Penna  A graduate of Fordham University, Robert M. Penna holds a Ph.D. in Political Science from Boston University. His new book: Braided Threads: A Historical Overview of the American Nonprofit Sector The United States today supports the strongest, most varied nonprofit sector in the world, an economic force of about $2 trillion, responsible for 5.4% of the nation’s Gross Domestic Product in 2014, and accounting that year for 10.3% of the country's private-sector workforce. Page Two Expert: Alex Brovey is the Senior Director, Gift Planning at Northwell Health Foundation in New Hyde Park, New York. Alex has worked in gift planning for twenty years at four non-profit organizations. Earlier in her career she focused on estate planning and administration as a member of the Delaware, Pennsylvania and New York bars. Alex is a past Board member and Treasurer of the National Association of Charitable Gift Planners, where she serves as Chair of its Leadership Institute. She is a President Emeritus of the Philanthropic Planning Group of Greater New York in New York City, and has been an instructor for the Planned Giving Certificate Program at Molloy College. She is a frequent lecturer across the United States on topics related to charitable giving, and has had articles published in several national publications. She followed with another successful run as an executive at Showtime Networks. Then, in 1997 Garry was named the executive director of GLAAD, one of the largest gay rights organizations in the U.S. She brings all of this experience to her work as the Principal of Joan Garry Consulting, a boutique firm that helps nonprofits across a wide variety of sectors to untangle strategic knots enabling them to have a clearer path in pursuit of their missions.  Her blog for board and staff leaders of nonprofits reaches 100,000 unique leaders.
