We live in a decidedly "therapeutic culture".
There are a million questions we could ask about the implications of this, especially as it relates to fatherhood and motherhood, but the one we focus on today is, "Is embracing this therapeutic culture maladaptive for men?"
Put another way, we discuss whether fathers are different enough from mothers that the question of therapy itself has to be broken down among gender lines.
As always, we believe fatherhood and motherhood are the anchor points of gender. The entire REASON for gender.
So, it makes sense that we talk about roles and how each member of the family could or perhaps even should approach therapy.
Hit play to find out if dads should approach therapy differently.
On this episode, we talk about:
0:00 Intro
1:25 Has therapeutic culture done some kind of damage to fatherhood?
2:48 Boys vs. girls talking about their feelings (Christina Hoff Summers Clip
5:55 Gender impact on therapy
8:04 Modern and ancient world collide over therapy

Hi, welcome to the Family Teams podcast! Our goal here is to help your family become a multigenerational team on mission by providing you with Biblically rooted concepts, tools and rhythms! Our first granddaughter is 10 days old, and we have a family story to share with you, that we hope will encourage and give hope to all of you mothers out there (and the fathers who lead family teams!).
The story you're about to hear absolutely shocked the nurse involved...but we thought it was totally normal.
It's just one more proof point to the goodness of God's ancient plan for families, and why we think the Family Teams model works so well.
This wasn't something we planned for, or even had as a goal, but our hope is that in sharing it with you, it gives you a direction and perhaps even opens your eyes for the first time to just how deeply connected you can be with the other people in your family.
On this episode, we talk about:
0:00 Intro
0:44 Why Kelsey included her mom in her birth experience
7:21 How April is processing her role as matriarch (especially with the birth of her grandchildren)
15:00 The transition from mothering a teen to mothering an adult child
17:28 How moms can start laying the groundwork for an extremely close lifelong relationship with their daughters
22:16 A daughter's encouragement to other mothers and daughters
25:55 Building a family team beyond the early years

It is SO strange that a new parenting trend emerges every 5-10 years.
For generations, there was basically just "parenting"...passed down from one generation to another.
Multi-generational wisdom, essentially...very Family Teams.
But with the disintegration of generational families and the rise of hyper-individualism, parents these days are left to come up with their own methods, focusing a little on this, then a little on that.
Not only is it dangerous to use an untested parenting method, MOST of them that come out these days (formerly in books, now often via social media influencers), are extremely secular and certainly not wise (the fear of God being the beginning of wisdom...).
Jeremy digs into this issue, and how to root yourself in a solid Biblical understanding of fatherhood and motherhood, joined by his wife April and Donna Cheung.
On this episode, we talk about:
0:00 Intro
0:48 The rise of "parenting trends"
2:35 Why modern culture has led to so many different parenting philosophies (clip)
8:30 The risks of being a young mother in the information age
19:10 Why most parenting studies are bunk and how to weigh advice
26:44 Potential for deception, especially with secular parenting books
32:37 Don't go down the "way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way of death"

One of the biggest reasons for the birth rate nosedive is that people no longer hear the positive arguments for having kids.
All they hear is the constant societal push for "freedom" being the ultimate virtue. It's led to a culture of hyper-individualism, where having kids makes absolutely no sense, because kids necessarily infringe on your freedom.
In this episode, Jeremy is joined by Tyler Graham to make the case for fatherhood from 3 different angles:
1. The Benefits for You
2. The Benefits For Your Family/Business/Marriage
3. Your Duty To Have Kids
Dive in, and remember that one of the major ways you can impact your own kids and community is by constantly telling and showing everyone how great fatherhood and motherhood truly is.
On this episode, we talk about:

00:31 Making the Case for Fatherhood
02:35 The Best Possible Relationship (Jordan Peterson on Parenting)

Jeremy and April Pryor are joined by Annalisa Barraza to talk about Annalisa's book, You Are Because He Is.
Annalisa has worked for Family Teams for almost 5 years, so it's a joy to have her on the show in this capacity and dive into the power of speaking blessings over our children.
The book emphasizes the importance of speaking the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus over children to help shape their identity in Christ.
This episode also explores the cultural challenges of identity for young women, the role of family in shaping identity, and the significance of grounding identity in Christ rather than emotions or cultural pressures.
On this episode, we talk about:

The modern culture offers no wisdom when it comes to running a family.
In fact, it's designed to burden and disrupt God's good design for family.
In this episode, Jeremy sits down with Justin Kershaw, who's modelled much of his family life around the Family Teams principles. They discuss the 3 major levers Justin has pulled to successfully lead his family in relationships, faith, and business:
- Implementing a weekly Sabbath
- Integrating kids into the business
- Seeing birth order as an intentional gift from God
Justin Kershaw is a husband, father of 5 daughters, and entrepreneur. Make sure to check out the company he runs with his family, Sow Strong Food! (link below)

1:00 Justin's mission, vision, and 5 daughters
7:31 Implementing a weekly Sabbath rhythm
15:10 Integrating your kids into your business

Did Protestants miss something when it comes to contraception?
What about hanging our faith on a set of very defined propositions (as opposed to actions and deep inner change)?
This episode with Jeremy Pryor and Phil Cotnoir challenges a couple of oft ignored areas of growth in the Protestant church, by hearing from a couple of influential non-Christians and reacting to some fairly accurate critiques being level against the church.
We can learn about family and faith from those on the borders of Christianity or Christian ideas...but we should also be able to frame the debate properly and not be overly influenced by liberal social experiments just because the culture seems to agree with them.
On this episode, we talk about:
0:00 Intro
2:27 Naval Ravikant on contraception and family
5:58 Reaction to Naval's 3 points
19:18 How should Protestants approach the conversation of kids for young married couples?
22:22 Personal preference vs. theological question
24:40 Jordan Peterson's problem with Protestantism
32:39 Should Jordan Peterson risk being categorized as a Christian?

Jeremy is joined today by Jonathan Holmes to talk about why identity is such a hot topic today, and what it means for us as Christian parents of kids facing enormous cultural pressure.
How do we give our kids a gospel-centric identity in Christ? Do we need to spend more time and effort building a family identity to combat peer-pressured identity formation? How can the church start to take back ground on gender, identity, and the Christian sexual ethic?
These topics are hard to talk about, because so many people want to focus solely on the exceptions to the rule, and forgo talking about the general teaching, so it was a blessing to wrestle deeply with these issues with Jonathan.
This conversation needs to be happening way more often, especially for those of us with children being impacted by an outside world heavily influenced by the enemy.
On this episode, we talk about:
0:00 Intro
1:38 Why is "identity" such an important topic today?
4:32 Identity in the gospel
10:06 Peers vs family in the identity-formation process
14:17 Practical tips to ground your children in a Christ-centered identity
19:30 Can family identity cure a lack of identity culturally?
30:07 Competing ideas about gender, and how the Church should respond
35:47 Family vs individual consequences of "gender identity"
41:57 The narrow sexual ethic of the Bible

Jeremy is joined by his wife April, and friends Michelle Akrami and Brittany Stewart to discuss the story of Rebekah, Isaac's wife, in Genesis.
How does this story of a mother and her two sons impact our view of motherhood? Did God work through her trying to do things "her way", or did God work in spite of her attempt to ensure her favorite son was blessed?
Whatever the implications, we hope this episode gives you pause to think through what the meta narrative is telling us, and allows you to approach Scripture in a thoughtful and curious way to really let it sink in.

0:54 First Pryor granddaughter!
2:30 Rebekah as a mother in Genesis
11:55 Moms react to Rebekah

How does a father maintain influence in his son's life amidst the chaos of social media, friends, and sports?
Today Jeremy is joined by Stephen Meeks, author of Save The Boys. Stephen helps fathers take their sons through an initiatory rite of passage so that they become men in the best sense of the word.
This process is powerful enough to eliminate the "rebellious teenage years" in a family, because it fosters such connection and responsibility.
