In episode #34 of the New Zealand Brewer Podcast we thought we’d take a crack at our first “Style Profile” episode! For this episode we’ll be taking a look at New Zealand Draught. Love it or hate it, NZ Draught is a truly unique style of beer that gets very little acknowledgement by the international beer community. This is something that we think is a shame. So we decided to help tell the story of the popular, though somewhat controversial beer style.
And to make things a bit more fun, we asked Kelly Ryan, from Fork Brewing to join us on the show again to give us some insight into the process of brewing NZ Draught (as he did for several years while brewing for DB).
In this episode Gary Henwood also shares the recipe for his “Kainui Draught”; Kainui Brew Co’s take on the style.
We’ll also flip the table a bit and check in with Kelly for the always popular, “what’s going on in the brewery” segment, and then we’ll do a little homebrew Q & A in the third segment of the show.
As mentioned on the show, we are also excited to have launched the brand new New Zealand Brewer Patreon page. In episode #30 of the New Zealand Brewer Podcast we chat with Ryan Carvill and Simon Cooke from Froth Technologies (aka FrothTech), New Zealand’s only manufacturer of Brewer’s Yeast.
Until recently, New Zealand brewers have had no local yeast options, and have been forced to use yeast that is imported from far away places such as the USA and the UK (not always ideal). Froth Technologies has changed that by launching Aotearoa’s first commercial yeast lab! They also recently successfully raised more than $30,000 on Pledgeme, assuring that their expansion plans will come to fruition and home brewers will soon be able to get their hands on locally manufactured yeast.
In this episode we’ve asked Ryan and Simon to join us on the New Zealand Brewer Podcast and share their story and give us insight into their different strains and the plan for their company.
We’ll also catch up with Gary in another “what’s going on in the brewery” segment, a little homebrew Q & A, and we’ll crack into a few home brewed listener beers, as well as a new one from Kereru Brewing Company!

In episode #29 of the New Zealand Brewer Podcast we travel down to Wellington for this year’s Winter Ales Festival
A few weeks ago I had the pleasure to travel down to Wellington for this years Winter Ales Festival, an annual festival with the modest but noble goal of celebrating good beer. The event is sponsored by SOBA (Society of Beer Advocates) and is focused on showcasing new, limited and/or one-off releases to provide a mix of unique and interesting beers from around New Zealand. For this episode I thought it would be fun to bring along my microphone and chat with the many different brewers that attended the event.
In this episode I also share the recipe for my “Pain Free Sour Beer” which was requested by a listener.
We’ll also catch up on some beer news, another “what’s going on in the brewery” segment, a little homebrew Q & A, and we’ll crack into a few beers from Yeastie Boys, Fork Brewing, Brew Moon, Misfit Brewing, and Kainui Brew Co.

In episode #27 of the New Zealand Brewer Podcast we are joined by Sam Loader, the resident brewer from Mangrove Jack’s.
Mangrove Jack’s is New Zealand’s own yeast company. And while their yeasts are gaining in popularity around the world, there is still not that much information out there about each of these strains.
In this episode we aim to change that, and to help get homebrewer’s better acquainted with each of Mangrove Jack’s yeast strains, and learn how each strain differs from other similar strains on the market. Sam also offers tips on how to get the best character from each strain, and sheds a bit of light onto the process of developing and manufacturing commercial brewer’s yeast.
In this episode Sam also shares the recipe for his own “Extra Best Bitter”; a bit of an ESB and XPA hybrid beer.
