  • Who True Freaks Episode #24: The Magician’s Apprentice and The Witch’s Familiar

After a prolonged absence, WHO TRUE FREAKS is back and ready to talk about the adventures of the greatest Time Lord from the planet Gallifrey. And this time out we’re tackling the opening episodes of the very recent series nine, “The Magician’s Apprentice” and The Witch’s Familiar”. The Peter Capaldi Doctor is up to his old tricks, travelling through time and saving those who needed to be saved…but when the person he intends to save turns out to be a young version of Davros, the creator of the Daleks, could the Doctor’s compassion lead to the creation of the most destructive force of all? Plus, just how the heck did Missy survive and why is she stopping airplanes and harrassing Clara? All of these topics and more will be discussed as Hope Mullinax, Dave Walker, Shawn Engel, and Dr. Bill Robinson discuss the two shows. Well, Shawn bows out for the second show since he hadn’t seen it at the time of recording and wanted to avoid spoilers. So, I guess…SPOILER WARNING! But now that he has seen it, he’s ready to give the show a listen, and you should do the same. So download the episode already…after six months, you know you want to!

    UPDATE!!!

As we mentioned in the show, Peter Capaldi and Craig Ferguson were in a “punk” band in the ealry 1980’s. Here is the article about it, and here is the YouTube audio of the song featured in the show.

  • Who True Freaks Episode #23: Vengeance on Varos

After much wrangling and consternation (mostly from Shag), the Who True Freaks gang is back to cover an episode featuring one of the most contentious actors to portray the Doctor, Colin Baker, the technicolor suited madman with a blue box and his incredibly fetching companion Peri. This time out Thomas Deja, Shawn Engel, The Irredeemable Shag, and first time Who True Freaks panelist Luke Jaconetti discuss the best show of the Colin Baker era, VENGEANCE ON VAROS. Yes it’s evil corporations, creepy Jabba the Hutt/Salacious Crumb offspring, and commentary on reality televison long before Simon Cowell could be the ruination the the medium. Plus there’s discussion of some of the other, perhaps better, works of Colin Baker put forth by Shag, who really wasn’t too impressed by the show. But hey, when some of the other shows you have to pick from include Timelash and The Twin Dilemma, you really have nowhere to go but up. So what are you waiting for? Download the show and prepare to la-dal-la-dal-la-dal-love it (my horrible Sil impersonation.).

  • Who True Freaks #22: Dinosaurs on a Spaceship

Join the WHO TRUE FREAKS Hope Mullinax, Shawn Engel, and special guest Bill Meeks (Greetings from Storybrooke and Legends of Gotham) as they travel to the recent past and discuss the Matt Smith classic episode, DINOSAURS…ON A SPACESHIP. Listen as Bill recounts his origin as a fan of Doctor Who before we dive into and episode that has it all…adventure, romance, comedy, robots voiced by a British comedy team, Harry Potter actors, gingers kicking ass, Indiana Jones analogues, touching parental moments, and most importantly…DINOSAURS!!! And on a SPACESHIP no less! So what are you waiting for? Download the show and get ready to check out the latest episode of WHO TRUE FREAKS!

  • Who True Freaks #21: The Caves of Androzani

Where can you find corporate machinations, politcal intrigue, and villains in black and white gimp masks? Why on the latest episode of WHO TRUE FREAKS! This time out, hosts Shawn Engel, The Irredeemable Shag, and W. Blaine Dowler are covering another Peter Davison classic episode, THE CAVES OF ANDROZANI, where the Doctor and Peri (and Peri’s very distracing…”attributes”) show up on a war torn mining planet and get caught in the crossfire of the military who is trying to subdue a rebel faction that has control over the life extending drug, Spectrox. But this time out the Doctor is somehwat sidelined as he spends most of the episode trying to save himself and Peri from Spectrox poisoning rather than righting the wrongs on the planet. Plus we finally discover just what the heck that celery stalk on the Doctor’s lapel was all about, and we get our first glimpse at the Colin Baker iteration of the Doctor (so Thomas Deja should be excited). So spend your weekend enjoying the Freaks talk about one of the highest regarded episodes of Doctor Who…right here on WHO TRUE FREAKS!

  • Who True Freaks #20: Last Christmas

Last Christmas, I gave you my hearts, but the very next day, you gave me space crabs…Which might just be a more pleasnat gift than the Wham song. Yes, rounding the year out, the Who True Freaks of Dr. Bill Robinson, Dave Walker, Hope Mullinax, and Shawn Engel talk about the 2014 Doctor Who Christmas Special, LAST CHRISTMAS. This time the Doctor and Clara encounter Santa Claus at the North Pole, and rather than having a jolly holiday with plenty of gifts and tangerines (what’s up with that?!?) they end up in a Dream Crab induced altered reality where their brains are being SUCKED DRY!!! And Danny Pink is back…much to Hope’s delight. It’s a fun episode that embodies what a good Doctor Who show should, comedy, drama, and a bit of scariness that’ll make the kids hide behind the sofa. So why not download the show and take a listen? It’ll take care of that ice cream headache you’ve been having since last week…

  • Who True Freaks #19: Battlefield

More random DOCTOR WHO goodness is ready for your listening pleasure as PROFESSOR ALAN MIDDLETON and his daughter EMILY MIDDLETON join host SHAWN ENGEL for a look at the much maligned Sylvester McCoy series, “BATTLEFIELD”. This time out the Doctor and Ace get to blow up ancient ruins, immerge from lakes, and face off against one of the hammiest knights ever to grace the television airwaves. Add to that Jean Marsh channeling Bavmorda from “Willow” and not one, BUT TWO Brigadiers, and you’ve got one heck of a fun series, that has perhaps one of the best makeup effects in the entire run. Seriously, the Destroyer was genius! So what are you waiting for? Download the show and get ready for fun on this latest episode of Who True Freaks!

  • Who True Freaks #18: The Fires of Pompeii

Today in this BLISTERINGLY HOT episode of Who True Freaks, Hope Mullinax, Shawn Engel, and The Irredeemable Shag take a look at a recent outing for the Doctor, the fourth series New Who episode, THE FIRES OF POMPEII. And why would we be covering this episode, you ask? Well, not only is it a great episode featuring the Doctor and Donna dealing with heady issues (Is it right to save people you KNOW are supposed to die?), but it also guest stars not one, not two, but three actors who all have appeared in Doctor Who in some capacity outside this episode. And the fact that one of them is Peter Capaldi gets Hope’s Geeky Girl senses tingling, causing her to dazzle us with theories of how Capaldi’s character in this episode and him portraying the Doctor are related. And Shag and Shawn relate it all back to Tom Baker Who, just to school Hope on Old Who. We know you’ll LAVA this show as it ERUPTS out of your speakers into your ears. And I promise that’s the end of the puns.
