    [1] Byeon Woo-seok has become embroiled in controversy over excessive measures taken by his security team against fans and other travelers at Incheon Airport. [2] The incident surfaced online following Byeon’s departure for Hong Kong on Friday for his final Asian fan meeting slated for Sunday. 쯔양 사태에 유투브 사이버 렉카 규제 목소리

    진행자: 홍유, Elise Youn

    Extortion of YouTuber Tzuyang highlights 'cyber wrecker' issues in S. Korea

    기사요약: 쯔양 사태를 계기로 사이버 렉카 유튜버들을 플랫폼 차원에서 규제가 필요하다는 목소리가 나오고 있다.

    [1] Following YouTuber Tzuyang's recent revelation about having been assaulted and financially exploited for four years by her former boyfriend, a group of YouTubers is now suspected of having blackmailed her for money in exchange for keeping quiet about her past.

    *revelation: 폭로(된 사실)

    *exploit: 착취하다

    *in exchange for: ~대신의, 교환으로

    [2] The revelation shocked and angered viewers over what many are calling the moral bankruptcy of "cyber wreckers" here – those who profit from posting rumors or negative news about celebrities often written in malicious ways. The term derives from tow trucks -- called “wreckers” in Korean -- likening the actions of the posters to privately-run tow trucks that flash their lights and use sirens even though they are not state-approved emergency vehicles.

    *moral bankruptcy: 도덕적 파산

    *maliciously: 악의를 갖고, 심술궂게

    [3] A recently revealed recording suggested that YouTuber Gu Je Yeok, whose real name is Lee Jun-hee, had blackmailed Tzuyang -- real name Park Jung-won -- with fellow YouTubers Caracula and Jeon Gukjin also potentially involved. It captured Lee allegedly discussing with Caracula and Jeon how to make money off Park's painful past.

    *potentially: (…이 될) 가능성이 있는, 잠재적인

    [4] In the recording, Lee told the others that Park had allegedly already paid him 11 million won ($8,000) to keep quiet about her past, and the others advised him about how to attack Tzuyang’s channel, one of Korea’s most profitable YouTube channels. They suggested that it would be better to have Park "take care of them" rather than releasing a video about her past, saying she makes enough money to pay them off.

    *profitable: 수익성이 있는[있을 것 같은]

    *domestic: 국내의

Fight! Fight!"

    *prompt: 즉각적인, 지체 없는

    *swarm: 떼[무리]를 지어 다니다

    [2] The shooter was dead, one rally attendee was killed and two other spectators were injured, the Secret Service said in a statement. The incident was being investigated as an assassination attempt.

    *motive: 동기, 이유

    Future of fear shown in BIFAN Choice section

    [1] Under the banner “Stay Strange,” Korea’s largest genre film festival, the 28th Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival, or BIFAN, kicked off on July 4 and ran through Sunday.

    This year the film fest has brought a display of 253 films from 49 countries to the small Gyeonggi Province city just west of Seoul. Never the festival to shy away from trends in film -- existential or not -- this year’s edition has notably opened the door to generative artificial intelligence, including 15 AI films and a separate competitive category.

    shy away 피하다

    existential (인간의) 존재에 관한[관련된], 실존주의적인

    [2] Beyond technological trends, the festival has long celebrated originality, as seen in the eight films in the Bucheon Choice: Features international competition’s explorations of fear, highlighted by well-executed experimentation in genre and drama.

    beyond …저편에[너머]

    well-executed 계획대로 잘 실행된

    [3] “Oddity,” from Ireland, is a well-paced paranormal thriller. Set mostly in a home disconnected from the world -- no landline and faint cell service -- it preys on fears of the strange and unknown amplified in isolation.

    [4] The thrust of the film is built around Carolyn Bracken’s performance in dynamically different dual roles. She portrays Darcy, a blind woman who claims to be able to connect to objects to see what they’ve seen. She returns to the remote rural home one year after her twin sister was murdered there.

    트럼프 진영 “주한미군 일부 감축 가능성...철수는 아닐 것”

    진행자: 박준희, Elise Youn

    US troops in S. Korea could be reduced, but not withdrawn, Trump allies tell Seoul lawmaker

    기사 요약: 위성락 더불어민주당 의원, “트럼프 당선 시 주한미군 철수 가능성 배제 못 해”

    Rep. Wi Sung-lac, Seoul’s former ambassador to Russia and a Democratic Party of Korea lawmaker, said Thursday some key Donald Trump allies have told him they think US troops in South Korea could be reduced -- although not completely withdrawn -- if the former president wins in November.

    * Former: 과저, 이전의 / Previous

    * Key: 중요한 / Crucial

    * Ally: 동맹국, 협력자

    * Reduce: [규모, 크기] 등을 줄이다, 축소하다 / Decrease

    “I was told by his campaign officials that if Trump is re-elected, some reductions in US troops levels in South Korea were likely, but that they would not be withdrawn completely,” he told The Korea Herald. “I was also told South Korea could be asked to share more of the defense costs.”

    * Withdraw: 철수하다 / Remove

    * Likely: ~할 것 같은, 것으로 예상되는 / To be expected

    * Share: 부담하다; 공유하다 / Split; Divide

    But Wi said he personally would not rule out US troops from being pulled out of South Korea altogether, if a second-term Trump administration becomes a reality.

    * Rule out: 배제하다 / Exclude

    * Pull out: 빠져나가다 / Withdraw

    * Reality: 현실 / Actuality

    “Some believe that the establishment officials in Washington would prevent Trump from pulling US troops from the Korean Peninsula and making other moves that he hinted at. That may have been the case during the first-term Trump administration,” he said.

    * Prevent: 막다 / Stave off

    * Troop: 병사 / Soldiers; Armed forces

    키즈 시장 덮친 "아동 명품룩"

    진행자: 박준희, Elise Youn

    [Weekender] VIB treatment: Luxury market surges for ‘very important babies’

    기사 요약: 저출산 시대지만 유아동룩 시장은 프리미엄 아동룩 엎고 호황 중이다.

    * Abating: [강도가] 약해지다, [강도를 약화시키다, 줄이다 / Ease off; Diminish

    * Binge: 한동안 흥청망청하기 / Spend lavishly

    [2] “Most parents that I know think that putting a luxury onesie that costs hundreds of dollars on a baby is excessive because they grow out of clothes so quickly. But, there are also some parents, particularly those who are well-off, who are willing to buy expensive clothes for their kids,” said a 38-year-old Seoul resident surnamed Hong who is the father of two sons.

    * Well-off: 부유한, 잘사는 / Wealthy, Rich

    Canine custody clash: Does dog belong to buyer or guardian?

    기사 요약: 반려견을 처음 분양받은 사람과 실제로 기른 사람 중 누구에게 소유권이 있는지 가리는 판결에서 1심과 2심이 엇갈린 결론을 내 해당 사건이 대법원 판단을 받게 됐다.

    *sue: 고소하다, 소송을 제기하다

    기사 요약: OTT 플랫폼의 스포츠 중계권 확보 경쟁이 치열해지고 있다

     IV drips: A quick energy shot for overworked Koreans

    [1] “Feeling burnt out? You’ve come to the right place,” the doctor said during my consultation at a clinic in Yeouido, Seoul's financial district, before prescribing what he called a “garlic injection.”

    * prescribe: 처방을 내리다 n. prescription / 규정,지시하다 (stipulate)

    [2[ As an average South Korean national, I am used to eating tons of garlic, but I wasn’t quite ready to have it injected into my veins. It turned out that the “garlic injection” wasn't actually a shot of garlic extract or anything similar. It's a colloquial expression for an intravenous infusion therapy of vitamins that has a hint of a garlic scent.

    *colloquial: 구어의, 일상적 대회의

    *intravenous: 정맥으로 들어가는

    [3] The prescription for me was a mix of B vitamins, vitamin C and an antioxidant called glutathione, which he said should help boost my energy and reduce fatigue.

    When asked how long the fatigue treatment would last, the doctor said that it would depend on my workload. “For people who have a lot of work, the effect may disappear in two to three days, and for others, it could last for as long as a week.”

    *antioxidant: 산화방지제, 방부제

    *fatigue: 피로

    [4] I came out of the clinic feeling rejuvenated, not knowing if it was the nap or the IV that helped. The treatment cost 110,000 won ($80). In South Korea, where medical care is highly accessible and affordable, primary care clinics offer IV therapy consisting of diverse nutrient cocktails, billing them as “Cinderella" shots, “placenta” shots, and “white jade” shots for anti-aging, curing hangovers, boosting immunity or even promoting glowing skin.

    No. of mosquitoes unusually high in June

    [1] Amid a relentless heat wave sweeping across South Korea, Seoul has seen a significant surge in its mosquito population over the past two weeks, turning a seasonal nuisance into a widespread concern.

    *relentless: 가차 없는, 끈질긴 (relent: v. 포기하고 동의하다, 누그러지다)

    *nuisance: 골칫거리, 성가신 사람(것/일) / public nuisance: 사회적 골칫거리

    [2] According to the Seoul Mosquito Forecast System, the average mosquito activity index in the capital city has increased to the highest level of 100 in its four-tier system for two consecutive weeks since June 2.

    *consecutive: 연이은

    [3] The highest level of "unpleasant" means outdoor mosquito larval habitats are 50 to 100 percent formed. It is also defined by when five to 10 mosquitoes are seen penetrating indoors at night in areas where the concentration of freestanding houses is high, or when a person gets more than five mosquito bites during an outdoor activity at night, assuming that one remains in place for 10 to 15 minutes.

    *larval: 유충, 애벌레

    *penetrate: 관통하다, 침투하다

    [4] During the same period a year ago, the mosquito activity index averaged 65.6.

    "Unlike last year, it has rained a lot since early spring and the temperature has remained high, which has created the conditions for mosquitoes to live in puddles and other places early on," said Kim Dong-gun, an associate professor at Sahmyook University's Smith College, who is in charge of mosquito forecasting in Seoul.
