As two moderately intelligent advertising professionals, we have changed public opinion on behalf of Reebok, Samsung, Viacom and Coke. Now, we’re taking a granular look at individual stories of change through a highly personal podcast. Join us!

I remember crouching down an inch from my daughter’s face and just letting her have it (verbally)…and then she said, “I’m afraid right now and I don’t want you to hurt me.”
Talk about ripping your heart out. And, talk about relatable. That was the moment Rachel realized she wanted to find a new approach to parenting.
Rachel and I discussed her evolution as a parent, what’s worked for her, what hasn’t, and who she looks to for advice.

I can relate to Ben. I did much the same some years ago: New city, new baby, new job. That much change has a way of stirring things up and causing a chain reaction of changes in other, seemingly unrelated, areas.
Ben had been in the non-profit space for a decade but knew it was time for a change. We talked about how to define your values and how to discern when to pivot vs. when to take a leap.
“This one was very much about making a change to identity, and it just so happens that we had a baby and that we were moving…it was about figuring out who I am in the midst of that.
Unlike some of our other episodes in which our guest’s change is in the rear-view mirror, Ben is still in the thick of it. Our conversation captures Ben settling down, but still in transition.

While she laughingly shrugs off the title, I think you’ll see why she was assigned that label.
We discuss racism, home sizes, sub-cultures, and how changing affects those around us.
“From researching tiny houses and then designing my tiny house, I knew my home was ‘different’ from what was available at the time, and I used that opportunity to my advantage and began offering my plans for sale, as well as consulting services, tours, workshops and speaking at events. There have also been some unexpected developments in the journey such as an unforeseeable ‘responsibility’ within the tiny house community as being a voice for and representing people of color in a movement that is mostly whitewashed. “

Amongst other hardships, Christa’s apartment building burned down and a plane she was in was struck by lightning. But, instead of staying stuck in anger and fear, she has actively chosen joy and hope and has chosen to make the world a better place through her many professional endeavors.
If you want to find your pack, you have to howl.
Christa is a writer for the Washington Post, the producer of NYC’s Secret & Lies, the author of Emerson Page and Where The Light Enters, and a product manager, and she will soon be returning to school to study Biomimicry. In fact, while our conversation went far deeper than career, it was Christa’s varied career that instigated the introduction.
In Christa’s words, she is, “a proud member of the slash generation who is a business leader / product developer / journalist / storyteller / novelist / producer / yoga and meditation teacher / proliferator of goodness (not necessarily in that order) and hopefully, soon-to-be scientist.”

To kick off Season 2, we stepped away from our usual format of an individual sharing their story and instead analyzed change alongside an expert. Steve Almond is the author of 10 books, including the New York Times bestsellers Candyfreak and Against Football.
In this episode, we discuss his newest book, Bad Stories, which he describes as “a literary investigation of what the hell just happened to our country.”
Steve is a professor of writing and the co-host of the New York Times Dear Sugars podcast. His short stories have been anthologized widely, in the Best American Short Stories, The Pushcart Prize, Best American Erotica, and Best American Mysteries series. He also publishes crazy, DIY books. Ollie Aplin is the creator of Mind Journal, a (beautifully designed) journal for men.
When Ollie was a teenager, his bi-polar mother committed suicide. That led to Ollie experiencing panic attacks, culminating in a breakdown in his early 20s.
Over time, with therapy and journaling, Ollie began to put himself back together again. Eventually, he created the Mind Journal to help other men keep a journal, and “become a stronger version of the man you already are.”
