition of The DFO Rundown, Jason and Frank sunk their teeth into the latest surrounding the New York Rangers, who continue to struggle. GM Chris Drury tried to shake things up by trading Captain Jacob Trouba and it hasn’t sparked the team the way that they had hoped. Will someone pay for these struggles with their job? Or will the Rangers try to see this through with their current group? The guys debated it.

From there, they went to upstate New York and talked about the Sabres ten game losing streak. Is it time for a change at the top in Buffalo? Frank thinks it might be but also wasn’t willing to say that their season is over. Things aren’t working and that is a fact. The Sabres will need to change something soon.

They then went out west and talked about the comments that Vancouver Canucks Head Coach Rick Tocchet following the teams loss this weekend. Was Tocchet right to call out his team? The guys discussed it. Frank thinks the Canucks have an issue on their blueline and wondered if they should have been in on the Cam Fowler trade talks. That then led them to breakdown the deal that did happen between the Blues and Ducks.

Tyler then popped in for a new edition of Fill in the Blank where he asked them about the Ottawa Senators playoff chances, who the truly elite teams are in the West, and which team could be next to make a trade.

After that, they talked about the MVP race and a pair of teams in the Eastern Conference who are continuing to play well after strong starts to the season.

    1:05 - Rangers struggles continue

16:10 - Can the Sabres turn it around?

    25:05 - Tocchet’s post game comments

30:00 - Cam Fowler moves to St. Louis

34:30 - Fill in the Blank

    35:50 - The MVP Race

    54:00 - The Devils start

56:30 - The Capitals continued run

Is it time for big changes in Nashville?

Frank and Jason are back with a fresh episode of The DFO Rundown as they go around the league and touch on some of the bigger stories that are floating around.

To start the pod, they talked about the Vancouver Canucks, who welcomed back Thatcher Demko to the lineup and are expected to have JT Miller back by the end of the week. Could the Canucks start to gain some momentum now that they have some key pieces back?

One team that has not been gaining any sort of momentum is the Nashville Predators. They are still sitting at the bottom of the league after spending like drunken sailors over the summer. Frank speculated on whether or not a coaching change is needed while Gregor talked about how they need to just accept fate this year and take whatever draft pick they get.

They also quickly touched on Trevor Zegras’ knee injury before bringing in Tyler Yaremchuk for Buy or Sell where he got the guys take on a few of the major awards that appear to have clear front runners at the one-third mark of the season.

They wrapped things up by each giving their five true Stanley Cup contenders. The guys were pretty aligned with who they had but there were some interesting debates about the teams they omitted.

2:20 - Canucks get Miller & Demko back

    9:20 - Preds keep slipping

    23:00 - Ducks & Zegras

    24:00 - Buy or Sell

41:10 - Who are the Cup contenders?

What’s Next In The Big Apple?

Frank and Jason are back with a fresh edition of The DFO Rundown and to kick things off today, they discussed what went down on Friday with the New York Rangers as they made a pair of significant moves. First, they traded their Captain Jacob Trouba to the Anaheim Ducks and managed to get out of his entire contract then just a few hours later, they came to an agreement with franchise goalie Igor Shesterkin, which was the richest contract ever given to a goaltender.

With all things considered, was Friday a win for GM Chris Drury? Or is there now pressure to add? The guys discussed that and also talked about why the Ducks wanted to make this move.

The other piece of news from late last week was the third coaching change of the regular season. The Chicago Blackhawks fired Luke Richardson after just over two years behind their bench and replaced him with Anders Sorensen. That led to some talk about how the Blackhawks are handling their rebuild and whehter or not they’re on track in the Connor Bedard era.

Tyler then popped in for Fill in the Blank where he asked the guys a little bit more about the Ducks plans and also how much longer Blackhawks fans will have to wait until they’re finally watching their team back in the playoffs.

To wrap it up, Jason talked about the Eastern Conference playoff picture as things begin to tighten up. Can the Penguins actually stay in the hunt? Out West, Frank had some questions about the Dallas Stars.

    1:10 - Rangers trade Trouba

    11:40 - Shesterkin’s record extension

    21:50 - Blackhawks fire Richardson

33:20 - Fill in the Blank

    41:00 - Eastern playoff picture

    46:20 - Western playoff picture

1:02:10 - Board of Governors preview
