    Interview with Dr Shantanu Chakrabartty

    Dr Shantanu Chakrabartty is a professor at the McKelvey School of Engineering at Washington University in St Louis.

    Dr Chakrabartty's research seeks to approach fundamental limits of energy efficiency, sensing and resolution. We talk about self-powered sensors, cyborg insects, and thermodynamically-driven circuits.     • Dr Shanthi Pavan is a Professor of Electrical Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology, Chennai
    • Dr. Pavan is the recipient of the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Award in Engineering Sciences (2012), IEEE Circuits and Systems Society Darlington Best Paper Award (2009), the Swarnajayanthi Fellowship (2010, from the Government of India) , the Young Faculty Recognition Award from IIT Madras (2009, for excellence in teaching) , the Technomentor Award from the India Semiconductor Association (2010) and the Young Engineer Award from the Indian National Academy of Engineering (2006).
    • He has been the Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems: Part I - Regular Papers (2014-2015), and earlier served on the editorial board of the IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems Part II - Express Briefs (2006-2007).
    • He has served as a Distinguished Lecturer of the IEEE Solid State Circuits Society, and on the technical program committee of the International Solid-State Circuits Conference (ISSCC).

    Interview with Dr Albert Theuwissen
    • Dr Albert Theuwissen is CEO and Founder of Harvest Imaging
    • Since 2001 he has been a part-time professor at TU Delft where he coaches PhD students researching CMOS image sensors.
    • He received his Ph.D. degree from KU Leuven in 1983.
    • Worked at Philips Research Laboratories in Eindhoven where he became head of the department of Imaging Devices in 1991
    • CTO at DALSA Corp and later Chief Scientist at DALSA Semiconductors
    • He is a prolific researcher with 200+ technical papers and several patents to his name.
    • His book 'Solid-State Imaging with Charge-Coupled Devices' (1995) is still considered one of the main text books in solid-state imaging.
    • Together with his peers, Eric Fossum and Nobukazu Teranishi, he founded the International Image Sensor Society, a non-profit organization to stimulate sharing of technical knowledge in the field of digital image capturing.
    • He has received the SMPTE's (Society for Motion Pictures and Television Engineers) Fuji Gold Medal for his contributions in research, development and education in the field of solid-state image capturing. In 2010 he was elected to be the 'Electronic Imaging Scientist of the Year'. In 2013 he received the Exceptional Service Award of IISS and in 2014 the SEMI Award.

    Interview with Dr Gert Cauwenberghs
    • Dr Gert Cauwenberghs is Professor of Bioengineering and Co-Director of the Institute for Neural Computation at UC San Diego, La Jolla CA.
    • Received his Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering from CalTech in 1994 and undergraduate in his native Brussels in 1988.
    • Previously Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Johns Hopkins University, and Visiting Professor of Brain and Cognitive Science at MIT.
    • Co-founded Cognionics Inc. and chairs its Scientific Advisory Board.
    • His research focuses on micropower biomedical instrumentation, neuron-silicon and brain-machine interfaces, neuromorphic engineering, and adaptive intelligent systems.
    • He received the NSF Career Award in 1997, ONR Young Investigator Award in 1999, and Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers in 2000. He was a Francqui Fellow of the Belgian American Educational Foundation, and is a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) and the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering. He served IEEE in a variety of roles including as Distinguished Lecturer of the IEEE Circuits and Systems Society, as General Chair of the IEEE Biomedical Circuits and Systems Conference (BioCAS 2011, San Diego), as Program Chair of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Conference (EMBC 2012, San Diego), and as Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE Transactions on Biomedical Circuits and Systems.
