The Anthropology

HYPEBEAST Radio

In The Anthropology we dive into the movements and minds shaping culture today. In its first season, Fashion Anthropology, journalist Tiffany Godoy talks to the artist, designers and original street scene makers that surround the brand Slam Jam. Founded by Luca Benini in 1989, it started as an Italian distributor of Stussy, Carhartt and Nike. In 2018, they opened the art cultural space Spazio Maiocchi in Milan and Luca Benini alongside Matthew Williams created the brand Alyx. In this five episode series we immerse ourselves into the culture of Slam Jam.

In the final episode of Fashion Anthropology: Slam Jam, we dive into Luca's collaborative brand with designer, Matthew Williams and the legacy of Slam Jam. In 2015, Luca started a new type of project, the brand Alyx. Understated clothes, a culture deeply rooted in California and an added modern touch of sustainability, Matthew's successful collaborations with Nike and Moncler Genius prove that once again Luca Benini’s instinct is spot on. We talk to Matthew and members of his community.

S1 E3: Slam Jam, The Backbone

In episode 3, we’re joined by co-founders of Carhartt WIP, Edwin and Salome Faeh to learn about the symbiotic relationship of the two brands. Luca’s love for America’s surf, sport and music culture was the catalyst for founding Slam Jam. Even earlier in Switzerland, Edwin Faeh embraced the another side of US culture — classic denim, motorcycle jackets and later workwear including Carhartt. In 1989 with his wife Salomi, he co-founded Carhartt WIP. Soon after Slam Jam started distributing Carhartt in Italy. Bonded naturally by mutual interest and attitudes, its likely Carhartt’s price point and consistent sales that allowed Slam Jam to mix cool with e-commerce. Together these two companies have become the backbone of European street culture.

S1 E1: Slam Jam, The Foundation

In episode 1, Tiffany dives into Slam Jam’s mission, inspiration and early beginnings. Interviewing Gabriele Casaccia, Creative Director of Slam Jam and Angelo Flaccavento, columnist for Business of Fashion and editor at Italian Vogue, we learn about the international mindset of founder Luca Benini and his connection to American streetwear such as Stüssy, Carhartt WIP and Aries. While the remote town of Ferrara, Italy plays a strong role in the foundation of Slam Jam, the brand has also adhered to the likings of British and American culture.
