I’ve always been fascinated with the idea of human endurance. What are we actually capable of doing? It’s almost always a lot more than we think.
At some point, I want to do a long distance bike ride. So far, the longest I’ve biked in a day is about 50 or 60 miles. And that was right here in this area, so afterward I went home and slept in my own bed.
But I’d really like to bike from here in the Tampa Bay area, across to the other side of Florida, the east coast. It would probably take me like 3 days. I love the idea of that kind of adventure.
But my guest today, Daniel, had a much bigger idea. His plan was to ride his bike across the entire US - from San Francisco all the way to New York City.
And – he started this ride without carrying any money or any food. He was going to depend on the kindness of strangers all along the way.
And that’s exactly what he did. But that’s not all – he recorded video all along the way. And he turned that into a documentary that’s won a ton of awards. So we get to see him struggling to bike up mountains, and across long stretches where he saw no one, and through some scary neighborhoods.
But my favorite part, and what made Daniel’s journey so magical, are the people he encountered along the way.

There are few forces in the world stronger than a mother protecting her baby.
If you’re outdoors and you happen to come across a mama bear, everyone knows you better not get between her and her cubs. Actually, it’s a bad idea to be anywhere near them. If you appear as any kind of a threat, it’s not gonna turn out well.
But I would say that’s just as true for human mothers. They will do anything to make sure their baby is safe – and that includes risking their own life to save their child.
Janette was a young mother. She and her husband, Greig, had a young baby – their son Alex was just 9 months old.
So Janette and Greig had just arrived home. Their little Alex was still in the back seat of the car, strapped into his car seat. Then it happened. Just minutes later, they were in the car while it was being driven by two armed kidnappers.
She wanted desperately to protect her baby, but there was nothing she could do.
Janette and her husband were locked in the trunk.

When I was a kid, I don’t think I knew anyone who had an actual security system in their home.
It just wasn’t heard of. I’m sure they existed, but really, for most typical middle-class families, you just didn’t think a lot about someone breaking into your home.
And we certainly never had the concept of a home invasion – you know, someone coming right through the front door, while you’re home and awake, with plans of theft or even violence.
But these days, if there’s a knock on the door, everyone’s suddenly on high alert. Who’s at the door? In our house, we have the doorbell camera and we also have cameras all around the house. Because answering the door – literally opening the door to your house, to a stranger – can be a really dangerous thing to do.
Annie knows this. As a young woman, she was home alone in her new place, and she heard someone knocking.
She opened the door, and immediately regretted it.

Have you ever had one of those moments in your life where your life just changed dramatically?
Like, your life is suddenly divided into two chapters – before that moment, and after that moment.
Well, that’s the kind of moment Justin had.
Justin was adopted the day after he was born. So he never knew his birth mother. He was adopted immediately into a loving family who gave him a wonderful childhood and a great start in life.
He always wondered about his birth mother, and he searched and searched for her. And at the same time, she was wondering about him, and hoping they would eventually connect again.
Then, they finally found each other. This is the story of how that happened.
And partway through our conversation, I surprised Justin with something. I love that part.
This is a Flashback episode, and Justin told this story here on the podcast way back in episode #4. A LOT has happened with Justin since then, and you’ll hear him talk all about that right after our conversation.
