The guys from the band Brother Elsey join us (all 4 of them) to talk about their upcoming debut record, albums from 2017 (including "White Noise" that I consider my 2nd favorite album of that year), Phoebe Bridgers, basements in L.A., The Doors, Setlist.fm stats, Spanaway & Centralia Washington, and how do we get Noah to listen to this episode and have him answer some of our questions and....AND...invite Brother Elsey to open some shows for him?

And hopefully we can pull off a Kasey and Shawn concert in Florida in February. Who wants to join us for that?

Episode 357: Episode 357 - ABC's "The Lexicon of Love" with Jon Lamoreaux

Big kudos to Jon for always being on the bench so to speak. You know what happens when we have a Jon episode...yep...guest reschedule. We did this one on two days notice and we didn't skip a beat as it's an album we've been listening to for 40 years.

We have an unanimous top song! What?!? Any guesses what song?

And, you're welcome that I didn't include a sound clip for "The Theme from Mantrap."

Episode 356: Episode 356: A discussion with Mindy Smith

From Ben: I fly solo for this interview with Mindy Smith. I could have used Wayne to tell me that my microphone wasn't working properly (it might be time for a new laptop). Mindy and I talk about her excellent new album "Quiet Town" and other topics like being Geminis, Neilson Hubbard (who produced "Quiet Town"), Susan Ashton, writing sad songs, reading the comments, breaking the rules (and how it paid off).  I love her picks for 5 favorite albums including The Sundays and another guest talks about "Poses" from Rufus Wainwright!

Songs include (from "Quiet Town" unless otherwise noted):

    Jericho

    Every Once in a While

One Moment More (from debut titled "One Moment More")

What Love Can Do (from "Stupid Love")

    Something To Write in Stone

Episode 354: Episode 354: Paul & Linda McCartney’s “Ram” with Ronny Tibbs

Ronny Tibbs joins us to discuss the second Paul McCartney record (this one with wife Linda) - the underappreciated "Ram" from 1971. Plenty of other discussion including Myspace and Livejournal, tying audio and video into an EP, Steely Dan, George Martin's absence, McCartney solo records (I might have a hot take) and 70's solo Beatles records, "John Lennon can't be the only person Paul's mad at," fantasy milkshakes, ukulele, and Wayne says "Sublime has never done anything bad."

Michael Citro of Michael’s Record Collection (and occasional concert buddy) joins us to discuss the heavy metal classic “The Number of the Beast” from Iron Maiden.  Plenty of other discussion including gallops, Vikings, seeing Crowded House together, mommy and daddy are fighting again, metal albums we own (or once owned), backmasking, lyrical controversies and lawsuits, and we determine that the UK charts are weird.

And, yes, I went out of order of releasing episodes lately. Sorry. Or something.

Episode 352: Episode 352: Young the Giant discusses their album “Mind Over Matter”

Sameer Gadhia and Eric Cannata of Young the Giant join us to discuss their sophomore album “Mind Over Matter” that is celebrating its 10th anniversary!   We talk about the production of the album, sequencing, could they have made “American Bollywood” earlier in their career, vocal acrobats, misheard lyrics (Sienna?), getting “Teachers” and “Daydreamer” back into the live setlists, finding out your song is going viral on Tik Tok, and more.  We love these guys!

Episode 351: Episode 351: Jocelyn Si of Walt Disco discusses Rufus Wainwright’s “Poses”

Jocelyn Si of Walt Disco and guest co-host Jason Earle (of The Marinade” podcast) join me in discussing “Poses” from Rufus Wainwright.  Plenty of other discussion including finding one’s voice in college, getting ready to tour with OMD in the states (in 2025, not in 2024), Bronski Beat, Nepo Babies, Death of Venice, welcome moments of horns, and "In A Graveyard" is I think the best Billy Joel song not written or sung by Billy Joel.  Prove me wrong.

I won't guarantee that you'll like the album. It was a slow burn for me. This one takes time to grow on you and, I get it, sometimes we don't have that time to invest in an album that maybe you're only marginally interested in.  But, I felt rewarded in taking the time to absorb “Poses.”

Episode 350: Episode 350: Alice Wallace discusses Rilo Kiley’s “More Adventurous”

Guests Alice Wallace and little brother Dave Montgomery join us for this week's episode to discuss "More Adventurous" from Rilo Kiley. Plenty of other conversation including the LA country scene, Mule Kick Records, Post Malone, the Bluebird, male guilt, Jenny Lewis, alternative radio in 2004, beeps and boops, and we still don’t know the meaning of 11/11/46.  Jenny needs to come on the show to explain!

And, we weren't very nice about "Ripchord" which, on any album, would be a song that I'd probably really dig. Sorry Blake! Give a listen and let me know your thoughts!
