For this month, we want to know what your hobby hot take is! Email us at [email protected] or DM us on IG @fivecardguys. We'll give away a couple of Topps Now cards (Ohtani 50/50 and Messi/Curry Night Night) to two randomly selected people who gives us their hot take!
Clark and Hyung open the show talking about 2024 Topps Chrome Update baseball and whether it's the best baseball card set released this year (with its MLB Debut Patch rookie checklist plus Home Field Advantage on chromium stock for the first time ever.)
Then they move on to "Hobby Headlines" where they dive deep into the issue of the hobby becoming more and more expensive. Are breakers to blame? Will limiting the amount of breaking even fix the affordability problem or will it just cause other issues like making card stores financially unsustainable?
Next, the guys play Over/Under where Clark provides a list of four cards and Hyung guesses whether the last sold price is over or under the dollar amount Clark provides.
Lastly, they play their regular weekly scheduled game called "Pick 1" where they each put up two cards and then debate which one they'd rather invest in.

Clark and John open the show by talking about how the winning bidder of the case of 1979 O-Pee-Chee hockey cards didn't pay up. As such, the case is going back up on the auction block.
Then Clark welcomes back Ezra Levine, CEO of Mascot, which is an online platform that helps collectors sell and manage cards online. The tool could also change the way collectors attend card shows as well as help them sell their cards through their own storefront online.
Next, the guys play another round of "Blind Rankings" where John gives Clark a list of ASMR hobby-related items that many collectors find appealing (ie. ripping open a pack).
But each item is revealed only one at a time with Clark having to slot each item from 1 to 5 based on how much they like the item before the next item is known.
Lastly, they play their regular weekly scheduled game called "Pick 1" where they each put up two cards and then debate which one they'd rather invest in.

Clark, Hyung and John open the show by weighing in on the 2023-24 SP Authentic hockey card set and whether the chase for the long awaited Connor Bedard Future Watch Autograph cards is worth the price of the $400US hobby box.
Then they move on to "Hobby Headlines" where they discuss their strategy going to a large sports card show (ie. like the Sport Card Expo in Toronto this week) based on the current state of the hobby market?
More specifically, if they each had $1,000, how would they spend that money at the card show and why?
Next, the guys play a game called "Blind Rankings" where for this specific segment, Clark gives Hyung and John a list of hobby-related items that many collectors find appealing.
But each item is revealed only one at a time with Hyung and John having to slot each item from 1 to 5 based on how much they like the item (ie. Orange Refractor Autograph Card numbered to 25) before the next item is known.
Lastly, they play their regular weekly scheduled game called "Pick 1" where they each put up two cards and then debate which one they'd rather invest in.

EPISODE 248 - Clark, Hyung and John debrief on the World Series that just ended and discuss some card implications now that the season is over such as: Will Shohei card prices ever go down even in the offseason? Will Freddie Freeman and Mookie Betts finally get more hobby love with this championship title? Is Aaron Judge still worth investing in? How about other Yankees including Anthony Volpe and Jasson Dominguez for 2025?
Then Clark plays another joint podcast episode with Paul Hickey of the Sports Card Strategy Show where they talk about the right time in selling certain cards as well as debate on whether we should care at all about what popular hobby influencers post on their social media page?

Clark, Hyung and John are back together again for this episode and they open the show giving their quick thoughts on the $4.3 million Shohei Ohtani baseball sold on Goldin recently. Plus they discuss whether buying any Ohtani cards now is a good idea or if there will be a better buying opportunity in the future.
Then they move on to "Hobby Headlines" where they look over some key findings in the latest Top 50 graded athletes list by gemrate.com including the skyrocketing number of Victor Wembanyama cards being graded each month.
Plus they point out three new athletes in the recent Top 50 list which includes CJ Stroud, Jalen Hurts, and Kevin Durant.
Next, Clark introduces a new segment called "Rank It" where Hyung and John rank what they like the most to the least of five hobby-related items. The common theme for this particular game is things in the hobby that many collectors don't like (ie. oversized slabs, off-centered cards, triple autograph cards with one dud player.)
Lastly, they play their regular weekly scheduled game called "Pick 1" where they each put up two cards and then debate which one they'd rather invest in.

Clark and John open the show discussing the potential implications of the 1961 Fleer Wilt Chamberlain rookie card previously in an SGC 10 slab crossing over to a PSA 10 slab.
Has SGC now become the equivalent of Beckett's Raw Card Review service?
The guys then move on to "Hobby Headlines" to talk about the recent cancellation of both the Fanatics Fest shows in Pittsburgh and more recently in Orlando (due to the recent hurricanes.)
Is this a case of bad timing or is there something more that can be read into these cancellations? Has Fanatics Events been a little too aggressive trying to host these bigger card show events in 2024.
Are they pressing the reset button for 2025 and rethinking how it can be hosted in a more financially sustainable way? Or are they still planning to go full steam ahead and use these shows as an extravagant marketing tool to promote future product drops?
Next, Clark plays "Over/Under" with John who tries to guess if the last sale of five recently sold cards ended over or under $10,000.
Lastly, they play their regular weekly scheduled game called "Pick 1" where they each put up two cards and then debate which one they'd rather invest in.

EPISODE 245 - Clark and John opens the Friday show talking about the latest collaboration between GameStop and PSA. Will collectors start to submit their trading cards to GameStop? How will the cards be secured in the store premises? Is GameStop the future of the hobby shop?
Then Clark plays a new joint podcast episode he did with Paul Hickey of the Sports Card Strategy Show where they respectively introduce themselves to both podcast audiences.
They also introduce the idea of a reoccurring joint podcast episode where Paul brings his expertise in of strategies to investing in sports cards and Clark discusses issues that might impact the hobby on a more macro level.

Clark and Hyung open the show discussing the Topps Mercury Victor Wembanyama set and whether it's a good buy or extremely overrated.
Then the guys move on to "Hobby Headlines" to talk about the recent controversy of Grand Salami Sports Card claiming on X to have PSA change the grading on a Shohei Ohtani card after resubmitting twice and then complaining on social media how the Express Notes didn't make much sense.
What would this mean for PSA? Does the hobby need graders to get rid of the subjectivity of grading (use of AI?) Will this have any fallout at all or just another grading mishap swept under the rug?
Clark then plays "Quiz Show" again with Hyung who is presented with multiple choice questions on a few surprising hobby news items (ie. which card has sold publicly more than 75 times and each subsequent time for a profit?)
Lastly, they play their regular weekly scheduled game called "Pick 1" where they each put up two cards and then debate which one they'd rather invest in.

EPISODE 243 - Clark and Hyung start the show off by discussing the unfortunate news of the high-end Shohei Ohtani, Juan Soto, Mookie Betts and Fernando Tatis Jr. Bowman Chrome rookie autograph cards reported stolen by @lukadoncicpc after seeing the alleged tampered FedEx package with nothing inside. They discuss what measures can be taken to safeguard against this happening as much as possible. Plus they discuss who should make shipping valuable cards more safe (FedEx? eBay? Topps?)
The guys then move on to "Hobby Headlines" to talk about the new way Topps Now has been issuing cards of big sports moments (ie. adding rare chase cards randomly inserted in packs for free.) They also come up with ideas on how Topps Now cards can get even better and what the next evolution of these print-on-demand cards should be.
Clark then plays "Would You Rather" again with Hyung who is presented with two hobby scenarios and he then has to decide which he'd pick (ie. Take Geoff Wilson's offer for the 1/1 non-autograph U.S. Olympics basketball card OR go with Goldin and list the card up for auction.)
Lastly, they play their regular weekly scheduled game called "Pick 1" where they each put up two cards and then debate which one they'd rather invest in.

EPISODE 242 - Clark opens this Friday episode solo with the "Hobby Minute" briefly going over some of the more recent hobby news like the Shohei Ohtani 50/50 set, the bidding on his 50th home run ball, and the $53,000+ sale of the LeBron James/Kevin Durant/Stephen Curry Olympic 1/1 Non-Autograph Basketball Card.
Then Clark chats with Aaron (@tropiccollects on IG), who is the youngest guest to date in the history of this podcast at 15 years old.
He talks about how he got the complete 1986 Fleer Basketball set including the iconic Michael Jordan rookie card and which cards he likes to collect (you'll never guess.)
He also talks about his experience creating hobby content and all the people he's been able to meet ranging from fellow content creators to star athletes.
Plus Aaron shares his ideas to make the hobby more welcoming to younger collectors in order to grow and sustain the hobby for years to come.
