SHERLOCK AND STAR TREK, Part 2: "An Automaton"

There’s a lot of fan crossover between Star Trek and author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s most famous creation, Sherlock Holmes. In fact, the world’s first consulting detective makes a few cameos in our favorite science fiction series. Robert Stek and Monica Schmidt are Star Trek fans who also happen to belong to The Baker Street Irregulars, America’s preeminent Sherlock Holmes society. They joined me to talk about Sherlock and Star Trek.

In part 2, we observe Brent Spiner (Data) and Daniel Davis' (Moriarty) performances and deduce why there is so much fan crossover between the two properties.

INTERVIEW: Tawny Newsome On Bringing Beckett Mariner to Life and What Her Future Holds in the STAR TREK Universe

Tawny Newsome is excited to be able to talk about Star Trek again now that the SAG-AFTRA strike seems to be over. I was able to monopolize a few minutes of her time to talk about her character, Beckett Mariner, in Star Trek: Lower Decks, as well as that crossover episode of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds and being in the writers room of the upcoming series Star Trek: Starlet Academy. I’m T. Rick Jones and this is your Daily Star Trek News.

INTERVIEW: Michelle Hurd On Why the SAG-AFTRA Strike and 'United We Trek' Matters

On July 13, SAG-AFTRA went on strike, walking off film and television sets and joining the WGA in demanding a square deal from producers. Nearly two months later, that deal seems as distant as ever. You know Michelle Hurd from her work as Raffi on Star Trek: Picard, but you may also know that she is the Vice President of SAG-AFTRA. She joined me to talk about the ongoing strike and the upcoming United We Trek event.

    WHAT: United We Trek!

    WHEN: September 8, 2023 from 9:30 am - 12 pm

WHERE: In LA: 5433 Melrose Ave. or in NYC: 1515 Broadway

INTERVIEW: Effects Wizard J. Alan Scott On Reimagining A Legacy 'Star Trek' Alien

The Gorn were created for an episode of Star Trek: The Original Series, with a stuntman portraying the lizard creature in an unwieldy costume. We saw one again in Star Trek: Enterprise, courtesy of some pretty bad CGI. Now they’re a recurring threat in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds where the combination of practical effects and CGI make them arguably the best-looking iteration of the species. I had a chance to talk to J. Alan Scott, co-founder of Legacy Effects, the company behind the new version of this old alien.

INTERVIEW: Director Jeff Byrd on Filming 'Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" Episode 208, "Under the Cloak of War"

The latest episode of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, “Under the Cloak of War,” is a look at the emotional consequences of war. When Klingon Ambassador Dak’Rah, known as the Butcher of J’Gal, boards the ship claiming he’s on a mission of peace, it stirs up strong emotions from the crew, many of whom are suffering from PTSD from the Federation-Klingon War. It’s a dramatic episode with a message at its heart reminiscent of some of the best episodes of the original series. I had a chance to chat with its director, Jeff Byrd, about some of the more striking moments and themes.

If you want to learn more about the tumultuous relationship between the Federation and the Klingons, check out my essay, “Trektrospective: The Evolution of Federation-Klingon Relations in Star Trek at www.dailystartreknews.com.
