In this podcast, Walt Zerbe, Sr. Director of Technology and Standards at CEDIA and host of the CEDIA podcast, talks with Darren Reaman, Director of Government Affairs at CEDIA, Michael Cogbill, Owner and Principle of Rev 2 Consulting, and Ken Erdmann, Director of Technical Education Programs at CEDIA about CEDIA's campaign to get a listing on the Standard Occupational Code (SOC) on the federal statistical standard for a Technology Integrator to make is an official occupation. This supports workforce development, advocacy, and education initiatives among other things. We also talk about limited energy language changes in the National Electrical Code (NEC) which is a major change (and a good one) from using the term low voltage. These efforts are due to Ken and Michael having a seat representing CEDIA on code panel 2 of the current NEC revision.
By the way, all of these efforts have international ramifications - this isn't just a USA thing.

CEDIA State Captains Program:
CEDIA State Captain Program
CEDIA is re-establishing the CEDIA State Captain Program, a key part of CEDIA’s Government Affairs Program.
CEDIA works daily to monitor, track, and lobby on licensing legislation and regulations to ensure that the appropriate scope of work for a license or an exemption covers the work done by integrators today and in the future.
CEDIA’s Government Affairs Program’s mission is to support members and ensure that their ability to own and operate their businesses is not impeded upon.
The mission of the CEDIA Government Affairs Program is to influence public policy to protect CEDIA members, the smart home technology industry, and consumers.
Job Description for State Captains
· State Captains will be the captains of their particular state.
· State Captains, when called upon, help analyze bills CEDIA has identified as potentially problematic in their state.
· State Captains are often asked to attend legislative hearings and give testimony if necessary supporting CEDIA’s position.
· Promote CEDIA member involvement and program engagement.
Time Commitment Level
Year-long commitment, though they may not need to do anything if no problematic bills or regulations are introduced in their state in that year. State Captains can continue to serve the following year.
If, as sometimes happens, there is not a bill or regulation in their state that concerns CEDIA during a given session, they will probably not hear from CEDIA, aside from periodic government affairs updates from the program.
