Dr. Berry Pierre prides himself on being able to educate his patients and make them feel comfortable in their most trying times.
So, let’s talk about why Robert F. Kennedy Jr. should not be the Secretary of Health and Human Services if we want to avoid another public health disaster…
Did you know that RFK Jr. was one of the twelve people dubbed the “Disinformation Dozen” responsible for over 50% of misinformation in the United States during the height of the pandemic?
A lot of people like RFK Jr. for his advocacies on artificial food and the environment, and I have nothing against that; I believe those things are important. But if we’re going to have a conversation about health-related initiatives, I will not just sit here quietly as if I’m okay with him being appointed as the Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services.
Let me make this clear: I am not okay with this guy being the Secretary of Human and Health Services. There are people who are no longer here to listen to this episode because they passed away due to misinformation because of the likes of people like RFK Jr. But let’s be honest, despite his contribution to misinformation, some people might still not understand where I’m coming from.
That’s why in this episode of Medicine Mondays, I’ll be talking about some of the many reasons why RFK Jr. is not the man for the job, and more importantly, why an RFK Jr.-led Health and Human Services could lead to another public health disaster.
Why you need to check this episode:
-Discover five out of the many debunked claims that RFK Jr. perpetuated during the height of the pandemic; -Learn the roles and responsibilities of the Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services, and why RFK Jr. is not qualified for the job; and -Find out why we should not ignore the lack of truthfulness in the health advocacies of Robert F. Kennedy Jr.
“Yes, I understand that there are some bridges that have been burnt down in regards to health information and communication and trust. But trust me, this person [Robert F. Kennedy Jr.] is not the guy who you want leading bridge-building festivities back again. That is not the case whatsoever. That is the problem.” – Dr. Berry Pierre
Notable Quotes:
“As a physician, you don’t have the leeway to be like, ‘Politics doesn’t matter, I’m only focused on medicine.’ Maybe 20-30 years ago, you could probably get away with that level of an excuse. But as we continue to see just how much politics affects how I practice on a day-to-day basis, the idea that you can just ignore it, act like it's not important, act like it doesn't affect you and your patients–it’s gone; that's out of here.” – Dr. Berry Pierre
“I can see why you can be a supporter of an RFK Jr.-led health department because you see some of the positives…[But] we also have to deal with the negatives–and those negatives will far outweigh any fight against artificial ingredients and whatever things he wants to do.” – Dr. Berry Pierre
“Just because you’re an advocate of things does not mean that what you’re advocating for is true, or more importantly, that you’re doing it with any level of foundation of expertise…Just because you’re vocal does not mean that you are truthful.” – Dr. Berry Pierre

So, let’s talk about the journey of getting to 400 episodes—how it started, the lessons I’ve learned, and what the future holds for this platform…
What began as a small passion project of a medical student has now become an incredible milestone—we’re in our 400th episode!
This is such a remarkable feat for me, because 90% of the podcasts out there stop publishing after their first three episodes, and of the remaining 10% that get past it, 90% stop at 20. Yet, here we are, at our 400th—a milestone I couldn’t have reached without your unwavering support.
But in a world flooded with struggling podcasters and hundreds of thousands of podcasts, how have I stayed committed for nearly a decade, creating and sharing life-changing insights every single week?
In this episode, we’ll answer all that as we reflect on the journey that led us to this remarkable day. So, whether you’ve been with us since the beginning or just tuned in recently, join me as we celebrate this milestone and pursue our passions relentlessly.
Why you need to check this episode:
-Learn what’s made it possible for us to reach the incredible milestone of having 400 episodes; -Understand the importance of consistency and passion when doing something that you wish to stand out on; -Get to know the reason why I’m still doing podcasting even after reaching its 400th episode; and -Discover the plans we have for the future of the podcast as we continue with the mission to help you think like a doctor and empower yourself for better health.
“If you’re an aspiring podcaster or someone who wants to get out there, understand that those are probably going to be your two biggest driving forces in the beginning…The consistency has got to be there…The passion has got to be there. Because if you’re not a celebrity, there’s not a lot of people who are going to know who you are or what you’re talking about in the beginning…So yes, you’re going to be in the sea of podcasts that are out there, but what’s going to help differentiate you and help you stand out is that you’re going to keep on going.” – Dr. Berry Pierre
Notable Quotes:
“This is what makes the 400th episode so important—90% of podcasts don’t publish after three episodes…[and] of the remaining 10%, 90% quit after 20 episodes…So, think about the outlier that you would have to be just to make it to episodes 21, 31, 40, 100, 200, and where we’re at today—400. Think about what it takes to be consistent, especially from a podcast perspective.” – Dr. Berry Pierre
“I know that [the podcast] has saved lives, and that’s the beauty. I don’t know all of the lives I saved; I just know that I have a voice, and in this profession of medicine, you do things because you want to change and you want to help foster positive change—and I know I’ve done that over these…past decade of podcasting…There’s so much content out there because I know there’s so much lives that need to be changed.” – Dr. Berry Pierre

So, let’s talk about long COVID and why it’s something we need to keep paying attention to even after the height of the pandemic…
Imagine dealing with a disease three months after it first hit…and once you go to your doctor, you leave without answers—no explanation for why it’s happening or guidance on how to heal. This is the reality a lot of people go through these days as they live with long COVID.
A condition with hundreds of possible symptoms, it’s a concern the medical community is still catching up to, which leaves many feeling isolated in their struggle. More often than not, people aren’t believed, and worse, they can’t find effective help.
That’s why in this episode, we’ll discuss long COVID, the hundreds of symptoms tied to it, who is most at risk, and the importance of physicians acknowledging and validating patients’ experiences.
Whether you’re living with long COVID, know someone who is, or are a healthcare provider looking to support your patients better, this episode will equip you with reasons why we need to listen, validate, and find solutions together—starting today. So, join us and discover how empathy, awareness, and better communication can be key to making a positive difference.
Why you need to check this episode:
- Understand what dealing with long COVID means, especially with its extensive range of symptoms; - Discover the key risk factors that put you at higher risk of having long COVID; and - Recognize the importance of patient-physician communication, especially understanding and validating patient experiences, and why long COVID isn’t something that should be dismissed
“It’s just one of those things where we really have to have open eyes and ears for our patients because it is clear that your patients aren’t making it up. It is not ‘in their head’ just because they had COVID. This is real, and the numbers are starting to show it.” – Dr. Berry Pierre
Notable Quotes:
“Having a good conversation [and] a good rapport with your patients is going to be first in line to help diagnose a patient with this syndrome. Because again, there are no tests, and more importantly, because there are no tests, there really isn’t a one-stop treatment option either.” – Dr. Berry Pierre
“Make sure we are very understanding and listening to our patients…As a healthcare provider, you almost got to be like a coach…Understand them, reiterate what their issues are, and then try to kind of at least lead them to this aspect of ‘Hey, I think I know what's wrong’. Because if you tell the person ‘Hey, I don't know what's wrong with you, I'm not sure when this is going to be over, but take this medication here’, they're not going to have their trust in you that you're actually taking care of them.” – Dr. Berry Pierre
“My healthcare providers, I don’t know if you know this, [but] a lot of people—a lot of your own patients—are seeking help online because they don’t think you can give it to them.” – Dr. Berry Pierre

So, let’s talk about whether New Year's resolutions are truly a scam or not…
Have you ever started a New Year’s resolution only to abandon it by March? Maybe you’ve felt like the whole concept was just a ploy for gyms, businesses, or apps to profit off your ambition, or in other words—a scam.
This very reason has repeatedly caused many people to lose motivation to achieve the goals they’ve set beforehand.
But here’s the truth—resolutions fail not because they’re a scam, but because of the approach many take while working on them. By focusing on vague goals or external pressures, most people set themselves up not to succeed but to fail.
That’s why in this episode, we’re debunking the “scam” myth as we share actionable strategies that will help you crush your goals for 2025 and set you up for success.
If you want to take control of your resolutions and make 2025 your best year yet, tune in to this episode and discover the mindset shifts and habits that will lead you to lasting success.
Why you need to check this episode:
-Learn why resolutions often fail by March (and how to avoid this common trap); -Understand the critical difference between intrinsic and extrinsic motivating factors, especially which among the two will truly drive you towards lasting success; and -Recognize how goal visualization, aligning your goals with your values, and creating systems—not just goals—set you up for long-term success
“Remember, New Year's resolutions are not a scam. Even though they sound like it, they are not a scam. It's the approach to your New Year's resolutions that is the scam. If you approach it in a scammy way…in a way that is only dictated on what it looks like on IG, what it looks like on TikTok, if you approach it in that fashion, then yeah, the scam is there—but you're the scammer. You're scamming yourself from being a better person…You are the scammer if you think New Year's resolutions are scams, because you are going to be able to try to tell yourself the lies that are available.” – Dr. Berry Pierre
Notable Quotes:
“In our journey of trying to figure out ‘is a New Year's resolution something that I should be doing?’, recognize [that] one factor is going to push you when all the outside world is blocked out and not paying you any mind, and one factor is going to maybe motivate you for the short run, but after a while, you're going to start making excuses…So, understand that there [are] two important drivers in your journey of trying to change for the better, trying to do something different. And depending on which route you go—[intrinsic] reasoning versus your extrinsic reasoning—is a good barometer of whether you'll be doing it come July, August, September and you'll be a different person come December.” – Dr. Berry Pierre
“Your brain does not want to fail; your brain is not trained to fail. It is trained to protect, but it’s not trained to fail.” – Dr. Berry Pierre
“It’s tough when we have to say, ‘I’m the reason why I failed’…So, I want you to be able to say, ‘I’m the reason why I lost the weight. I’m the reason why I go to the gym every day and I gained all this muscle. I’m the reason why I’m a better friend to all of my friends now, and I’m the best brother or sister.’ I want you to be able to say at the end of 2025, ‘I’m the reason why these things are occurring’, because we have to look inward. It has to be an inward-looking goal to say ‘this is why I want to do it’, because that is what’s going to carry you for the year 2025 and beyond; trust me.” – Dr. Berry Pierre

So, let’s talk about polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) and why understanding it is crucial for women’s fertility and health…
Did you know that 1 in 10 women of reproductive age are affected by polycystic ovarian syndrome?
Commonly known as PCOS, this condition that involves hormone imbalances disrupts ovulation, leads to insulin resistance, and can increase risks of miscarriage and pregnancy complications.
It affects a lot of women, and yet, many still don’t understand how and why it’s a problem that needs intervention.
That’s why in this episode, we’ll break down the facts about PCOS, debunk myths, and explore treatment options to help women take control.
Whether you’re dealing with irregular periods, weight gain, or fertility struggles, tune in and learn how you can help someone you care about on the path to better well-being and fertility.
Why you need to check this episode:
- Understand how PCOS impacts 1 in 10 women of reproductive age, influencing hormone balance, ovulation, and overall fertility; - Discover the link between insulin resistance, chronic inflammation, and elevated androgen levels that exacerbate PCOS symptoms; - Recognize the importance of early diagnosis through lab work, hormone tracking, and ultrasounds to identify irregularities and improve outcomes; - Learn about lifestyle strategies like weight management, stress reduction, and avoiding environmental toxins to mitigate PCOS symptoms; and - Explore medical treatments, including ovulation-inducing medications like Clomid and Letrozole, to support fertility and symptom management.
“Definitely, [there’s] some options there. So, it is not a dead-end street when talking about PCOS, when talking about fertility. But the problem is that a lot of people don't know where the road is, and you won't know where the road is unless you're driving, right? So, what have you got to do? You got to drive to the doctor's office. You got to ask the appropriate questions and be able to be open with your doctor if they ask you, hopefully, appropriate questions, so you can give appropriate answers.” – Dr. Berry Pierre
Notable Quotes:
“One in 10 women of reproductive age are affected by PCOS…So, this isn't like a disease that very few people get. This disease affects a lot of women.” – Dr. Berry Pierre
“One of the things I do, especially when I was teaching my students, or with medical residents, I say, we don't order tests because we're hoping for an answer and then we'll kind of figure out our diagnosis. We're ordering a test…to confirm our diagnosis, which is a different ballgame. I'm not just willy-nilly ordering a test just to order it. I'm ordering that test because I assume you have this problem and I want to confirm if it's true with the results.” – Dr. Berry Pierre

So, let’s talk about myths surrounding male fertility and why it’s crucial to understand that fertility issues aren’t just a woman’s concern…
Have you ever heard of the phrases “real men don’t have fertility problems”, “age doesn’t matter for men”, or “fertility issues are a woman’s problem”?
These half-truths and misconceptions aren’t just wrong—they’re harmful. It’s a common belief, but it’s far from the truth.
In fact, 40-50% of all fertility challenges are due to male factors—and yet, myths and misinformation keep many men from understanding their role.
That’s why in this episode, we’re setting the record straight as we debunk myths, discuss how lifestyle impacts sperm health, and outline actionable steps men can take to support their fertility.
Whether you’re preparing for parenthood, supporting a partner, or just wanting to learn more, this episode will challenge what you think you know and guide you toward taking action. So, tune in now and take the first step towards informed and proactive fertility health.
Why you need to check this episode:
- Understand why fertility is not a women’s issue alone but a shared responsibility between men and women;
- Discover how age and lifestyle factors such as smoking, alcohol consumption, diet, and exercise play a crucial role in sperm health;
- Recognize the importance of regular medical checkups to identify and address potential health issues that may affect fertility; and
- Learn about interventions such as testosterone supplementation and assisted reproductive technologies (in vitro fertilization or IVF and intracytoplasmic sperm injection or ICSI) that can help address fertility challenges
“If you understand that fertility is a two-way street—that it could be a male issue or a female issue, guess what? You get to the problems and the problem-solving a lot quicker.” – Dr. Berry Pierre
Notable Quotes:
“As we age, not only can our sperm count decrease, but more importantly, we don’t have as healthy a sperm as we had when we were 18 or 20. So yeah, your body may still produce sperm…[but] it doesn’t mean that the sperm that you’re producing is actually good sperm.” – Dr. Berry Pierre
“Regular checkups need to be in your armamentarium if you want to make sure you don’t have to worry about fertility issues when you’re ready to fertilize.” – Dr. Berry Pierre
“One thing I always say in medicine—if you come to us early enough, we have some options to treat the issue…So, never fear. You just got to come and see us…The medical field is here for you, [and] your partner will be there for you as well. It’s kind of a team effort in working with fertility.” – Dr. Berry Pierre

So, let’s discuss why we should start working on our New Year's resolutions now rather than waiting until January 1st to act…
We have about five weeks left in the calendar now before the year 2024 ends. But before we start making New Year’s resolutions for 2025, I first want to ask: how did your resolutions for 2024 turn out?
Because what tends to happen when people have New Year’s resolutions is they say, “I got all of 2024 to do this thing”, but then Thanksgiving comes, and they realize, “I didn’t do that.” Thinking you have all year to work on the change you want to see happen is how the trap of failure sets into your life.
But I don’t want you to be a victim of that. That’s why in this episode, we’re gearing you up for an early start. In this week's podcast, we’ll discuss the value of planning and working on our resolutions in December, seeing the remaining weeks as an opportunity rather than a countdown.
These last five weeks are perfect for building momentum, so don’t wait for January 1st—let’s begin now. Tune into this episode, and together, let’s set ourselves up for a successful 2025.
Why you need to check this episode:
-Discover easy and simple steps to achieve success when working on your New Year’s Resolutions; -Understand why it’s a lot better that you start acting now and not wait until January 1st before working on reaching your goals; and -Recognize the importance and power of accountability in driving you toward the achievement of your goals
“Whatever that thing is, I want to make sure there is an improvement for the year 2025 [for you]. And I want you to get started now. We are not waiting until January to start this stuff. We are not waiting until January to start thinking about our New Year’s resolutions. We are not waiting until January to start thinking about the obstacles. We are not waiting until January to start holding ourselves accountable with solutions. We're not doing that, y'all. Not no more; because they don't work.” – Dr. Berry Pierre
Notable Quotes:
Quotes:
“This is a safe space. We are going to talk our way through it and then get to moving. And we're not waiting ‘til January 1st; we're not waiting for any type of ball drop to occur. No, we are going to get the game started right now. We are getting the transformation started right now. We're going to put plans into action right now.” – Dr. Berry Pierre
“When you get older, you start valuing some things a lot more, and you start realizing that you can't value them unless you're at the healthiest that you can be.” – Dr. Berry Pierre
“You have to tell someone because someone needs to hold you accountable... Accountability will push and pull and get you to the finish line like no other thing.” – Dr. Berry Pierre

So, let’s talk about the silent weight of grief—especially as it surfaces during the holiday season when everyone else seems to be celebrating…
Coping with grief is a deeply personal experience that’s often misunderstood by many. Contrary to others’ belief, there’s no one-size-fits-all approach to healing. It is a highly individualized process that for a lot of people, moving forward happens differently.
Unfortunately, this often goes unacknowledged, leading some individuals to feel pressured to move on quickly. This is because, as those around them may suggest, others seem to have already done so.
But regardless of intent, it shouldn’t be like that. There shouldn’t be a shot clock dictating how long one has to—or not to—grieve.
That’s why in this episode, we’ll cover how grief impacts each of us uniquely, why it's okay to still feel the weight of loss long after others have moved on, and why moving forward doesn’t mean leaving our memories or feelings behind.
Whether you find yourself navigating grief or supporting a loved one who is, this episode serves as a reminder that people should be allowed to cope with grief—at their own pace.
Why you need to check this episode:
- Learn how grief impacts us differently and why there is no “one-size-fits-all” approach to processing loss;
- Understand the complexities of grieving for someone with dementia, where the loss is emotional and mental rather than physical; and
- Recognize the importance of allowing yourself to cope without pressure or a timeline, embracing grief as an evolving experience
“I want us to understand that coping with the grief isn't a death sentence. It is something that we are allowed to move forward with, it is something that we are allowed to have to live with us, and it is something that we're allowed to not have a shot clock. The shot clock can be turned off when it comes time to grief.” – Dr. Berry Pierre
Notable Quotes:
Quotes:
“There [are] no books out there that says what's the appropriate time that we should be getting over things. We have to understand that for a lot of people, getting over things is going to happen in different ways.” – Dr. Berry Pierre
“Whether it be talking with a good support system like a friend or family member, or if you have access to talk with a counselor, there's certain systems, certain processes, certain ways that we can kind of help people move through all of these stages…That way may not be a one size fits all…but understand that there is a route.” – Dr. Berry Pierre
“If you're coping with it and you're living with it and you're moving forward with it, we're going in the right direction. But if it's debilitating, if it's handicapping, [or] if it's making it so that you can't do the things you need to do, this is when I think you need some help.” – Dr. Berry Pierre
“I don't want the grief to succumb. I want us to be able to cope with it, live with it, and move forward with it.” – Dr. Berry Pierre

But more often than not, people experience a sense of "holiday blues"–they feel down and out–as the holiday season comes to a close.

“I wish I could tell you that eating healthy is a passive process, but I can be a first-hand witness; it is not. We have to be very active in our approach to eating healthy, avoiding obstacles left and right.” – Dr. Berry Pierre
Notable Quotes:
Quotes:
"I want to make sure that [by] post-holiday season, we're not feeling the blues. Why do we typically feel the blues? Because we don't practice any healthy habits of eating right leading up to the holiday season." – Dr. Berry Pierre
“If you don’t want to end up in the hospital during the holidays, maybe you should probably avoid those foods that you know you shouldn’t be eating.” – Dr. Berry Pierre

So, let’s talk about sleep apnea—its seriousness and why we must stop overlooking it like it’s not a health issue that deserves our attention…
Ever wondered how something as common as snoring could be a sign of a serious health concern?
Contrary to what many people think, snoring—even when someone’s makes it so hard for you to sleep—is not merely a harmless annoyance. In some cases, it indicates sleep apnea—a condition that often gets brushed off but can have severe health implications if left untreated.
It can get as serious to the point that you’ll need a pacemaker, as the risk of sudden death is through the roof each time you go for some sleep.
However, unfortunately, many people still don’t recognize the gravity sleep apnea brings with it.
That’s why in this episode, we’ll discuss sleep apnea, some symptoms to watch for, and the profound impact it can have both on your life and health. I’ll share personal experiences and a patient’s story to highlight the importance of diagnosis and treatment. We’ll also talk about the types of sleep apnea and possible treatment options, such as the one I’m using—the CPAP machine.
So, whether you’re just curious about sleep apnea or you suspect it might be affecting you or a loved one, check out this episode, and together, let’s raise awareness about this often misunderstood disease.
Why you need to check this episode:
- Get an overview of what sleep apnea is and how serious it can get; - Understand how sleep apnea can silently wreak havoc on your health and affect numerous systems of your body if left untreated; - Recognize the importance of seeing sleep apnea as a serious health concern, way beyond just snoring; and - Hear personal anecdotes and a patient’s story that could help convince you to take action for better health
“That's just an overview of what sleep apnea [is] and the importance of understanding [that] this is a serious disease. When we think about sleep apnea, you should be just as concerned if you're thinking about heart disease…[and] diabetes. I want us to kind of elevate the status of sleep apnea, because I think a lot of times it gets brushed to the side and felt as not as significant, especially clinically. And I want to tell you—that is 100% not the case. You need to get this taken care of, especially if you're concerned about it.” – Dr. Berry Pierre
Notable Quotes:
“It's been a conversation that needs to be talked about because it is one of these diseases that really gets overlooked because we're always thinking about high blood pressure…about diabetes…about obesity…[and] about all these other things here. But a lot of times, if you don't treat the central reason why you're having these problems, you can't deal with anything else.” – Dr. Berry Pierre
“Untreated sleep apnea will make it more difficult for you and your doctor to take care of your blood pressure…of your weight…of your diabetes, and a slew of other disease process that really can't get fixed if [we] don't deal with the sleep apnea. It’s not just [a] disease that's make you snore a lot; it's not a disease that makes it so that people can't sleep next to you, no. This disease has significant effects, especially when left untreated.” – Dr. Berry Pierre
