America Votes (what happened & what happens next): An interview with Keith Boag

The Herle Burly was created by Air Quotes Media with support from our presenting sponsor TELUS, as well as CN Rail, Forestry for a Better Future, and Fidelity.

Alright, you intrepid Herle Burly-ites, just a little bit of a shake up in the U.S. this week, eh? If you’re a fan of our Air Quotes Media Universe, you know that we’ve had the masterful Keith Boag covering this election for the last 3 months, filing his written analysis on the Trump/Harris campaign weekly, to our "Quotes" platform.

Keith is a friend of the pod. A 4-time guest here. A legend with the CBC for more than 30 years as Chief Political Correspondent, much of that time working in Washington D.C. He’s stood witness to several elections down there, observing and reporting on the discourse and the upending of political norms. “Upending” is probably an understatement. And that’s where we’re going with this conversation.

I want to concentrate on 2 broad themes: What the hell happened? And, what the hell happens next?

Minister Karina Gould, Leader of the Government in the House of Commons

The Herle Burly was created by Air Quotes Media with support from our presenting sponsor TELUS, as well as CN Rail, Forestry for a Better Future, and Fidelity.

Alright you curiouser and curiouser Herle Burly-ites, we’ll get right to it because we’ve got a time-stretched Cabinet Minister on the pod today.  The Honourable Karina Gould joins us.  Leader of the Government in the House of Commons.

Minister Gould was first elected as an MP for Burlington in the Trudeau majority of 2015. In 2017, at the age of 29, she was named Minister of Democratic Institutions and President of the Queen’s Privy Council for Canada, becoming the youngest female cabinet minister in Canadian history. She’s a graduate of McGill University and the University of Oxford with a master’s in international relations, and has also served as Minister of International Development and Minister of Families, Children and Social Development. With the birth of her son Oliver, she became the first federal Cabinet minister to give birth while holding office. So, just a little bit of trailblazing with Ms. Gould.

Today, a little bit about her life and what brought her to a career in public service.

But more time spent in the present: The Trudeau leadership discussion. Where it’s at. Or not at. We’ll focus on the Liberal Government legislative agenda going forward. And how to beat Poilievre.  What is the plan for that? And when will we see signs of it?

Don Drummond: Affordability Relief and How to Pay for It

The Herle Burly was created by Air Quotes Media with support from our presenting sponsor TELUS, as well as CN Rail and Forestry for a Better Future.

Greetings, you curiouser and curiouser Herle Burly-ites! Today on the pod, the kind of show I love. One of those single topic podcasts, where we drill down on a question, let the conversation flow and assume its own shape. I’ll outline the question in a moment, but first our guest: My friend and heavy-hitting Canadian-economy-deep-thinker, Don Drummond.

The Right Honourable Paul Martin called Don Drummond “One of the most principled and imaginative public servants with whom I have ever worked.” Don spent almost 23 years in senior positions in the federal Department of Finance, culminating in Associate Deputy Minister. Post government, he was Chief Economist for TD Bank, he is an Adjunct Professor at the School of Policy Studies at Queen’s University, and he’s an in-demand thinker, writer and commentator.

So, the question we’re exploring here is this: With the Fall Economic Statement as a backdrop, how can government address the political demand for affordability relief to Canadians? From programs like pharmacare and school food, to Poilievre “axing the tax”, to Doug Ford cutting every Ontarian a cheque for $200 … what is smart and what is dumb?

LIVE: Food Security with Meredith, Robson, and Roth

A special live episode hosted by the Maple Leaf Centre for Action on Food Security. The Herle Burly was created by Air Quotes Media with support from our presenting sponsor TELUS, as well as CN Rail and Forestry for a Better Future.

Alright, you curiouser and curiouser Herle Burly-ites! Welcome to this live recording of our podcast here at the Maple Leaf Food Security Symposium at the Globe and Mail Centre.

Today on the pod, we’ve brought together a Policy Panel to look at the issues surrounding Food Security:

Dr. Jennifer Robson has held senior roles in policy development and research with the Federal Government. She’s now Program Director and Associate Professor of Political Management at Carleton University. Her primary areas of research are at the intersection of household finances and the design of social policy.

Tyler Meredith is the former Head of Fiscal and Economic Policy for Prime Minister Trudeau and Ministers of Finance, Chrystia Freeland and Bill Morneau, leading the charge on delivering 6 federal budgets and 5 fall economic statements. Today, he’s a Founding Partner at Meredith/Boessenkool Policy Advisors.

Ginny Roth (a Herle Burly first-timer) is lifelong political activist, and former staffer and campaigner for the Progressive Conservative Party of Ontario. She’s now a Partner at Crestview Strategy, advising some of the largest food and beverage, consumer packaged goods and pharma companies in the world.

So, here’s what we’ll be talking about today...  What are strategies for addressing food security? Is it related to our current definitions of poverty? Are we defining poverty correctly? What roles can public programs play? Basic income … a National School Food Program … Increases to Minimum Wage and other ideas.

Retirement Security & Canadian Pensions: Meredith, Robson, and Speer

The Herle Burly was created by Air Quotes Media with support from our presenting sponsor TELUS, as well as CN Rail.

Greetings, you curiouser and curiouser Herle Burly-ites! A deep dive on the pod today into what’s become a political hot topic: Retirement Security and Canadian Pensions. The Bloc is threatening to trigger an early election over Bill C-319. A Bill that would raise Old Age Security payments for seniors between the ages of 65 and 74 by 10%.

Today, I want to step back and examine the whole area from a policy perspective. And so, we’ve brought back the vaunted Herle Burly #PolicyPanel … Tyler Meredith, Jennifer Robson, and Sean Speer.

Tyler is the former Head of Fiscal and Economic Policy for Prime Minister Trudeau and Ministers of Finance, Chrystia Freeland and Bill Morneau. Today, he’s a Founding Partner at Meredith/Boessenkool Policy Advisors.

Jennifer has held senior roles in policy development and research with the Federal Government. She’s now Program Director and Associate Professor of Political Management at Carleton University.

And Sean is a former senior economic advisor to Prime Minister Harper. Today, he’s Senior Fellow at U of T’s Munk School of Global Affairs and Public Policy. He’s also a Founder and Editor-at-Large at TheHub.ca.

So, here’s a road map of what I hope to cover today:

What’s the financial position of both current and soon-to-be retirees? How does an expanded CPP affect that? What was the government’s rationale for increasing OAS to only those over 75? What impact would the Bloc’s proposal have? How is the RRSP system working and how can we get more people saving earlier? And more!

The Honourable Lloyd Axworthy: My Life in Politics

The Herle Burly was created by Air Quotes Media with support from our presenting sponsor TELUS, as well as CN Rail.

A helluva guest on the pod today. Because he’s an historic guest. The Honourable Lloyd Axworthy is with me today. Elder statesman and academic. PhD in Politics from Princeton University. MLA in the Manitoba Legislature for 6 years, before embarking on a 21-year career in the House of Commons – more than half of those in the cabinets of Pierre Trudeau, John Turner and Jean Chretien.

    Minister of Foreign Affairs.
    Minister of Employment and Immigration.
Minister of Labour. Among other portfolios.

In his post-political life, President of the University of Winnipeg. And in 2015, promoted to Companion of The Order of Canada. Mr. Axworthy has a new book which I highly recommend: “Lloyd Axworthy: My Life in Politics”.

No exaggeration to say he was a key figure in some of the most important stories of the last half century. It’s a lot to cover in an hour. I want to talk about his view on cities, given his pre-political academic life as an acclaimed urbanist. Getting elected in Winnipeg. And then his time in Ottawa – with a focus on 3 areas: The Western Grain Transportation Act, Modernizing our Social Security System, and the Land Mines Treaty. And then a little about current politics and his post political life.
