As daylight shortens and we approach the winter solstice, some rejoicing and carol singing has been going down in some parts of the country. Ample snow is on the ground. Let the snow sliding begin. Randy and Doug connect in this episode to discuss a wide range of topics, from a new store opening in Silverthorne to ATK's entry into the hybrid binding scene.   No matter what you have come for, you'll note a shift from cycling into the serene world of skiing uphill, clicking in, and seeking turns.

Snow in the hills reminds us that gravity and instabilities are parts of the backcountry experience. Stay focused, educated, and be wise. Happy holidays from the Cripple Creek crew.

Episode 121: Cycling Season Wanes, Touring Season Enters with a Boom

On Episode 121 of Totally Deep Podcast, Doug Stenclik and Randy Young of www.cripplecreekbc.com bring you the lowdown on the world of uphill and backcountry skiing and boarding. Gear, technique, fashion, jargon, guests, and assorted spray from folks who know how to earn it in the backcountry. The world's best backcountry skiing podcast.

Episode 121 of  Totally Deep is an all Doug and Randy affair.  Randy brings closure to the biking season as he completes ~111 miles and 11,400 feet of climbing in this race/organized event in and around Austin, Texas. For his part to make a quick pivot into winter, Doug picks up the ski touring mantle with some jaunts up Highland Bowl and fine early-season tour in Marble.

Doug's announcement that he may be eyeing a life with less travel to non-local races may come as shocking news to some. The door to a new life of competing in only local events comes in handy if you want to avoid traveling to Europe for a race and having it canceled.

On Episode 121 of the Totally Deep Podcast:

    1. Randy closes out the cycling season.
    2. And how did the ride go, Randy?
    3. Early season snowpack in the Rado—182% snowpack for Nov. 10.

    8. A big decision to focus on local races.
    9. Doug is not looking forward to training on a stationary trainer.
    10. CCBC ski team merch and acknowledging the spring bliss that is the PNW.

Episode 120: Aspen Pro Cycling's Dean Hill

On Episode 120 of Totally Deep Podcast, Doug Stenclik and Randy Young of www.cripplecreekbc.com bring you the lowdown on the world of uphill and backcountry skiing and boarding. Gear, technique, fashion, jargon, guests, and assorted spray from folks who know how to earn it in the backcountry. The world's best backcountry skiing podcast.

Episode 120 features Dean Hill, owner and coach at Aspen Pro Cycling.

Originally from Australia, Hill began his competitive career there as a BMX racer. Once exposed to the grind and endorphins of road cycling, cross country, and endurance mountain biking, he was hooked. Ultimately, Hill settled in the Roaring Fork Valley and began fixating on the skimo scene.

What you'll find in this episode, and in Hill's advice, is a relative calmness when it comes to performing your best. There's talk of improving sport-specific economy by focusing on technique and taking a lengthy break— for up to three weeks—to refresh and reboot between your sport-specific seasons. Hill calls it the full well-being reset.

As the snow falls in Colorado, it's time to scrape the skis and begin thinking about being the best version of yourself as you huff and puff uphill. It turns out, Hill might be able to help you out with that.

On Episode 120 of the Totally Deep Podcast:

      1. The Turboless Sprinter Van.
      2. The transition from BMX to mountain bike racing.

Episode 118: Gear Mods for the Dad Bod

On Episode 118 of Totally Deep Podcast, Doug Stenclik and Randy Young of www.cripplecreekbc.com bring you the lowdown on the world of uphill and backcountry skiing and boarding. Gear, technique, fashion, jargon, guests, and assorted spray from folks who know how to earn it in the backcountry. The world's best backcountry skiing podcast.

Episode 118 features CCBC Carbondale store manager Nick Penzel and his take on the dad scene. To be clear, Nick is not a dad; he has one, and he has a specific take on dads in the front and backcountry. Trigger warning: dads, come with an open mind as Nick has some more revolutions around the sun until he too understands dad-realm.

Another key factor is that Randy is a new dad. As a new dad, he's maybe feeling less spry than normal and looking for some good medicine—what he refers to as his dad-mod, not exactly a dad-bod. There's no leaving Doug out of the episode's commentary. What is true is that Doug is wiggling into a small Dynafit-branded Speed Jean. We can only imagine what these are: Part skimo outfit aprés attire? A cotton-Lycra blend? Doug is not a dad and isn't that slow, but he knows many dads who crush.

We digress. Back to Nick. As a store manager, Nick gets to eye and fondle gear daily. You'll get his take on the gear for dads and non-dads alike in episode 118.

On Episode 118 of the Totally Deep Podcast:

    1. Randy's epic: Driving through the night from TX. to CO. and acclimatizing.
    2. Group rides and shuttles—Doug finds clarity.
    3. The quick-hit Mexico volcano trip.
    4. The dad mod for the dad bod.
    5. Boot suggestions.
    6. Going Dynafit head to toe. Is it plausible?
    7. Going off the shelves, ATK bindings.
    8. Branding CCBC.

The time machine reveals it all started in the 50s when the Humanic Company began producing ski boots. Over time, a speedy snow leopard became an iconic symbol for an iconic brand: Dynafit. As part of the first trans-oceanic podcast, Doug reports from Germany, where he's been visiting the new Dynafit Speed Factory. Speed. It comes from somewhere.

Along with the joys of heading out on a just-to-far mountain bike ride, Doug provides insight into how the brand we associate with light and fast may evolve. Join us for the ride.

Episode 116: Bike & Ski Quivers and Streamlined Training

On Episode 116 of Totally Deep Podcast, Doug Stenclik and Randy Young of www.cripplecreekbc.com bring you the lowdown on the world of uphill and backcountry skiing and boarding. Gear, technique, fashion, jargon, guests, and assorted spray from folks who know how to earn it in the backcountry. The world's best backcountry skiing podcast.

It is time to not only raise the levels but also to get granular about the bike quiver. You decide if Doug throws shade at the gravel scene or is verbally fine-tuning his bike quiver to optimize what a gravel-road-mountain bike can be. And if clip-on time trial bars might save a few watts and seconds, maybe it is time to consider that gear add-on.

Doug and Randy also explore the mertis of a highly structured training plan. The conclusion is to be kind on yourself, know your prioritities, and maybe consider dialing back the training, if not the levels.
