Let's Talk Filmmaking is a podcast for anyone in the filmmaking industry - from the writer to the editor. We’ll talk about how filmmakers like you started their business, where they are in their business, and how they got to that point. We’ll also discuss what’s happening in the industry, tech & gear, and solutions to problems filmmakers go through on a daily basis.
Knowing and understanding film theory is an element of film that all filmmakers should have an interest in. Because "Filmmaking Classes & Tutorials" are becoming more accessible online. You will find that the understanding of Film Theory may be one of the elements that these courses or tutorials are lacking. We talk with Coty Lewis who is one of the hosts of "Reel Inspectors". Film Production work may be pretty slow because of Covid but the bills still have to be paid. Every month more and more businesses find the courage or take the risks of opening during the pandemic so finding freelance work may be what you need to do while you wait on your next big film. Brandon & Bee talk about how they are currently finding and handling new clients and how they prepare for their shoots.

Howard University graduate Tracey Renee produced her 4th short film "Untested Love" in 2018. Her thesis film became her first short film with a big production crew and she had to create while battling lupus. We get a chance to learn about her background in theater and her love for scripted television which helped her find herself in the film industry. We also talk about she picked her actors and what it was like to produce and direct her first film working with so may like minded filmmakers. I asked her if Howard prepared her for the film. I loved her answer.

Disclaimer: In this episode we do talk about serious subjects like perspectives on race, cancel culture, and Tyler Perry. We highly recommend listening to the whole episode.
Dother Sykes joins us in this episode and as a constantly working black actor we pick his brain and get his opinions on how he thinks Hollywood is doing in terms of representation of African Americans. We dig into the darkest parts of his acting career and we talk about how big names in the AA community are seen or being treated in Hollywood.

Stepping out and producing your first short film can be exhilarating and scary at the same time. Jason Woods with Sisu Studios produced his first short that he wrote last year. He shot it days before his area went into lock down due to the virus. We talk about the specific needs Jason looked for while producing his film. We also learn how Jason builds a crew and created a short film he feels will help make it easier for more filmmakers like him to create a film like "Broken Boy".

Crew or no crew? When does that become a question? In this episode, we chat with Jolisa, the owner of Dream Loud Creations. If you're like Jolisa, you might've had to hire a few extra hands to help make a client's product come to life. Have you ever been asked to show up to a shoot just to hang around in case a friend needs some help and guidance during the shoot? Were you also mistaken as your friend's significant other or date? We have a story like that and more in this week's episode.

In a time when anyone can pick up a smartphone and shoot a music video. Some may fear that the art in shooting music videos may be drifting away. Zaria with "Rollin Filmz Productions" often shoots run&gun, so we ask where her creativity comes from and what does she do to make sure her work is quality and professional.

Like many filmmakers, you've probably thought about getting your FAA Drone license. With the laws getting stricter each year it would make sense to think to pick up your license along with that drone you've been dreaming about. In this episode, we chat with Craig Beilby, and ask him about his experience taking the FAA test for the first time. You'll also hear crash stories and how easy a drone can cause a catastrophe in the wrong hands.

Ever been told you need to find and stick with a niche? Listen to how one creative/filmmaker continued to step outside of his box from one industry to another, and how it helped him become a frequent cast member on "Friday Night Lights", start his business and brand. If you need a pep talk to help you take that leap of faith, start that project you've been procrastinating on, or just want some encouragement to help you start something new then you'll find that in this episode.

It's a common thought. "I'm going to start a business, make my own money, and LIVE MY BEST LIFE". It's the perfect dream. What if you start off slow and all of the money you put into your business is coming from 3 different bank accounts and is being spent on gas that you used going door to door looking for businesses. What about the classes and tutorials that you bought and never used. Not to mention the equipment that you found out later you wont be using as often on shoots so you might as well not bought it. Your money is going everywhere, and worst of all you probably didn't keep up with the receipts or invoices. Let's be positive and say you did have a successful start and made a lot of money, but put it in your personal bank account, gave a friends some, and put the rest in your business bank. You just split your money three ways and now when its time for taxes you cant show where your money wend because you didn't pay yourself correctly.
There are many stories like this happening everyday and it can break your business. A good accountant can control this foretold madness and keep your finances and growth in check. Listen and learn from Brandon's mistakes and see what you need to look for in a good Accountant.
