In the second of two episodes linked to the association for Environmental Studies & Sciences annual conference, Dr Chris Parsons chats to the award winners at this year’s conference.  

First of all, Hanna Morris, the student award winner, discusses her groundbreaking  research on public attitudes to The Green New Deal.  

Dr. Susan Caplow, the winner of the early career award, discusses the environmental studies program she developed at the University of Montevallo, her community outreach, and the challenges, and rewards, with working on environmental issues in Alabama. 

Finally, Dr. Kimberly Smith of Carleton College talks about her illustrious career that led to her winning the “Freudenberg Lifetime Achievement Award”. They also talk about bipartisanship in environmental politics and, to draw the episode to a close, Dr. Smith bequeaths some sage career advice for up-and-coming environmental scientists.

In the first of two interviews linked to the association for Environmental Studies & Sciences annual conference, Dr. Chris Parsons chats with the conference’s keynote speaker Dr. Myra Young Armstead about her plenary speech “Unleashing the Power of an Interdisciplinary Landscape, Environmental Studies”.

In addition, they chat about a host of other environmental issues including changes in ways the public viewed the environment; community science and the Flint water crisis; science communication; the difference framing environmental messages as stories make; how the Bush and Obama Administrations both prepared for pandemics; and how students and universities have responded to the COVID-19 pandemic. 

They also discuss whether we do actually learn from the environmental mistakes of history or do we repeat them again and again. 

This week Chris Parsons interviews Dr. Tom Dietz and they discuss the human dimensions of environmental studies, interdisciplinary environmental programs and their evolution, the history of Earth Day, and how field ecology and sociology are actually the “hard sciences” and the lab-based sciences are “easy”. The Loch Ness monster and Bigfoot even get a mention in this episode! 

Sophia Paul and Dr. Dorceta Taylor join the host Dr. Chris Parsons this week to talk about their new paper, soon to appear in the Journal Environmental Studies & Sciences, about the salaries of CEOs and senior staff in environmental organizations and the substantial differences in salary based on gender and ethnicity.
