Global CTO of Greenpeace, Priscilla Chomba, shares how to design for digital inclusion

Greenpeace is the largest environmental organization in the world with over 3 million members. Living in Nairobi, Priscilla Chomba-Kinywa is their global CTO. She also shaped tech at UNICEF, the World Food Programme, and ActionAid. Many of the communities she works with don’t speak tech. Priscilla is their tech translator, helping them access our modern digital world. Discover how to design with collectives in mind, working towards digital inclusion.

According to the UN, more than a third of the world's population have never used the internet. In 2020, in Africa alone half the population had no access to the internet. Why should this concern you? Because a fair and free internet benefits us all. Access to global technologies can save lives. It helps people thrive; to live to their full potential. And it empowers collectives to speak out, to rise up, to resist. To help us all do better as a species.

This episode came together in partnership with The Next Web, Europe's leading tech festival. It’s where you can meet founders, firestarters, and VCs. Year round you can follow TNW’s opinionated coverage of tech news that matters on thenextweb.com.

And we want to hear from you too! We’re researching what makes communities, memberships, and movements so powerful. Or in short, how to better design for belonging. You can help by sharing your own experiences in our first listener survey.

Go to memberful.design/community to complete the survey. It only takes a minute to share your wisdom and it’s completely anonymous. We’ll share takeaways on a future show. So keep listening and let’s learn together.

From Paris to preppy, Avery Trufelman unmasks our collective beliefs about design with Articles of Interest

Memberful Design is a show about firestarters sparking initiatives that have a lasting impact. Formerly known as Verwondering, leading design podcast of the Netherlands. Now, we’re bringing this award-winning series to the international stage in English.

For years, Avery Trufelman was part of 99% Invisible, a wildly popular show on design that’s been around forever. She helped creator Roman Mars tell stories about how the world gets built and where ideas come from. There, Avery created a series herself that blew everyone away: Articles of Interest, a podcast about the history of what we wear and what we say with the clothes that cover our bodies.

Now, let’s embrace the things that are invisible because of their everydayness and celebrate new beginnings — a new, independent season of Articles of Interest and the launch of Memberful Design. What can we learn about telling a good story and crafting the future, from someone who has radio in her blood and design on her mind?

And we want to hear from you too! We’re researching what makes communities, memberships, and movements so powerful. Or in short, how to better design for belonging. You can help by sharing your own experiences in our first listener survey.

How designing for Marvel films inform our future, with John LePore

John LePore changed how we imagine the future of technology, with Tony Stark on his side. As the principal creative director of Perception, the Emmy-nominated design lab from New York, he has pioneered UI in films for the past 16 years. Is design spiritual? Pentagram’s Eddie Opara in a What Design Can Do special

He’s a partner at Pentagram, a senior critic at Yale, an Englishman in New York, a designer that codes, and a valued member of the AGI. At 50, Eddie Opara is exactly the same age as Pentagram itself. It’s the largest independent design firm in the world. All of its 23 partners create. And if a partner is not doing so well, it’s equated. That’s why Opara refers to Pentagram as a dysfunctional, but wonderful family.

On the eve of Eddie's departure to the US, his father said to him "Design is spiritual. It's a way of life." He chewed on that phrase for 26 years. Listen to the show to to get a better understanding of what his father meant and how it can inspire your own endeavours.

Just do it! The New Institute’s Aric Chen calls for design experiments

This is an international edition of Verwondering, recorded in English. Our guest is Chinese-American author and curator Aric Chen. He’s the new general and artistic director of The New Institute, that weirdly intriguing place for design and digital culture, with one of the largest architecture archives in the world.

As globalization brought us a climate crisis that we’re just now beginning to fully understand, we find ourselves with a globe that isn’t the borderless adventure land we once hoped it would be. In this episode, Chen shares his belief that manifestos are part of how we got into the mess that we're in. For too long we have been beguiled by their deceptive clarity. Instead, Chen shares his passionate plea for experimentation in design.

Chen studied architecture and anthropology at UC Berkeley, followed by design history at Cooper Hewitt in New York. On a whim he moved to China and was the creative director of the Beijing Design Week. He built a collection from scratch for M+, a brand new museum in Hong Kong. For the past 13 years, he lived happily in China and had no intention of leaving Shanghai. What drew this explorer to a young institution in Europe that nevertheless has a long history; a story that he has admired for years?

In Dutch, Verwondering means Wonderment. Every episode, Harald Dunnink talks to other designers and creative directors about the impact of their work. From artists to curators, together they explore what makes a design meaningful.

Visueel verzet!

Design is toekomstmuziek.
