In this episode we talk about doors, which is a fun subject to discuss during this holiday season when front doors are so decorated and seen by those we care about. We had a listener send in a great question about doors and we wanted to answer and expand on this. We will be doing two parts to this episode and in this part, we’re going to talk about interior doors. Sophie asked what the do’s and don’ts are of interior doors, if single door panels are going out of style, what type of door style is timeless, and do they all need to be the same? So listen to this episode to get our take.
“There are really these golden means to the weighted portion that you were just talking about. When we’re looking at door elevations and customizing them or picking them, your eyeballs naturally go to the one that feels the most balanced and has the weighted bottom,, and it has the hardware in the right spot. That’s a good door. If you don’t trust yourself, talk to somebody that you trust to look at the doors before you buy or build them.” 28:20

We almost forgot to do an episode on this until Sue started receiving a bunch of DM’s about it, so now we’re finally going to answer your questions about how Fall Market went this year. Everyone is going to see different things there because their eyes are conditioned to see what they love, what project they’re working on, but we wanted to tell you what we saw and give you our perspective. We go to market now too to understand the industry better because we are developing our own product now and we want to create things that don’t already exist, which we think will give you guys a unique perspective, so we hope you can enjoy this fun episode today.
“Patterns, and the form of the chair. It feels traditional, but then there are little things like it’s just turned on a 45 instead of straight. The detailing is good and the fabric is flow matched. Flow matching means that when it’s being upholstered in a pattern, the back matches up with the pattern as it turns up onto the seat, down onto the cushion, and so forth.” 33:25

“I have shoeboxes full of all the notes people have written to me, and on a bad day, I open up that box and it makes me feel better about myself. I just feel like this feels more permanent and it’s a more beautiful way to display it. So you know your lover, but I think it’s not only beautiful, but practical and it could hold something really precious to him.” 39:50

“There might be key things that you know to avoid like a skirted sofa, or the color purple, or just things like that, but when you start to actually look at images together, I think you’re going to find more commonalities than you think you have.” 20:10

Today’s episode is all about fireplaces and comes from a listener question we received, which asks “With regard to the cast concrete mantel that is often discussed, could you confirm whether this is just the top shelf of the fireplace, or the whole of the fireplace? And is it pre-colored, painted, stained, or left concrete gray?” Listen as we go into detail about the various aspects of a fireplace and getting the best design, making the right choices along your design journey.
“If you do the custom fire box, you need yourself a nice big chimney to allow the fire power, oxygen, all of the ventilation. The bigger the fire box, the bigger the chimney, the more chimney pots. This is gonna give your house a really awesome, estate-like look, and it really does have to vent out the chimney.” 17:30

We wanted to do this episode this week after a listener of ours asked “I’m a design obsessed homeowner in Denver planning to finish my basement in the next couple of years. An episode on basements would be amazing! Space planning, choosing finishes, features to include, etc.” We live in the West where we do a lot of basements, so with all our experience and expertise, we have a lot to say about this subject. We have a list of 6 things we’ve done in basements that we found successful and beautiful, so join us today to find out what those are and what we have to say!
“Guest rooms for downstairs, so your guests can be on another level. I know my parents love having all of this extra space for us kids to come home, there’s furnaces and cooling for different levels and they really only have to turn on the heat or AC on those levels when we come home.” 38:05
