Our Problem with Giving Feedback and How to Give Feedback that Promotes Learning and Growth

In this video, we explore a powerful moment of transformation during a two-day leadership retreat, where a CEO and his team confront the challenges and rewards of giving honest feedback. On the second day, as team members provided feedback to one another, tensions rose when one member faced critical feedback that had previously gone unspoken. With guidance, the team learned to “speak truth with kindness,” helping to create a culture where constructive feedback is both valued and normalized.

Join us as we unpack this breakthrough moment and explore three essential keys to effective feedback:

    1. View feedback as a learning opportunity for yourself.
    2. Ask genuine, open-ended questions.
    3. Separate facts from judgments.

Feedback done right fosters growth, trust, and resilience—keys to building a high-performing team. Whether you're leading a team or working to improve team dynamics, these principles will help you create an environment where everyone can learn and grow together.

Some of the most powerful words to say to an athlete

Sometimes the most powerful words you can say to an athlete are simply, 'You've lost the privilege to practice today.' 🚪✨ Legendary coaches like John Wooden showed us that holding unwavering standards doesn’t require yelling or threats—just calm, direct truth. Whether it’s ‘You’re distracting others,’ or ‘You’re not getting much out of it,’ these words shift the focus back to their choices and responsibilities. 💪 Choosing discipline over control takes real courage, but it’s how team cultures transform. #Leadership #TeamStandards #DisciplineNotControl #CultureReset

    Have You Said It Enough?

When your athletes start playfully mimicking your go-to phrases, it’s not a sign of disrespect—it’s a win! 🙌 They've heard your message loud and clear, and it’s sunk in so well they can joke about it. Whether it's 'Be quick, don’t hurry' or 'It's a get-to, not a got-to,' repetition works. 🗣️ So, if they’re not making fun of you yet… maybe you haven’t said it enough!

A Lesson from George Washington: The Difference Between Learning and Growing

In this video, we explore a key lesson from George Washington's leadership journey, inspired by historian David McCullough’s reflections on the first U.S. president. Washington’s ability to face challenges as they were—not as he wished them to be—set him apart. His presidency laid the foundation for a lasting republic, marked by innovative decisions like the peaceful transfer of power and the two-term limit.

But what made Washington’s leadership truly transformative? It was his ability to grow beyond his military background and evolve his mindset for the unprecedented challenges of governing. This video delves into the difference between learning and growing as a leader, drawing from Adult Development Theory. Growth requires more than knowledge—it demands a shift in perspective and the willingness to develop deeper self-awareness.

We also reflect on leadership practices that lead to true transformation, inspired by experts like Brad Stulberg, Amanda Blake, Shaka Smart, and Dr. Michael Gervais. From journaling and mindfulness to rethinking identity, these practices can help leaders grow beyond their current level of thinking.

If you’re a leader seeking to evolve your leadership mindset and practices, this video is for you.

How to Onboard New & Returning Players

Welcoming new or returning players to the team can be tricky, but it doesn’t have to be! 🤔 Whether it’s athletes joining mid-season, returning from another sport, or coming back from injury, it’s key to make sure they feel like part of the team right away. 🏅
Here’s a simple strategy to make that happen: ✨ Ask your existing players: 1️⃣ What was your first day on the team (or back) like? 2️⃣ How do you want new or returning players to feel on their first day? 3️⃣ What can YOU do to make that happen?
By involving players in the process, you’re not just solving the challenge—you’re coaching them to take ownership of creating a welcoming environment! 💪🤝

2 Ways to Fight Against Today's Transactional Sports Environment

Tony Bennett, one of the most transformational coaches in sports, recently retired, citing the unhealthy state of the game and college athletics. He isn’t the only one—Nick Saban, the legendary seven-time National Champion, also stepped away for similar reasons. Both coaches built their success on long-term player development, strong relationships, and team-first values, but the current system seems to reward transactional mindsets over transformational growth. In this video, we explore why these greats are bowing out and what the rest of us can do to fight back against the shifting landscape of college sports. From reframing sports as a privilege to fostering a team culture focused on service and others, these insights offer a way forward for coaches committed to transformational leadership. Want to help your players shift from self-focus to other-focus and build a strong team culture? Who's In Your Corner?

Being a great athlete can set you up to be a great coach, but sometimes, your own success can hold you back. 🧠 Experience can make you think you always know the right answer. It’s easy to fall into the trap of relying too much on what worked in the past and miss out on new ways to grow.

As I learned early in my career, real growth comes when you get input from others—people who aren’t in your situation. That’s why I believe in the power of mentors, consultants, and coaches. Each plays a unique role:

➡️ Mentors share their wisdom, offering advice from years of experience. ➡️ Consultants bring models and solutions for specific challenges. ➡️ Coaches? They hold space for you, ask tough questions, and guide you in uncovering your own solutions.

Coaches like Emma Hayes and Shaka Smart know the value of those challenging conversations. And it’s why I focus on executive coaching—it’s not about giving answers, but helping leaders see themselves more clearly.

If you’re serious about growing as a leader, it’s time to ask yourself: Who’s in your corner? Are they pushing you to evolve, or keeping you in your comfort zone?
