PonderMed. Breaking down the big ideas in healthcare.
Captain Alexander Jolly and Captain Dave Fielding are commercial airline pilots. I met them through Project Wingman, a pandemic-induced collaboration between the UK aviation industry and the NHS. For the last few months they (along with a few of their colleagues) have been helping us train. Specifically, they are debriefing and writing up human factors performances (overseen by clinical faculty) in a multi-specialty/disciplinary in situ simulation programme. The project has had a hugely positive impact. This is a recording of Alex, Dave and me discussing the project at our weekly hospital Grand Round. Robbie @Ponder_Med (twitter) @pondermed (instagram)

We met up over a coffee in the Whittington Hospital "First Class Lounge" and compared notes on our respective professions. In particular we discussed human factors and simulation training. Alex recently attended a sim in the Emergency Department which you can read about here.
This one is a corker!

Graham Cooke is a Professor of Infectious Diseases at Imperial College London and member of the WHO Essential Medicines Committee. His research has focused on HIV, TB and viral hepatitis. He is currently working on multiple large scale COVID-19 research projects.
This is the second of a two-parter with Graham. In this episode we discuss the COVID-19 testing landscape and some of the work he's involved with in this area, including REACT and DNAnudge.
Cheers everyone. Robbie @Ponder_Med (twitter) @pondermed (instagram)

This is the first of two pods I've recorded with Lt. Col. Dave Grossman - a former US Army Ranger, paratrooper, and Psychology Professor.
He is the author of On Combat: The Psychology and Physiology of Deadly Conflict in War and in Peace; a book that describes coping strategies for the physiological and psychological effects of violence for people forced to kill in their line of work.
On Combat has become a popular book in the Emergency Medicine community. It turns out there are plenty of parallels between the sharp-end of healthcare and the battlefield. This podcast put On Combat on the EM map.
This is my talk titled My Mental Toughness Manifesto which On Combat had a huge influence on.
In this first episode we discuss the relationship between physiological arousal and performance, and the concept of stress inoculation.
Enjoy! Robbie Ponder_Med
This is the second of a two-parter (part 1 here) I’ve recorded with Simon Fleming (@OrthopodReg) where we take a deep dive into his work at the recently “hibernated” London Nightingale Hospital. In this one we chat about what might have been done better.
Simon is an orthopaedic registrar, #MedEd PhD, and man behind the #HammerItOut campaign (which you can listen to us discuss here).

Professor Mahdad Noursadeghi is a clinician scientist at UCL and consultant in Infectious Diseases at UCLH. He has a huge research portfolio, including extensive work in HIV and TB immunology.
He has recently put the majority of his usual work on hold in order to throw himself (and his laboratory) at the COVID 19 research effort.
We chat about COVID's impact on science and the scientific community, some of the COVID projects he's involved with including ISARIC and PERISKOPE, and the potential impact of this disease in TB and HIV hotspots.

What is "Classic COVID"? CXR vs CT chest? Should we be getting more CTPAs? I chat to Dr. Sam Hare (@lungdiagnosis) about what COVID 19 looks like on imaging, along with some other interesting stuff including the crucial role of the radiographer in this pandemic.
Some cool stuff he's written: Covid 19: Is CT scanning ready to answer the diagnostic call?
Lesson's from the frontline of the COVID-19 outbreak
Much love everyone Robbie @Ponder_Med
I chat to Professor Hugh Montgomery about what has surprised him most about COVID 19. We also discuss the implications of this crisis for evidence-based medicine and the climate emergency, and touch on the PPE situation.
Sending love and positivity to everybody at this challenging time.
