• Before Christmas, some Megaphone customers saw a significant decrease in download numbers. “Something seems off”, one told us, “...and I can’t get a straight answer as to why.” The company has now sent a message to users saying that they’d found a bug; and that it’s fixed - affected dates are Nov 21 to Jan 13. Payouts were unaffected.
• It’s emerged that one of those laid-off by TuneIn this week was Steve Gaysinskiy, who was responsible for maintaining TuneIn’s integrations with different partners. It was the latest in a series of unreported layoffs at the company, which still offers a podcast directory in spite of not accepting new shows since February last year.

• Exclusive: On Air Fest has revealed its 2025 schedule, which it calls the most expansive lineup yet. The event, between Feb 19-21 in and around Brooklyn NY, will include more than eighty performances, podcast tapings, panel conversations and workshops. Among the third wave of featured talent announced today is Anderson Cooper, Jemele Hill and Anna Martin. There is also an invite-only Podcast Business Summit with Bloomberg’s Ashley Carman. This will be the event’s eighth year. Tickets are available on the website.
• Podcast monetisation company Audioboom published a 2024 Trading Update. In 2024, the company beat analyst forecasts to show an EBITDA profit of $3.4mn. Total revenue for the year was up by 13% to $73.4mn. The company has signed new content partnerships and renewed existing ones, but also managed to reduce minimum guarantee obligations by more than $3mn. The company’s CEO, Stuart Last, joins us in the Podnews Weekly Review this Friday.
• For the first time, the Australian Podcast Ranker has a clear, uncontested #1. ARN’s iHeart is number one for podcasting in podcast publishers and in sales representation. It comes as the BBC, represented by ARN’s iHeart, joins the Australian Podcast Ranker for the first time. The BBC is the tenth biggest participating publisher, with 3.3mn downloads. (The ranker is calculated using monthly listeners; the #1 publisher for monthly downloads remains the ABC, who’s podcasts are commercial free in the country.)

• Radio and podcast directory service TuneIn has apparently made another 25 layoffs this week. Earlier this month, TuneIn erroneously removed a number of radio stations in the UK; and as Podnews covered in December, the company hasn’t accepted new podcasts for almost twelve months after multiple rounds of layoffs. Along with the TuneIn app, companies like Amazon, Apple, Google and many auto manufacturers rely on TuneIn’s directory.

• The Women in Podcasting Awards has a new name for 2025 - The Women Podcasters Awards. The awards start receiving nominations in February - but are currently looking for sponsors.
• Vox Media has made a number of redundancies. It’s unclear how many impact podcasting at the company. Meanwhile, Semafor says that This American Life is planning to reduce staff, and has also quietly changed its “about” page, revising its audience down from 4mn to 3mn.
• What’s in your wallet? Is it helping itself to your affiliate money? It’s not just Honey who has been stealing affiliate codes; Capital One’s Shopping browser extension has been doing much the same thing, according to a lawsuit filed this week - if you’re asking listeners to use a promo code when buying a product, chances are that Capital One is rewriting that code as their own. • Here’s a secret. YouTube Music plays podcasts. No, real podcasts, via open RSS and everything. • New on Airwave: SpyCast from the International Spy Museum is back with new host Sasha Ingber. She'll bring you the latest insights and intriguing tales from spies, secret agents, and covert communicators, with a focus on how this secret world reaches us all in our everyday lives.
• James O’Brien Daily is launched this week by the UK broadcaster LBC - taking O'Brien's three hour broadcast show and producing a 60-minute version for podcast. (For all the "pivot to video", posts of highlights of O'Brien's show have done well on YouTube for years).
• The BBC World Service and CBC have launched The Con: Kaitlyn’s Baby today. A young mother called Kaitlyn tells tales of rape, baby loss, and even a coma. Many try to help her. Then the truth comes out – it’s all lies. You can listen to the whole thing on BBC Sounds and CBC True Crime Premium; and it's available weekly on open RSS.
• A new series in the Monster true-crime podcast franchise, Monster: BTK, launches today from Tenderfoot TV and iHeartMedia. It's the sixth season, and focuses on "BTK", the true story of Dennis Rader, known as the BTK Killer (Bind, Torture, Kill), who murdered at least 10 people in Kansas between 1974 and 1991.

• Give us your money. Triton Digital’s Sharon Taylor writes her “short list of very polite demands — goals, really — for the podcast industry in 2025”. One of her demands that we’ll absolutely back her up with: that “Spotify, YouTube or Apple release useful industry data.” We’ve been asking these companies this for years (and suggesting some data points we know they have). Weirdly, they never seem to read that bit of our email. All three companies also don’t use IAB podcast measurement guidelines.
• Kast Media’s bankruptcy rolls on:
  • Document 264 (Jan 2) claims, again, that virtually every creditor has consented to the settlement plan, except an objection from Arcadian Vanguard, the company behind Jim Cornette’s podcasts.
  • Bankruptcy is expensive. Document 277 (Jan 7) was a legal bill from Kast Media’s lawyers for the last six months for more than $86,000.
  • This bankruptcy will be more expensive yet. Document 288 (Jan 8) is a further 341 pages of legal objections from former Kast employees, including 67 references to case law.
