• The IAB has released v2.2 of the Podcast Measurement Guidelines. It’s the first new set of guidelines in over three years. To help understand what’s changed, we’ve prepared a summary of changes between v2.1 and v2.2, and between the public consultation vs final. One change is the removal of Spotify as a contributing company: Spotify left the IAB earlier this year.
  • One significant addition is on page 7: “To claim compliance with these guidelines, an organization must go through the IAB Tech Lab certification process and get listed on the IAB Tech Lab website.” This is, perhaps, to clarify podcasts hosts claiming they’re compliant.
  • To help, our podcast hosts page now lists the version of IAB Podcast Measurement Guidelines that each podcast host is certified to, and the date of that certification.
• Apple Podcasts has added a curated Wellness category to its app - you’ll see it in the search page. Featuring a curated collection of health, fitness and wellness shows, it’s part of Mental Health Awareness Month. The category curates episodes, shows and creators; subtopics reflect the evolving definition of what it means to be well today including: Mood, Sleep, Relationships, Meditation, Movement and Gratitude.

• 69% of consumers say advertising in “disconcerting” news has no negative effect on how they perceive a brand, according to IAB CEO David Cohen.
• Dovetail, PRX’s podcast publishing and monetization platform, has unveiled a set of new features and functionality.
• Podscribe has announced an integration with Rocker Box, a multi-touch attribution company. It allows advertisers to integrate podcast performance with social media, email marketing, and other channels.

• For the first time, Spotify is now the most popular podcast platform by downloads, according to Buzzsprout’s global download statistics. Spotify slipped in front of Apple Podcasts for the first time, across Buzzsprout’s 124,000 active shows in April.
  • But isn’t Spotify #1 anyway? Yes, but for listeners, not for downloads: until now, at least. It’s a notable achievement for Spotify, since Apple Podcasts also auto-downloads by default; Spotify doesn’t. (However, unlike Apple TV and Apple Music, Apple Podcasts is not available on Android.)
• We have a date: Google Podcasts is to close, globally, on June 23 (according to an email sent to a UK user). July 29 is the end date for users to export subscriptions.
  • The closure leaves the Android platform without a natural default podcast app (we recommend either Antennapod or Pocket Casts). Apple Podcasts isn’t available on Android.
• Apple Podcasts Connect will be down for scheduled maintenance on May 11, from 6.00am PT for up to two hours.
  • We know what we’d be hoping Apple is doing in that downtime (see above), but the realistic answer is probably nothing more interesting than a man with a beard doing a database migration.

• Libsyn Ads reports a slight drop in average podcast CPM to $21.75 last month, down 0.9% monthly, 4.5% yearly. The company is speaking at the IAB Podcast Upfronts next week.
• The Kast Media bankruptcy hearing will now be heard on May 28.
• Spreaker is now the #2 podcast hosting company by new episode releases, according to Livewire. (Since Spreaker now supports podping, Livewire can more reliably see all new episodes released on the platform). Spotify for Podcasters is still the most popular; the rest of the top five are Buzzsprout, Omny Studio and Podbean.
• Podtrac is now measuring more than 10% of all new episodes, according to data from Livewire. Spreaker has a Podtrac tracking code on almost a third of shows.
• Matt Medeiros writes “YouTube is not the saviour you’re looking for”, cautioning against YouTube “swallowing up another piece of the open web”.

• When listening to ad-supported audio, Americans are spending more than three times longer with the radio than with podcasts, according to “The Record”, new data from Nielsen and Edison Research. However, for younger listeners (18-34), time spent with podcasts and radio are nearly equal, at 37% vs 45%.
• Podcast ad spending climbed 29% year-on-year in Q1/24, according to a new report from Magellan AI. The free report also covers details of which categories are growing, how genres compare in ad load, and the most common place for ads in episodes.
• In London, podcast production house Viral Tribe has acquired Soho Radio and its podcast business, SRP Studios. Terms weren’t given; SRP Studios are used by a number of large clients including the BBC, Stephen Fry and Gillian Anderson.

The New Zealand Podcasting Summit, May 11 2024 — The NZ Podcasting Summit is an annual get together for Aotearoa’s podcast producers, presenters, practitioners, & providers. This is an annual day-long event focusing on meeting, sharing, & learning.

• SiriusXM released its Q1/24 financial earnings. The numbers are down for satellite radio and for Pandora; but Chris Peterson looks at the numbers from a podcast point of view, and discovers a bright lining: podcast revenue was up 22% year-on-year, and programmatic podcast revenue has almost doubled.
• Only 12% of people in India are listening to podcasts, says new research from UNPAC Research and Ideabrew Studios. The study highlights the growth opportunity in the country: 78% of existing podcast consumers only discovered podcasts less than a year ago.
• In Dec 2021, the National Association for the Deaf took SiriusXM to court for failing to provide transcripts. Lawyers on each side have argued ever since; and it shows no sign of being settled any time soon: the ruling is now expected after May 2025, according to court papers filed yesterday.
  • Meanwhile, transcripts are available for all shows from Apple Podcasts, for 2.5mn episodes in open RSS, and live captions are also available on most devices.
• Beacon promises “trending podcast topics in your inbox”. The tool crawls podcast feeds and transcribes shows.
• The NZ Podcasting Summit is less than two weeks away - the event, in Auckland, is on Sat May 11, with speakers from across New Zealand. It’s not too late for tickets; and while it’s scheduled to end at 5.45pm, we know that the discussion continues into the night at a local pub.
• Captivate has launched a set of integrations with YouTube onto podcast websites and for supporting podcast players.

• Reflector is a new project from Andy Mills and Matt Boll - the producers behind The Daily, Rabbit Hole, Caliphate and The Witch Trials of J.K. • A new season of Possible launches today, with entrepreneur, investor, and co-founder of LinkedIn Reid Hoffman. The show's now always-on, with guests including Italian chef and restaurateur Massimo Bottura and renowned podcaster and journalist Kara Swisher, and Reid's chief of staff Aria Finger will also be asking Reid the questions too. Today's episode is with the CTO of Microsoft, Kevin Scott.

• Last weekend, the Black Effect Podcast Festival took place in Atlanta GA, USA.
• Plans from the BBC to take ads on podcasts in the UK will “drain advertising away from journalism”, says former BBC News head James Harding. The Editor of Tortoise was speaking to UK politicians. In the same committee, Spiked, a libertarian web magazine, revealed that a brand-safety tool has recently flagged the publication, causing a significant dip in revenue.

• Buzzsprout has made improvements to its Buzzsprout Ads product, allowing advertisers to approve individual podcasts.

The Tech Stuff

• PocketCasts has added support for Websub and Podping, so new episodes should appear almost instantly as soon as you publish them (from a websub or podping-compatible podcast host).
• “Got bored and decided to see if I could make a podcast player in an evening”. Ryan Morrison produced PodPlaza, and posts his code, in a LinkedIn post. It’s PHP and JavaScript.
• Is Apple’s Messages app the latest new podcast player? Not really - but it does play podcasts. Send someone on Messages a link to a Podnews news page (like this) it renders with the image, headline, and a little audio button - which, when pressed, plays the linked audio. It looks quite neat. It uses the og:audio meta tag, part of the Open Graph protocol, which is supported in the Messages app on iPhone and MacOS.
  • Captivate has rolled out support for it. Podpage also now supports it for any podcast episode page, like this one.
  • This will appear as AppleCoreMedia in your podcast host’s logs.

• Gloriously Unready back for a third season today from Charlotte Foster Podcasts - aiming to bridge the gap between public perception and the private struggles and victories of transgender people. The show was shortlisted in the Independent Podcast Awards last year.
• Candy Is Dandy: The Candy Review Podcast is approaching its two-year anniversary - the show that has covered candies from Snickers to Toblerone and peach rings, it's a show that gives a candy's history and a review.
