The BiG Scuba Duo, Gemma and Ian chat to Aniela Martin. Aniela Martin is a scuba diver and an offshore hydrographic surveyor, working as part of a large team out at sea mapping the seabed and collecting geological information.
Aniela has a deep passion for the underwater world that began after her first ever scuba dive whilst on holiday as a teenager. Having just finished high school she wasn’t sure what career path to take but her first adventure into the underwater world sparked a passion and strong curiosity for all things in the sea. Aniela went on to study Oceanography at Southampton university and during her studies became a PADI divemaster, working the summer breaks at a dive centre in Southern Italy.
Aniela has been working as a hydrographic surveyor for three years now which involves mapping the seabed for various scopes such as scientific research, projects concerning green energy installations- wind farms, and communication links. Most of the projects she works on involve the use of ROVs (Remotely Operated Vehicles) which use cutting edge technology allowing high resolution data, especially in deep water.
Aniela’s passion, aside from the underwater world is communication - Being able to convey her love for the big blue.

A slightly different episode. Ian, Gemma and Honey visited the Farne Islands for a 3 day diving trip in July 2024 and give a review of their experiences. The Farne Islands are in the North East of the UK and have numerous dive sites only a short distance from the mainland and the harbour and coastal town of Seahouses.
Our trip was organised by our local dive centre, Christal Seas Scuba https://www.scuba4me.co.uk/ and Sovereign Diving https://www.sovereigndiving.co.uk/ looked after us over the weekend.
We stayed at the best B&B we know called Malabar https://malabar-seahouses.co.uk/
Here are links to the dive sites around the Farne Islands https://www.sovereigndiving.co.uk/wreck-diving.html and here is a bit more information about the new dive site we visited, The Coryton https://www.lindisfarne.org.uk/shipwrecks/3.htm
We also enjoyed great food at Bamburgh Castle Seahouses, https://www.inncollectiongroup.com/bamburgh-castle-inn/ and Italian food at Insieme https://www.insieme-seahouses.co.uk/ and then amazing Italian food and service in Edinburgh at Gordons Trattoria https://www.gordonstrattoria.com/
If you would like more detailed information about our trip then do email or send us a DM and we have a PDF guide with more information.

In this episode join us in conversation with Sally Cartwright. Saly started diving 1993 after an injury on a mountaineering trip. After a bet with a local dive club and a successful try dive, Sally took up the challenge and a new life direction. Early into her diving career she found herself using mixed gas and rebreathers. Finding herself at the bottom of Dorothea Quarry at 107m or scouring the seabed looking for new shipwrecks of the English Channel pretty much became a way of life for Sally as it does many others.
Sally became involved with diving agencies and then went back to school and qualified to teach TDI Inspiration rebreathers. However, she decided that this career was not for her and started to investigate hyperbaric medicine.
During the pandemic her ambulance work and diving world collided and she started working for Midlands Diving Chamber, firstly as a Chamber Attendant and progressed into management.
Sally has worked on some high-profile projects including the Bluebird Project that involved raising Bluebird, Donald Campbell’s water speed record boat and Donald himself from the depths of Coniston Water in 2001. Since then, the team have restored Bluebird and successfully ran her on the Isle of Bute in 2018.
Sally champions the diving industry’s support in all that she has achieved The diving industry is not a rich one so any help just boosts morale and spreads the word what a wonderful sport we have, especially in the UK. Sally is well known for organising social diving trips and now on the road to recovery after knee surgery is looking forward to getting back out in the deep again.
