The American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons has made this podcast available for listeners interested in discussion of the latest scientific advancements, research findings and advocacy activities in the hip and knee arthroplasty profession.
At the 2024 AAHKS Annual Meeting, David G. Deckey, MD, Cody C. Green, MD and Kevin A. Sonn, MDÂ all members of the AAHKS Patient Education Committee sat down to define the different types of technology used during joint replacement such as manual technique, computer navigation and robotic systems. They also discussed the pros and cons for each technique as well. This information is helpful for patients who are still choosing their surgeon and being bombarded with misinformation due to excessive and incorrect marketing.Â
Here are a few articles that help decide which surgeon and technology is best for you: Computer-Assisted Knee Surgery, Computer-Assisted Hip Surgery and Choosing the Right Surgeon for You.Â

At the 2024 AAHKS Annual Meeting, Shaun P. Patel, MD and Andrew M. Schwartz, MD sat down to speak with the winner of the 2024 Clinical Research Award. The study’s main author, Simon W. Young, MD talked about the importance of postoperative pain management in primary total knee arthroplasty and how IORA of antibiotics for prophylaxis in TKA is known to increase local tissue concentrations. The study that included 46 patients investigated using IORA Diclofenac to improve postoperative pain management in TKA, compared to IV Diclofenac. Broken up into two groups, one group received IORA Diclofenac and IV normal saline placebo and the second group received IV Diclofenac and 10 normal saline placebo.

In a very special recording of AAHKS Amplified, three leading orthopaedic surgeons Zachary C. Lum, DO, Obinna O. Adigweme, MD and Adam A. Sassoon, MD, MS talk candidly on how they approach, address and respond to this question often asked by their patients “Do I Need A Hip or Knee Replacement?”
Although this seems like a fairly simple question to respond to, it’s actually very difficult to answer and responses vary from patient to patient. In this recording, each surgeon shares how they carefully evaluate their patients to provide them with the best course of action as it relates to their health. With this being an elective surgery, they share how they take very careful measures to provide them with medical guidance that will benefit them as the patient and improve quality of life overall. If you’re considering a hip or knee replacement, review our Patient Education website at hipknee.aahks.org/ for various articles that can help guide you along the journey of determining if you’re a candidate for surgery, ways of preparing for surgery, alternatives to surgery and so many more.

We’re truly excited to bring to you our latest recording on AAHKS Amplified. In this recording, we had the wonderful opportunity to hear the patient’s perspective from two arthroplasty patients. Both underwent hip and/or knee replacement surgery and candidly shared their experiences in a symposium at the 2024 AAHKS Spring Meeting in Atlanta, Georgia, moderated by AAHKS Diversity Advisory Board (DAB) Chair, Muyibat A. Adelani, MD.Â
Dr. Adelani spoke with Thomas Pattillo and Chrissie Smith to learn what their journeys were like. You’ll learn what challenges they faced, what their selection process was for picking an orthopaedic surgeon, how they prepared for surgery and what weight loss requirements were imposed on them to begin the surgery process.

In the latest recording of AAHKS Amplified, we highlight the stories of a unique community within AAHKS, and just in time to celebrate Pride Month. Zachary C. Lum, DO, Vice-Chair of the Diversity Advisory Board (DAB) speaks openly and candidly with Jaime L. Bellamy, DO, MS and Chloe E.H. Scott, MD to hear about their journey as members of the LGBTQ+ community. As members of a community that is underrepresented in medicine and arthroplasty, Drs. Bellamy and Scott provide a little insight into their journeys as surgeons, challenges and cultural best practices that we can learn from and interesting patient stories.
In this very open and transparent conversation, Dr. Lum explores the decisions of Drs. Bellamy and Scott to become orthopaedic surgeons. His goal in recording this podcast is to use the voices heard and information shared to support civil rights and equality. Celebrating the diversity that already exists within AAHKS and using that uniqueness to enrich our patient’s lives.

The post Celebrating the LGBTQ+ Community in AAHKS first appeared on AAHKS.At the 2023 AAHKS Annual Meeting, the chair of the Digital Health & Social Media Committee Shaun P. Patel, MD and Dustin J. Schuett, DO sat down with Joshua C. Rozell, MD  to discuss his paper presented at the meeting on how there’s additional stress on surgeons who peform surgery on patients with an elevated BMI. In Dr. Rozell’s study, he showed that additional work is required and placed on surgeons who perform these kinds of surgeries versus your standard primary knee or hip replacement surgery. The goal was to quantify and provide data showing this.
Listen to the recording for more on Dr. Rozell’s findings on the association of complex cases and how it affects the surgeon.
