A Podcast about growing up In the 70s and 80s, at the dawn of video games, navigating family strife, punk rock, Star Wars obsessions, and trying to understand to the world while developing an inexplicable love for everything “Atari”. -- We are twin brothers who grew up "Atari" or as we call it, in The Vertical Blank. The Vertical Blank is space between the lines. It's the the second half of Generation X. It's the where work occurs you never see on screen. It's the nuances that makes nostalgia real. It's the transcendental location that holds our best memories, biggest joys, greatest fears, and our most terrible losses. In this podcast we discuss Atari computers and systems, new and old, review new games we collect, talk about all the systems, and the significance they had in our lives and the lives of others, and even talk about them in an historical context with the backdrop the times they were released, and how they are being used now. We do all this in an effort to finally understand the answer to this existential question: what does it mean to have grown up "Atari" in the generation of the Vertical blank.     Join us as we take a look at 10 good #actionplatformer games for the #atarist we also briefly discuss them for the #amiga and otjer 80s computers such as the #c64 and #pc I have chosen the #Atari ST as my platform because it was what I had from 1987 until 1992 and also because these games have most likely been explored in detail for other systems multiple times already, whereas the ST versions probably have not been explored as much as they deserve outside of the few good ST youtube channels that do a great job of covering games for the system.

    The Euro Platformer. Today the term is used with much derision, mostly by console game fans but even by some many 80’s computer games, and well now, now even by me, and we all probably should know better, or should we? Yes, these games had very high difficulty, cheap deaths, a lot of jumping to unknown places and mostly “bad game design” that would have the Retronaughts guys throwing up their arms in disgust. I’m picking to play these on the Atari ST because it's the machine I had and loved but also because it bridged the gap in many ways between the 8bit era and the full 16-bit era with its colorful graphics but decidedly 8-bit sound. The ST was a machine built for 1985 with very little concern about what would come next. Sometimes I jokingly call the games of this time the forgotten 12-bit era. I will note, and briefly discuss these games, if available, on other systems, because you really should check them out on the machine of your choice, but the ST versions are the ones we will be looking it today in

    Plus: Embarrassed by my poor play of Airlock, I went back and tried to figure out what I was doing wrong. What I found was a combination of user error, RTFM and a flaw of the 2600+ that all contributed to my poor play. But none of that made the game any better.
